Excerpt from the plaque:
Official poster of the first exhibition of the watercolors La Divina Comedia presented at Museum Galliera in Paris in 1960.
Found this sign at a store called "Antiques of the future."
Made me think.
There´s a big time span between this sign and today, but it´s quite similar today, I think.
Sokol, an all-age athletic organization, was first founded in Prague in 1862. It was based upon the principle of “a strong mind in a sound body.” The movement soon spread across all the regions populated by Slavic cultures. The word “Sokol” means falcon, a symbol of freedom among Slavs at the time. There were local and regional Sokol events yearly, called Slets, with huge “All-Sokol” national and even international Slets at longer intervals.
Sokol developed and thrived during the heyday of postcards, the late 19th and early 20th century. Hundreds of postcards, many designed by famous artists of the era, were produced as advertising and souvenirs for Sokol events. Gymnastics and calisthenics are central to the Sokol physical culture system, and Slets incorporate demonstrations and competitions of those activities, which are featured prominently on many of the postcards.

Digitised image from the Town Hall Photographer's Collection - GB127.M850
The Town Hall Photographer’s Collection is a large photographic collection held in Manchester City Council’s Central Library archives, ranging in date from 1956 to 2007.
The collection consists of tens of thousands of images, covering the varied areas of work of Manchester Corporation and latterly, Manchester City Council.
The photographs were taken by staff photographers, who were tasked to document the work of Corporation/Council departments and, in doing so, captured many aspects of Manchester life and history, including significant changes to the Manchester landscape.
The collection includes many different formats from glass negatives, to slides, prints, CDs and even a couple of cine films.
What is especially exciting is that the majority of these images have never before been available in a digital format and therefore have only ever been seen by a handful of people.
A team of dedicated Staff and Volunteers are currently working on the systematic digitisation of the negatives held within the collection.
This album represents the result of their work to date.
War correspondent Ernie Pyle may have been right when he said there are no atheists in foxholes.
Although best known for his “Saturday Evening Post” covers, of which he produced 129, John Falter (1910-1982) also provided illustrations for other publications including “Esquire,” “Good Housekeeping,” “Cosmopolitan,” McCall’s,” “Life Magazine,” and “Look.” As television eliminated many national magazines in the 1950s and 1960s, he turned to portrait painting and book illustration. He illustrated over 40 books.
In 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and was rapidly promoted from chief boatswain's mate to lieutenant on special assignment as an artist. His final rank was Chief Petty Officer. His talents were applied to the American war effort to spur on recruiting drives. Falter designed over 300 recruiting posters.
Reflecting a lifelong interest in jazz, Falter did scenes of Harlem nightclub life in the 1930s, and later, portraits of famous jazz musicians. He was an accomplished jazz clarinet player, entirely self-taught. He took great pleasure in visiting jazz friends at clubs such as Eddie Condon’s in New York City, where he would sketch the musicians live, then sit in on clarinet. As an excellent portrait painter, he had Clark Gable, James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland and Admiral “Bull” Halsey among his sitters. [Source: Wikipedia]

Features a factory worker gesturing towards soldiers fighting in the background, symbolizing the connection between the home front’s industrial efforts and the front-line military activities. The poster is a classic example of wartime propaganda designed to boost morale and encourage productivity among American workers by reminding them of their crucial role in supporting the battlefield soldiers. It was created for the U.S. War Manpower Commission, a critical agency during World War II, charged with addressing the labor needs of the U.S. as it balanced the demands of war production and military service.
Artist Lyman Anderson (1907-1993), who was too old to serve in the military during the war, contributed to the war effort through his art. After the war, he continued to create illustrations for major companies such as General Electric, Goodyear, Mobil Oil, Pan-American Airlines, Pepsi, and Proctor & Gamble. His bold and effective style captured the spirit of the mid-twentieth century.
