I made a workbench for the almacen in Riocaliente, its based on a hybrid medieval/roman design with a few tweaks. The legs are made from cut down pick handles, with wedged tenons, the top laminated pine, and holes drilled for stops. Cheap, simple and so far useful for sawing, marking-out and planing.

This avoids the need for an inverter. I've had this one for 19 years and I've a spare. You can find out more about DC and off grid living in our blog lafermedesourrou.blogspot.com/
The Soil Food Web is explained, highlighting it's importance in soil and plant health--and it's destruction by tillage.
passive solar: (south-facing windows & skylights) glazing, thermal mass (dark tile floor, concrete walls & concrete tub)
heat: sunlight, thermal mass, woodstoves, thermal reflection from natural swimming pool
natural light: deftly placed south-facing windows, skylights w/ clerestory windows, & (courtyard) sunwells
insulation: ivy covered exterior North wall
A beautiful little building, inspired by the Earthships of Phoenix, a concept by the architect Mike Reynolds... I heard him speak at the University of Stirling, and subsequently at a Scottish Parliament committee... From those early meetings, this little baby Earthship was born - a demonstration model, shall we say, and one that I'd been meaning to visit for years!
The idea is that the building is completely off-grid, and self-sustaining. The roof catches water which is filtered for drinking. Waste from showers and taps is then used for toilets, and this waste is subsequently used to grow plants... The building is built into a south-ish-facing slope, with walls made of rammed-earth tires which act as an effective heat-sink. As an antithesis to high-insulation buildings with a high embodied-energy and thus carbon footprint, the Earthship minimises the footprint even further - the glazing is virtually the only material that need come in from off-site. The result is actually rather beautiful.
Find out more about Earthships at www.earthship.net/ and about this one in particular at www.sci-scotland.org.uk/index.shtml - I'd recommend visiting!

Naomi and I rented a small tiny home/cabin through Air BNB for a little weekend getaway to hit the restart button. We took her polaroid camera as well but I didn't scan any of those in.

I have no idea how to use the new camera, and started messing around with the settings. For some reason I thought this would add colour, but I really like how it is washed out.

the front of marilyn pedretti's strawbale home in holmen, wisconsin. she's got 8 solar panels for a total of 1Kwh of power, and is completely off-grid. she's got a metal roof, and the house is designed with a passive solar layout (designed by todd osman.)
the deck wraps around to the back of the house and is made from composite recycled wood and plastic decking.
marilyn started building this in may of 2006, and just moved in two weeks ago (september 2007). she's still got a few things to finish up, but it's an amazing house as it is.
you can read an article on marilyn pedretti's strawbale home from her local paper here.

This inverter is fed from 300w of solar panels via a charge controller and batteries.
It's used with a plug extension to charge 'phones, cameras, and other small bits of equipment I switch it off at night.
