The European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has a complex and fascinating life cycle, characterized by its long migrations. Born in the Sargasso Sea, near Bermuda, the eel begins its life as a larva, drifting for up to three years across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe. Once it reaches the continental waters, the larvae transform into juvenile eels called "glass eels," which are transparent and migrate into rivers, lakes, and estuaries. Over the next several years, they grow into adult eels, developing a dark pigmentation. These adults can live up to 20 years, often in freshwater environments, before undergoing a mysterious migration back to the Sargasso Sea to spawn and die. This life cycle, particularly the journey back to the Sargasso Sea, remains one of nature's great mysteries.
It's currently facing a significant decline in population, with numbers plummeting by over 90% in recent decades. Overfishing, habitat loss, pollution, and the construction of barriers like dams have severely impacted their migration routes, breeding success, and overall survival. The eel's complex life cycle, combined with environmental pressures, has made recovery difficult. Additionally, climate change and oceanic changes threaten the eel's spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea. This drastic decrease in numbers has led the species to be listed as critically endangered, sparking conservation efforts to protect the eel's remaining habitats and ensure its survival.

🇦🇮The wreck of the Ruby submarine is an exceptional dive in the Mediterranean sea, located at Cap Camarat, between Cavalaire and St Tropez. The wreck rests at 40 m on a sandy bottom. She is very well preserved and her straight position on her keel makes her majestic especially on the bow.
The Ruby is a minelayer submarine, launched in Toulon in 1931. Measuring 66 m long, 7 m wide and 8 m high, it was armed with a 75 gun, two 13 mm machine guns and it could wet up to 32 mines. This submarine was equipped with a 3900 HP Vickers-Armstrong engine allowing it a speed of 8 knots while diving and 12 on the surface. The Rubis could descend to 50 meters, and navigate in periscopic immersion up to 15 meters with a crew of 45 men.
After serving in Norway, he came as reinforcements in the Mediterranean sea and in Scotland during the Second World War. On June 8, 1945, he returned to Oran where he was decommissioned and used as an instruction ship until 1950, then transformed into a submarine base. The Rubis emerged intact from the war, which for this type of boat is quite an achievement. In 1945 the results of the submarine are eloquent: 28 missions, 683 mines dropped, 15 ships, 7 minesweepers, 1 freighter of 4360 tons sunk, a damaged U-BOOT.
On January 31, 1958 it was towed 2600 meters from Cap Camarat. Commander Riffaud places the 9 kg charge, and blows up the rear of the Rubis, which sinks to a depth of 40 m for its last trip.
🇫🇷 L’épave du sous-marin Rubis est une plongée exceptionnelle en Méditerranée, située au Cap Camarat, entre Cavalaire et St Tropez. L’épave repose à 40 m sur un fond sablonneux. Il est très bien conservé et sa position droite sur sa quille le rend majestueux surtout sur la proue.
Le Rubis est un sous-marin mouilleur de mines, lancé à Toulon en 1931. Mesurant 66 m de long, 7 m de large et 8 m de haut, il était armé d'un canon de 75, de deux mitrailleuses de 13 mm et il pouvait mouiller jusqu’à 32 mines. Ce sous-marin était doté d’un moteur Vickers-Armstrong de 3900 CV lui permettant une vitesse de 8 nœuds en plongée et 12 en surface. Le Rubis pouvait descendre jusqu’à 50 mètres, et naviguer en immersion périscopique jusqu’à 15 mètres avec un équipage de 45 hommes.

En 1945 les résultats du sous-marin sont éloquents : 28 missions, 683 mines larguées, 15 navires, 7 dragueurs, 1 cargo de 4360 tonneaux coulés, un U-BOOT endommagé.
Le 31 janvier 1958 il est remorqué à 2600 mètres du Cap Camarat. Le Commandant Riffaud place la charge de 9 kg, et fait exploser l’arrière du Rubis qui sombre sur un fond de 40 m pour son dernier voyage.

The silky shark (Carcharhinus falciformis) is a species of shark in the family Carcharhinidae which owes its name to the smooth texture of its skin. He is epipelagic, very abundant, and lives in tropical and subtropical oceans around the world, which exposes it to intensive fishing. Its status is "Vulnerable" on the IUCN list.
The Silky Shark typically reaches a length of 2.5m, with a maximum recorded length of 3.5m and a weight of 346kg. The females are larger than the males and are viviparous with an annual reproduction giving birth to a dozen young. The Silky Shark has a slender, streamlined body, with a long, rounded snout, gray back, and white belly. These pectoral fins are long and triangular, the dorsal one is short and behind the pectoral ones. The caudal fin is heterocercal, the dorsal lobe is more developed than the ventral. The silky shark is an opportunistic predator and feeds mainly on fish but also molluscs and crustaceans.
Le Requin soyeux (Carcharhinus falciformis) est une espèce de requins de la famille des Carcharhinidae qui doit son nom à la texture lisse de sa peau. Il est épipélagique, très abondants, et vit dans les océans tropicaux et subtropicaux du monde entier ce qui l’expose à la pêche intensive. Son statut est « Vulnerable » sur la liste de l’UICN. Le Requin soyeux atteint généralement une longueur de 2,5 m, avec une longueur maximale enregistrée de 3,5 m et un poids de 346 kg. Les femelles sont plus grandes que les mâles et sont vivipare avec une reproduction annuelle donnant naissance à une douzaine de petits. Le Requin soyeux a un corps mince et fuselé, avec un long museau arrondi, dos gris et ventre blanc. Ces nageoires pectorales sont longues et triangulaires, la dorsale est courte et en arrière des pectorales. La nageoire caudale est hétérocerque, le lobe dorsal est plus développé que le ventral. Le Requin soyeux est un prédateur opportuniste et se nourrit principalement de poissons mais aussi de mollusques et de crustacés.

This Cargo ship was built in 1912 in Scotland, the Sagona called "the Greek" measured 54 m long and 8.5 m wide and weighed 808 tons.
The Sagona was shipwrecked in similar circumstances to the Prosper Schiaffino, more frequently called Donator, a few weeks after it on December 3, 1945. Like the Donator, it struck a floating mine while carrying a cargo of wine southeast of Porquerolles a few hundred miles meters apart and sinking under the Panamanian flag. The toll of the sinking is two dead and one sailor missing. The name of the Greek comes from the fact that the crew was of Greek nationality next to the identification realized by divers from the National Navy who discovered documents written in Greek.
The majestically beautiful wreck lies on a sandy bottom at a depth of 48m. It was cut into two pieces following the explosion, about fifty meters separating the front from the rest of the boat. The main part rests straight on its keel, like the Donator. We can observe the winch, the propeller, the holds filled with debris from barrels, the chimney, the mast lying on the port side.
The flora and fauna are exuberant there. The corridors are invaded by red and two-tone gorgonians and the entire wreck is coated with gigantic schools of fish, composed of marine goldfish, white sea bream and Mediterranean chromis. It is also home to large numbers of groupers, moray eels and common dentex. The wreck has become a sanctuary for all Mediterranean flora and fauna.

le Sagona fait naufrage dans des circonstances similaires au Prosper Schiaffino, plus fréquemment appelé Donator, quelques semaines après lui le 3 décembre 1945. Comme le Donator il percute une mine flottante en transportant une cargaison de vin au Sud-Est de Porquerolles à quelques centaines de mètres l’un de l’autre et sombre sous pavillon panaméen. Le bilan du naufrage est de deux morts et un marin porté disparu. Le nom du Grec provient du fait que l’équipage était de nationalité grecque suite à l’identification réalisée par des plongeurs de la Marine Nationale qui découvrirent des documents écrits en grec.
L’épave d’une beauté majestueuse repose sur un fond de sable à 48m de profondeur. Elle est coupée en deux morceaux suite à l'explosion, une cinquantaine de mètres sépare l'avant du reste du bateau. La partie principale repose bien droite sur sa quille, comme celle du Donator. On peut observer le treuil, l'hélice, les cales remplies de débris de tonneaux, la cheminée, le mât qui gît sur bâbord.
La flore et la faune y sont exubérantes. Les coursives sont envahies par les gorgones rouges et bicolores et toute l'épave est enrobée de bancs de poissons gigantesques composés d’Anthias, de Sars et de Castagnoles. Elle abrite également mérous, murènes et Dentis en grande quantité. L’ épave est devenue un sanctuaire pour toute la faune et flore méditerranéen.
