The Mauna Kea Observatories (MKO) are a number of independent astronomical research facilities and large telescope observatories that are located at the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, United States. The facilities are located in a 525-acre (212 ha) special land use zone known as the "Astronomy Precinct", which is located within the 11,228-acre (4,544 ha) Mauna Kea Science Reserve. The Astronomy Precinct was established in 1967 and is located on land protected by the Historical Preservation Act for its significance to Hawaiian culture.

The location is near ideal because of its: dark skies from lack of light pollution, good astronomical seeing, low humidity, high altitude of 4,205 meters (13,796 ft), position above most of the water vapor in the atmosphere, clean air, good weather and low latitude location.

If I'm not mistaken, the Zeiss Telescope is located inside this dome, or one of the others. I cannot recall which part of L.A. is in the background, but I was grateful to get a shot of this dome and a view of the City of Angels. My time there was limited, but I still have plenty of pictures to share-both with my iPhone and my Canon.

Taken at Swansea Beach - the large builidng in the foreground is the old observatory which has not been converted into a cafe (yet to open!) and holiday accommodation. It always seemed a very strange place to site an observatory as it is on the edge of the city with lots of light pollution! HWW!

I enjoyed my visit to The Griffith Observatory. Lovely place, and it offers such a spectacular view of Los Angeles as well as the famous Hollywood Sign.

McDonald Observatory is an astronomical observatory located near unincorporated community of Fort Davis. The facility is located on Mount Locke in the Davis Mountains of West Texas.

The Sphinx Observatory is an astronomical observatory located above the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. It is named after the Sphinx, a rocky summit on which it is located. At 3,571 m (11,716 ft) above mean sea level, it is one of the highest observatories in the world. Accessible to the public, it is also the second highest observation deck in Switzerland. The mountain top has been tunneled to fit an elevator which ascends to the observatory from the Jungfraujoch railway station, the highest such train station in Europe.

The open viewing deck accessible to the public is adjacent to the observatory. It offers views of the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger peaks, all within a few kilometres.

The Marina Towers Observatory (also known as the Swansea Observatory and Tower of the Ecliptic) is located in the Maritime Quarter of Swansea, on the coast of southern Wales. It was previously home to Wales's largest optical astronomical telescope.[1] The building was designed by Robin Campbell in 1989 and consists of two towers, it was built with part funding from a European Heritage Grant. From 1993 to Feb 2010 it was loaned to the Swansea Astronomical Society but it is now back in the hands of Swansea City Council.

The top of the tower has a stained glass feature designed by David Pearl. Observational facilities previously included a 20-inch Shafer-Maksutov telescope - the second largest of its kind in the world. But this has since been removed after Swansea Astronomical Society vacated the site.

Built in 1866, Bidston Observatory in Wirral was once at the centre of research into tide times and astronomy.

It is being auctioned with space for residential development and a guide price of £550,000.

The Bidston Observatory Preservation Trust wants to see the building remain as a heritage centre.

This shot was taken at a community observatory on the campus of a local college.

I took it earlier this year with my phone for a Cellphone Photography Class assignment. I used a tripod and a remote shutter. I like the surreal look that the phone gave it.

I believe this was taken with my Kodak Retina IIIc a couple of years ago. I used expired Fuji Sensia 400 and pulled the color out in post because it looked kinda funky and I wasn't having much luck fixing it. Lab processed. Scanned with a D-SLR on a home-made scan rig using a Schneider Componon 80mm enlarging lens, macro bellows and copy stand. Post production with Darktable.

The Quito Astronomical Observatory is one of the oldest observatories in South America and was founded in 1873.

Ecuador is located in a strategic geographical position where solar-physics studies can be performed year-round, providing data for the scientific community working to understand Sun-Earth interactions.

The Quito Astronomical Observatory was completely renovated and fully restored in 2009.

At the end of the Großglockner High Alpine Road you are in the Hohe Tauern National Park and up near the glacier there is this glass observatory. From the outside the structure is designed to look like a piece of rock crystal. There is an exhibition inside and some telescopes for viewing the surrounding area. We saw a couple of marmots just below the building- I'm sure they hang out there because tourists throw them crisps and snacks!

Anyway, I sat on the ground by in the entrance hall to get this shot looking up and out through the roof.

King Chulalongkorn built the Ho Withun Thasana observatory in 1881 and visitors are free to climb the stairs and enjoy the views from the top. Please take notice of the sign that requests visitors to take off their shoes before climbing the wooden staircase.
