One of Bamberg's gondoliers chats with passengers as they glide along on the Regnitz River, nearing the lower City Hall bridge in central Bamberg. By coincidence, this shot shows a passenger smiling as she looks up at the gondolier. I've desaturated the background and water (making it a partially monochrome image), and cropped to 1:1 (square). Here's some background info:

Fishing has a long history in Bamberg. And fishing families live in an area along the Regnitz River that has long been known as Little Venice (Kleinvenedig). So why not have a gondolier or two as well? Jürgen Riegel got inspired with this idea, had a gondola built in Venice, and became Bamberg's first gondolier in 1994. The idea took hold, and tourists have been taking gondola rides here ever since. Sources (in German): www.infranken.de/freizeit-tourismus/ausflug/ein-hauch-von... and www.gondel.info/

Streuobstwiese (pl. Streuobstwiesen) is a German word that means a meadow with scattered fruit trees or fruit trees that are planted in a field. In contrast to an orchard, a Streuobstwiese consists of high-trunked fruit trees, mostly of different ages and different species and varieties. Modern, intensive fruit cultivation, on the other hand, is characterized by low-stemmed fruit varieties in monoculture.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Streuobstwiesen were a kind of a rural community orchard that were intended for the productive cultivation of stone fruit. In recent years, ecologists have successfully lobbied for state subsidies to valuable habitats, biodiversity and natural landscapes, which are also used to preserve old meadow orchards. Both conventional and meadow orchards provide a suitable habitat for many animal species that live in a cultured landscape.

A notable example is the hoopoe that nests in tree hollows of old fruit trees and, in the absence of alternative nesting sites, is threatened in many parts of Europe because of the destruction of old orchards.

This Streubobstwiese is located near Bieberbach in the Fränkische Schweiz.

Franconian Switzerland (German: Fränkische Schweiz) is located between the River Pegnitz in the east and the south, the River Regnitz in the west and the River Main in the north. Like several other mountainous landscapes in the German-speaking lands, e.g. Holstein Switzerland, Märkische Schweiz, or Pommersche Schweiz, Franconian Switzerland was given its name by Romantic artists and poets in the 19th century who compared the landscape to Switzerland.

Franconian Switzerland is famous for its high density of traditional breweries, scenic valleys and natural landscapes.

The town of Gräfenberg is located at the southern end of Upper Franconia in the valley of the Kalkach River, which borders the historic old town. The valley lies directly on the slope edge of the Franconian Alb. Therefore, Gräfenberg has considerable differences in altitude (400 m to 550 m). The highlands around Gräfenberg form the area of the White Jurassic. Cherries are often grown there.

At Saturday evening we've been to the "Förmitzspeicher", a reservoir near Hof. It was the predicted relatively clear evening with a beautiful sunset, so I shot some images and panos. This one is the view to the other direction with the sun in my back, I loved this view with the beautiful pastel colour and the man walking the way with the trees.

This pano was stitched from 6 single shots.

This is my second shot from the wonderful evening light and the lone person walking home. Again this image was taken at Förmitzspeicher near Hof.

Removed a building and some leaves. The Franconian Switzerland is prettier than I remembered, maybe its cause the first time I went there is was winter, or since its been a couple of years without seeing mountains every day, but I found it very charming and a place I would like to go back to.

We didn't had a plan for the day, but since it was a bank holiday we just drove to the area. I made a quick Google reasearch to see if there is any highlight besides the landscape and this place showed up and caught my eye.

One of those few times when I knew how I wanted to edit the photo while making it.

This image shows the five maple trees at Raitschin just after sunset. It's a shot from last year's september, when we visited the little hill with the trees to enjoy the sunset.

The Ehrenbürg is a double-peaked butte on the edge of the Franconian Jura in Bavaria, Germany. It is in the district of Forchheim in Upper Franconia, The north peak is the 513.9 m Walberla, The hill is also the subject of numerous legends about witches and hidden treasure, and the tale of a fabulous town which once stood at the foot of the hill, an accursed castle which stood where the chapel is now, and an evil woman who was turned to stone and became a rocky outcropping, the "steinerne Jungfrau" (stone virgin). The mountain is located in the middle of the cherry growing area of the Franconian Switzerland. With more than 200,000 trees spread over 25 square kilometers, this is the largest contiguous sweet cherry growing area in Germany.
