Describe something interesting or unusual about your work here:
I’m usually the second person (after the fine art packer) to lay eyes on all the objects after they arrive at the museum to be considered for addition to our permanent collection, which is pretty cool. I write a description for each and every piece, which can sometimes be a challenge, especially with some contemporary art and with ethnographic pieces! I also write condition reports, which involves spending lots of up-close, “touchy-feely” time with the art, which I really love. I like to register furniture because I get to open every door and pull out every drawer. (I was once able to discover the trick to opening one of the secret compartments in one of our desks just by poking around!)
What was your first job:
My very first job was the summer before I started college at the University of Nebraska. I was a concessionaire at a movie theater—one of those 1950’s cheesy one-screen theaters, not a big mall multiplex. That was a great job—I ate enormous amounts of popcorn! After I got my B.A., I moved here to the Twin Cities, was totally unsuccessful finding a job in the arts right away, and worked at Knox Lumber—first at the return counter, and then as an accounting clerk in the office. I’m so not a math girl, so that was a terrible job for me!
What’s hanging on your walls?
A poster from the 2001 “Degas and America” exhibition and a bulletin board, which has some notes about work projects, but mostly cartoons, pictures of my cat, little pictures of Hello Kitty, and a little plastic bag from Sanrio Puroland, the Hello Kitty amusement park just outside of Tokyo, where I was lucky enough to get to visit. (I’m a Hello Kitty collector, and I have a shelf of Kitty paraphernalia in my office.)
If you weren’t an Associate Registrar, what would you be?
I dreamed of becoming an animator and working for Disney when I was in junior high and high school. I would love to be a background artist, but I don’t have the artistic talent! I was torn between music and art in high school and early in college, and I sometimes think I would have liked to be a high school band teacher. I’ve had the opportunity to teach music to high school kids, and it was hugely rewarding for me.
What is your favorite work of art at the MIA?
The John Singer Sargent painting "Birthday Party." I never feel like I’ve seen everything there is to see in that painting. Sargent packed so much meaning into that canvas. I think it’s rich and gorgeous.
What do you do for fun?
Making music is my favorite hobby—I play clarinet and tenor saxophone. I’m a member of the Grand Symphonic Winds, and I played with the Minnesota State Band in the late summer and through the fall. I’m also a sub with the Da Capo Saxophone Quartet. And I sub around and fill in as a ringer here and there in different amateur wind bands and ensembles around the Cities.
What are you currently watching?
My husband recently picked up the original “Star Trek” TV show on DVD, so we’ve been making our way through those. We’re realizing that all we remember from watching it in syndication as kids are the crazy aliens. Some of the stories early on were really good, and not campy like the series seemed to get near the end.
Name one guilty pleasure.
I love TV court shows, especially “The People’s Court”! If I didn’t have to work every day, I’d watch Judge Judy, Judge Hatchett, Judge Jeanine Pirro, Judge Mathis, “Divorce Court”, all day long!
What would be your super hero power?
I totally wish I could bend spoons and make stuff move with only mind power.

Icelandair succeeded in the almost impossible task of creating a second special livery that is on par with the awesome Hekla Aurora... really couldn't say which one I prefer now!
Ice Air 549 is seen speeding up 24 on its way to Keflavik in perfect December weather. Thanks FI for sending your specials regularly to Orly!!
