It's the Sicilian Honey Garlic again! They are so photogenic. They are like the supermodels of flowers. I've bought another 50 bulbs, given about 30 away, and will plant the rest in the garden this weekend. Apologies in advance for many more photos of exactly the same thing next summer :)
Happy Weekend everyone!

Allium 'Gladiator'

It's a closeup of the buds of an allium, photographed recently at Chicago Botanic Garden. Alliums are flowering plants that are part of the amaryllis family, and there are hundreds of species. Once these buds open, this will take on the appearance of a globe-shaped many-blossomed flower.

The growing season will almost definitely end with the freezing nights we'll have this weekend. So there's a farewell party going on in the gardens right now. Pollinators are racing to grab all the flower pollen they can to stock their Winter homes and the garden plants are drinking in as much sunlight as possible to fuel their photosynthesis.
And there are many plants still flowering - right up until the very last moment. This wonderful little pink fireworks burst is Allium thunbergii, the latest and last-blooming of the ornamental onion (allium) family. :)

Allium (Ornamental Onion)
"Allium hollandicum", popularly known as "the Purple Sensation" is one of the most popular species of ornamental bulbous plants.
There are several species of Allium or onion that are grown exclusively for their flowers instead of their bulbous structures. Ornamental onions are not planted in the vegetable garden, but in beds or borders with other perennial flowers. Flower heads on ornamental onions are usually globe shaped.
Onions are among the world's oldest cultivated plants. They were probably known in India, China, and the Middle East before recorded history. The wide use of alliums as ornamental plants is a more recent phenomenon, first gaining favor about the middle of the 19th century.

Being locked out, cooped up in your house, there's a longing to be out in the open, enjoying the free air, roaming around the park, appreciating the nature, but my friends, it's better to stay home unless it’s necessary.
Stay safe, keep healthy!

I waited so long for the Honey Garlic to flower this year, and when it did, by the time I got around to photographing it the flowers were already starting their upwards climb to become the little Cinderella Castle seed-heads you see towards the top of this image. When these first flower, all of the flowers hang downwards like bells, then through the season they gradually dry and point upwards, you can then cut them, dry them off properly and have them indoors as decoration through the winter.
I’d love someone to do a time-lapse video of them going through this process because it is fascinating to watch it happen gradually 🌸
