BEERZE // Het hoofddoel voor 27 april 2023 was vanzelfsprekend de weer eens rijdende 1251 van Railexperts. Nadat we 's ochtends reeds het ledigmat vanuit Rotterdam hadden vastgelegd in de Eempolder, kwamen we via een koffiepauze uit in het gehucht Hell bij Putten voor een tweede plaatje van de combinatie. Daarna startte de achtervolging richting de omgeving Mariënberg, naar Beerze. Als de 1251 dan weer eens terugkeerde op 'vertrouwde bodem' (zie met de vroegere Coevorden-shuttles) kon een plaatje op het enkelspoor niet ontbreken.
Een fotostop in Zwolle zorgde voor wat lichte speling, maar niet genoeg om te zeggen 'zondagse pootjes omhoog en rustig aan'. Kijkende naar de meldingen, weer naar de prognoses op Google Maps, en weer de meldingen, etc etc. Opa's stuurkunsten zorgde gelukkig nog voor wat extra speling, precies genoeg zou achteraf blijken! Aangekomen in Beerze was het gauw al met spullen in de hand de overweg over voor het laatste sprintje het veld door, waar reeds een grote menigte met hetzelfde doel stond te wachten.
Nog geen 3 minuten na het opzetten en het aanpassen van de laatste instellingen kwam de trein in zicht.. een hele opluchting toen de gelukte plaatjes tevoorschijn kwamen op de telefoon via de wifi-verbinding :)
Drie pogingen en drie geslaagde plaatjes, de dag kon in ieder geval niet meer stuk!

Op maandag 22 maart kreeg ik een berichtje met de vraag of ik iets te doen had op dinsdag. Mijn dinsdag bestond uit versnipperde lessen van kwart voor negen 's ochtends tot kwart over vijf 's middags. Tussendoor had ik af en toe zelfstudie. Dit betekende dat er dus mogelijk wat ruimte was voor het fotograferen van treinen. Het doel van het berichtje op de maandag was mij attenderen op de trekkracht van de aluminiumoxidetrein naar Duitsland. (Dank daarvoor!) De loc die ervoor zat, was de climate hero van DB Cargo, één van de leuke bestickerde locs van de Duitse vervoerder.
Als de trein van Kijfhoek zou vertrokken volgens de geplande vertrektijd van 12:42, zou ik de trein niet kunnen halen omdat ik nét op dat moment een les zou hebben. Aan het begin van de middag bleek de trein echter te zijn vertraagd. Om 13:58 werd vertrokken waardoor ik het nu wél kon redden. Ik leende mijn opa's auto en reed naar Herwijnen om trein 46605 op te wachten.
Niet lang nadat ik gearriveerd was, kwam de trein tevoorschijn. Iets later dan verwacht rijdt DBC 193 363 “I am a climate hero” met de 23 wagens tellende aluminiumoxidetrein door het heiige land rond Herwijnen.
Memorial benches are a popular alternative to cemeteries; this one has a superb placement and views from under two towering maple trees. I think Oma & Opa would approve. :-)

So sieht meine Verwandschaft nach der Kirchweih aus. Die andere Familie musste angeblich stationär versorgt werden.

Saturday Self Challenge: Beginletter B, in vierkant formaat
Brood (volkoren brood), broodmes, broodplank, en op de achtergrond een oude meelzak. Deze zakken werden in mijn opa’s bakkerij gebruikt.
Let erop dat het brood ook vrijwel vierkant is. Dit ligt aan het feit dat het brood in een gedekseld bus (bakblik) wordt gebakken.

Bread (wholewheat bread), bread knife, breadboard. In the background an old bag of flour. This bag was used in my grandfather’s bakery.
Note the bread is also nearly in a square. This is because it is baked in a ‘bus’ (kind of baking tin) with a lid.

I've met an enabler for my reading habits; turns out I work with a woman who has a friend that gets pre-release books for some reason or another. How did I not know this?
I happened to be walking by her desk while she was reading on her lunch break the other day and stopped to ask what she was reading which is how I discovered her magical secret.
We chatted books for a few minutes before I left her to finish her reading and amazingly the next time I was in the office my enabler had left three books on my desk and has kept them coming ever since.
Amazing!

Amethyst Crystal, I had to use this for this weeks theme, purple is my favourite colour and I just love gemstones. I have always had an interest in gemstones, I find it quite amazing what our gorgeous planet can create beneath its surface. Nobody in my family has an interest in gemstones and I have always wondered where my interest came from, my love of photography I got from my father and I literally only found out last week my Opa use to like collecting gemstones as well, my dad was telling me when he was a little boy growing up in Germany he would go into my Opa's study and look at the stones and Opa would get very angry with him for touching them. Amazing how things can pass down the family lineage without even knowing.

Yesterday Scott and I ventured down to Kingston to celebrate my Opa's 84th birthday with a family brunch! We had a great time and it was so wonderful to see Opa surrounded by family and smiling.
Luckily for Scott and I we just missed the weather that hit shortly after we hit the road, it was, for the most part, a good drive with hardly any ice / rain.
Fyero was unimpressed by our return but happy that her dinner was served on time.

Een plaatje uit, wat in mijn archief, de oude doos is; 2019. Toch alweer zo'n vierenhalf jaar geleden. Ik was op de zondag van Terug naar Toen in alle vroegte met mijn opa's auto naar de Veluwe gereden voor de nodige plaatjes van het stoomevenement waar ik nog nooit geweest was.
Dat was toen, inmiddels ben ik jaarlijks op de Veluwe te vinden om de machtige zwart met rode machines te bewonderen. Niet alles draait om zwart met rood; er is één serieus afwijkende stoomloc in het bezit van de VSM: de 52 3879. De in 1944 vervaardigde Altbau-loc heeft een bijzondere uitstraling.
Op 8 september 2019 werd "de grijze" ingezet om een reizigerstrein van Beekbergen naar, in ieder geval, Loenen te trekken. Na de grijze tender zien we ook nog VSM 50 307 meerijden. De jochies op crossmotor respectievelijk quad kijken niet op of om naar de 1600pk sterke loc die hoog boven hen uit torent.
This is my Opa's pocket watch, which I believe was given to him in 1918 and I still have the original leather case, which I decided to use in this photo to add to the age and history of my Opa's watch.

Opa died long before I was born, but his son went on to become an optical physicist, designing all manner of lenses throughout his life. 16 years ago he passed on and passing to me his Pentax K1000 (which still works, except for the light meter) and his father's cameras (Hawkeye 2A, Bessa I, and this Alpa Reflex)

The Alpa always mystified me: I'd started photography with a Canon EOS Elan-IIe (well-automated auto-focus SLR) shortly after our son's birth (I still have it, still love it, and it still works) and the Alpa made no sense to me.

Yesterday, for some reason, perhaps because I'd just returned from taking my son off to his second year of college, I pulled the Alpa and its accessories out out of their box, cleaned them up a bit, and figured out how its controls work. It's an incredible piece of machinery, from a world long before mine, that leaves me wondering about the things that tie us together, even with people we never knew

Naarmate de oorlog verder achter ons ligt dreigen ook de herinneringen aan die vijf bezettingsjaren in de vergetelheid te geraken. Opa's en oma's die de jaren '40 - '45 bewust hebben meegemaakt zijn inmiddels al vaak overleden.
Toch is het goed om al die verhalen over de oorlog door te vertellen, om de kinderen van nu en straks duidelijk te maken dat discriminatie op grond van afkomst en geloof, de inperking van vrijheden: onze grondrecht, in een democratische samenleving niet voor mogen komen en een volk geen verplichte ideologieën mogen worden opgelegd. Om die reden moeten de verhalen van toen telkens worden doorgegeven aan de komende generaties om ons en hen te doen beseffen dat vrijheid het hoogste goed is

As time passes, the memories of those five years of occupation also tend to be forgotten. Grandfathers and grandmothers who consciously experienced the 40s - 45s have already died in many cases. Nevertheless, it is good to tell all those stories about the war, to make it clear to the children of today and later that discrimination on grounds of origin and religion, the restriction of freedoms: our fundamental right, must not occur in a democratic society and that people should not be forced to adopt compulsory ideologies. That is why the stories of the time must be passed on to the generations to come to make us and them realize that freedom is the highest good
Pass on hostility!

I made a few throw pillows for the living room this afternoon; two of which were made from my Opa's shirts & sweaters.
Scott isn't too sure if he's a fan of the style, but that's okay because I really like having a reminder of Opa so close by.
The third pillow I made is in the background and is one of my old sweaters that doesn't quite fit right since it met with the dryer but was too cute to throw away.

Wie vaker overdag op het station komt zal ze ongetwijfeld wel eens hebben gezien. Vaders en moeders, opa's en oma's die samen mij hun (klein)kinderen treintjes gaan kijken bij het station. Want op de één of andere manier zijn treinen toch iets fascinerends voor kleine kinderen (en opa's).
Vandaag wilde ik de ATO testtrein fotograferen en trof ik deze jonge moeder op het perron. Na eerst trekkers en graafmachines te hebben gekeken bij grondverzetbedrijf van der Mheen was moeder met haar zoon doorgereden naar het station.
Hier kijken ze samen naar de intercity die vanuit Zwolle richting Amersfoort passeert.
