I am not really a fan of beaches of any kind (well, sometimes :-)) but this one is very special. I'd never seen a more beautiful beach before, really not! This is the so called Turtle Beach in the beautiful Sultanate of Oman. The beach is not easy to access, you have to drive a quite long distance and then walk, but it was worth it. We didn't see any turtles, though. They come in the night and you must book a special tour because this beach is then closed for the visitors

We were on our last day in Oman when we visited the wonderful Muscat Festival of Culture ,where many activities/things were on display. This lady, in her full "regalia", was grinding corn in the traditional manner.

Bahla Fort (Qal'at Bahla) is one of four historic fortresses situated at the foot of the Djebel Akhdar highlands in Oman. It was built in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the oasis of Bahla was prosperous under the control of the Banu Nabhan tribe. The fort's ruined adobe walls and towers rise some 165 feet above its sandstone foundations. Nearby to the southwest is the Friday Mosque with a 14th-century sculpted mihrab. The fort was not restored or conserved before 1987, and had fallen into a parlous state, with parts of the walls collapsing each year in the rainy season. The fort became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. It was included in the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1988. Restoration works began in the 1990s, and nearly $9m were spent by the Omani government from 1993 to 1999. It remained covered with scaffolding and closed to tourists for many years. It was removed from the list of endangered sites in 2004.

Al Hamra, a 400-year-old town with beautiful doors.

Jebel Shams is part of Oman’s Hajar Mountain range. I started this day with the understanding I had hired a driver and 4x4. When it was time to embark, I discovered I had only rented the truck ( no driver) and I was to drive myself, a daunting realisation to say the least.

Nevertheless, I decided to give it a go. After a two-hour drive through very steep and muddy hills (4WD engaged), I arrived to the lookout. It was completely clouded over. Not the “Mountain of Sun” I hoped for. It was already 3:00 PM and I told myself I must leave by 4:30 to avoid driving back in the dark. Just as I was about to call it quits, the clouds began to dissipate and revealed this stunning, natural wonder. It was so incredibly awesome, it brought a tear or two to my eye.
