This music reflects what still goes on in my mind. I look old but I am still young at heart:

Hey you!

Don't walk on the turnips!

My lord,

When will they ever learn it?

Look there,

Nations of travelling children.

No where to go,

To escape the chill wind.

Don't cry,

Don't raise your eye,

It's only Teenage Wasteland.

Music is still the best way to cheer the soul in these trying times, regardless of your favourite genres. Crank up your favourite tune, gather your air-guitar and let the music wash over you. Oh, and if you're after a leather jacket head on over to Man Cave to try on Derdieb's - the detailing on the back is certainly eye-catching.

I don't know why, but this reminded me (in some roundabout way in my head) of the album cover to Christopher O'Riley's Hold Me To This (if I untangled it all).

Daily Dog Challenge - 4089. 3/17 "Green"

If any one member of The Who can be said to be the group's founding member it is singer Roger Daltrey, who was born in the West London suburb of Shepherds's Bush on March 1st, 1944. Roger first assembled the group that would become The Who in 1959 while at Acton County School, recruiting John Entwistle and subsequently agreeing to John's proposal that Pete Townshend should join. In those days, Roger, whose daytime job was in a sheet metal factory, even made the band's guitars, and it was his high energy and ambition that drove the group during their formative years. The view from the top of the falls is beautiful, even if the fall colors had peaked several days before. According to this article, Amicalola Falls State Park's [very apt] name comes from a Cherokee language word meaning "tumbling waters." The 729-foot waterfall is the highest in the state and is considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Georgia.

Excerpt from Wikipedia:

St Mary of the Angels is a Catholic church on the corner of Boulcott Street and O'Reily Avenue in Wellington, New Zealand. It is the parish church for Wellington Central and one of the major churches of the city. The Marist Fathers have provided clergy for St Mary of the Angels since 1874 in succession to its founding and long-serving parish priest, the Capuchin Franciscan, Father Jeremiah O'Reily. The church was used by Archbishop O'Shea as his pro-cathedral (1936–1954). It was the site of the funeral of Suzanne Aubert in 1926 and is well known for its church music tradition.

The first Catholic Church built on the site of St Mary of the Angels was a small chapel ("the chapel of the Nativity") built by Father O'Riley in 1843. It was blessed and dedicated by Bishop Pompallier on a visit to Wellington in the next year. This building was gradually enlarged and was completely replaced by a large wooden church in 1874. Fr O'Riley named this building "St Mary of the Angels" after the Portincula chapel which was precious to St Francis of Assisi. This church was extended until it was badly damaged by fire in 1918 and then demolished. The present building was opened and blessed on 26 March 1922 by Archbishop Redwood and a solemn pontifical Mass was celebrated by Bishop Liston of Auckland. A sermon was preached in the evening by Bishop Whyte of Dunedin.

St Mary of the Angel's interior (2012); before 2017 structural strengthening; the windows of the clerestory, the marble high altar, reredos and side altars are prominent.

The building is classified as a Category I ("places of 'special or outstanding historical or cultural heritage significance or value'") historic place (being opened in 1922 with uninterrupted church use of the Boulcott Street site from 1843) by Heritage New Zealand.

Plans for the church were prepared by architect Frederick de Jersey Clere in 1919. Architecturally, the design is traditional Gothic of French influence. The front facade was said to have been modelled on that of the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels. The structure is reinforced concrete and brick with a timber roof supported by concrete arches with steel tie rods. Its construction was innovative in that it was 'the first occasion ferro-concrete was used for a church of Gothic design'.

The church is noted for its collection of stained glass windows, especially in a continuous series completely around the clerestory interrupted by the rose window above the narthex, a window of the crucifixion above the high altar and two spacious banks of 15 windows, one finishing the north transept (fifteen decades of the Rosary) and one finishing the south transept (the life of St Joseph). These windows flood the liturgical spaces of the church with light.

The church also houses an extensive collection of statuary, including a reduced, marble, copy of Michelangelo's Moses and life-sized representations of the Pietà and the Holy Family. In the transepts, the Our lady and St Joseph side altars are of brown-mottled marble and include prominent statues of Our Lady of the Rosary (in Dominican habit with blue veil) and Saint Joseph, with votive candle racks in front of each of them. Other large statues in various parts of the church include the Sacred Heart, St Vincent de Paul, St Marcellin Champagnat and St Peter Chanel.

The Gothic marble high altar and tabernacle, in front of a blue backing, includes a sculpted, reredos with statues. The altar was detached from the reredos and moved forward in the 1960s in the implementation of the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council (the celebration of the Mass facing the congregation). This altar is fronted by a carved, Last Supper set under an incised arch along its width. The ornate columns in the sanctuary are topped by marble statues of angels.

That same energy, coupled with his unwavering resolve, has sustained the group during periods of uncertainty ever since.

This again? Yup. I'm betting you were thinking you'd never see another one of these, and yet here we are with Part 36 of 50 in a wildly sporadic series. I hope to get three or four of these done before the end of the year, but I make no promises.

I'm going to start the Nevada story off a little earlier than usual.

Go back 200 million years when everything was still crammed together as part of the Pangea supercontinent, and Nevada didn't exist. I don't mean just the state. I mean the land the state would occupy. The chunk of Pangea that would become North America stopped in the middle of Wyoming, and everything west of that was just ocean and a bunch of island arcs being pulled toward a coastal subduction zone. But as the years passed by the millions and Pangea broke into Americas and an Africa and a Europe and so on, these islands came crashing into the North American coast. They built up into more and more West over time, and eventually cowboys became a real possibility.

Nothing lasts forever, though, and the planet didn't seem satisfied with that outcome. So about 10 million years ago the direction of geophysical forces reversed and the West Coast started trying to pull away from the rest of the continent. (Shocker.) Nevada wound up getting stretched, and big blocks of Nevada land started breaking up and tilting every which way to form big mountains and deep valleys -- basin and range. The mountains blocked the weather and turned everything dry, and what little water made it into the valleys evaporated, and all the life dried up. It's still that way today.

That kind of geological action has the side effect of producing a lot of underground heat, though, and underground heat creates hot springs. Deeply buried water heats far beyond the boiling point and dissolves minerals from the rock through which it flows. These minerals precipitate out of the water when it cools, filling buried voids with gold and silver. A hostile desert hides riches, but it has to wait for somebody dumb enough to go digging in the Nevada sun. Nevada has always been about an irrational promise of wealth buried beneath sun-baked dirt.

The First Marks

The earliest people in Nevada came during one of those short breaks the region takes every once in a while in the course of geologic time when it decides to be wet. Nevada spends ice ages as a land of many lakes, and the Asiatic people who crossed the Bering Land Bridge and spread out into North America found these Nevada lakes pleasant enough to stop and settle about 9,000 years ago. They became the victims of Nevada's first bait-and-switch. The evidence suggest these were wetlands people who lived off fishing and foraging in the lakeside marshes, but the climate shifted as the millennia passed, and the lakes mostly went away. Over time, the people who stayed in this drying place became nomads who wandered the desert looking for water that shifted with the changing seasons. Their cultures evolved into the native groups who were in Nevada when the first Europeans showed up, the Paiutes, the Shoshone, the Washoe, the Hualapai. They were small in number and fairly insular by the time the white folks arrived, and it was easy for the Europeans to ignore them. There wasn't really the usual push for the eradication of natives in Nevada. The Europeans just acted like the natives weren't there.

It's not entirely clear who the first European was to wander through the Nevada desert, but it was probably somebody Spanish. Spain had grabbed up almost all of South America in colonialism's early days back around 1500, and their claims reached north up through Central America and Mexico deep into the western deserts of North America to some vague border they defined as "up there somewhere." But Mexico -- then called the Viceroyalty of New Spain -- was kind of a backwater colony, and things got more backwater the farther north you went. Spanish Catholic priests scattered missions all over the Spanish possessions, but north of Mexico these missions mostly stuck to coastal California on one side and the Rio Grande up into northern New Mexico on the other. The Camino Real, the network of Spanish roads linking all the missions, ran up through California in the west and New Mexico in the east, but it mostly skipped northern Arizona and Nevada.

So while it's possible somebody came up this way accidentally over the centuries, nobody is known to have come up into Nevada until the Spanish King Carlos III kicked all the Jesuit missionaries out of the entire Spanish domain in 1767. (Side note: I don't want to get side tracked on this, but the expulsion of the Jesuits was kind of a big deal in the history of Spanish America, and it was instigated in part by a revolt in the Old Country by Castilians protesting a law limiting the size of capes and sombreros. For real. That's not a joke. Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with Nevada, so I won't get into it.)

With the Jesuits gone, the Franciscan Order took over running the old Jesuit missions in northern Mexico, California, and southern Arizona, and the first thing the Franciscans noticed was that there was this vast stretch of Mojave desert territory the Jesuits and everybody else had spent a couple of centuries ignoring. So they started sending wandering missionaries out to explore it. One of these guys, Francisco Hermenegildo Tomás Garcés, took to the desert with a vengeance, and he is very likely to have wandered up through Nevada a few times on his expeditions in the 1770s. But he wound up killed in a revolt by Quechan people down in Yuma in 1779, so he never got around to establishing anything permanent in Nevada. Spanish people kept wandering through over the next few decades, but they all thought it was too hot and dry to do anything with.

And so, in the 1820s, the American mountain men started showing up. (And here, by "American," I mean white guys from the still new United States of America back east.) These were hunters and trappers and roughnecks who'd gotten tired of all that civilization back east and were looking for ways to make money in the wilderness,. Like most of the people who came after them over the centuries, they first saw Nevada on their way to California. The first batch of these guys was led by a man named Jedediah Smith, who took a group through the Las Vegas Valley headed for California in 1827. He wandered up north along the Sierra Nevada Mountains, then came back east across the Great Basin Desert in central Nevada. Decades later, the routes Smith pioneered would become part of the California and Emigrant Trails, and thousands of settlers would pass through Nevada on their way to something better. A bunch of these people would die from busted wagon wheels in the desert heat.

But still, nobody stopped in Nevada. A few mountain men spent a lot of time hanging around with the Washoe people up in the north and wandered through the valleys of the Humboldt and Carson Rivers. But nobody settled there just yet. Nobody built a town.

Ante Up

It took a bureaucratic shake-up prompted by things that happened someplace else to finally get the settlement thing started in Nevada.

In 1821 after a 13-year-long war, Mexico gained its independence from Spain, and Nevada became a far-flung backwater of a free North American nation instead of an ancient European kingdom. But then that whole thing with Texas independence happened in the 1830s, and the Americans with their Manifest Destiny dreams started eyeing California in the 1840s, and U.S. President James Polk manufactured his war with Mexico as a thinly-veiled land grab. The land grab worked, and in 1848, Mexico signed the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo that handed most of what would become the American Southwest over to the United States. And just like that, Nevada went from being Spanish to Mexican to American. Once Nevada was officially sanctioned as American territory, the mountain men and wandering types and California forty-niner prospectors decided it might be worth building an actual permanent trading post. They opened Eagle Station along the Carson River in 1851. A decade later, somebody changed the name to Carson City.

But Nevada still wasn't Nevada just yet. For the moment, it was Mormon, thanks to the bureaucratic types back East who carved the new Mexican Cession into organized territories. They sliced a big piece of the cession's top that didn't include California into a single territory called Utah, and they told the Mormons to run it all out of Salt Lake City.

As you might guess, that Mormon story is kind of huge, but I'm going to save that for a future state for obvious reasons. Any story involving religion is far better suited to Utah than to Nevada, anyway. The thing to know here is that the people settling around Carson City weren't Mormon, and they didn't want any part of that whole Mormon ... thing. So they started pushing to split the western half of the territory off into its own place, which they'd call Nevada.

It took them a decade to get that done, because that's how long it took them to find the thing that would really define Nevada's character for all the rest of history. This is where all that geology bit I wrote at the start of this pays off. Remember those precious metals precipitated by hot springs into the cracks in the mountains? All that gold and silver? In 1859, somebody stumbled onto the heart of it on the eastern side of a mountain northeast of Carson City. They called this bonanza the Comstock Lode, and the Nevada silver rush was on.

Call, Raise, or Fold

There are conflicting stories about who, exactly, discovered the Comstock Lode and how it happened, which you'd expect because the events after any discovery like this naturally involve a lot of lying and thievery. One version says that a couple of Pennsylvania brothers named Ethan and Hosea Grosh had been headed to California but had gotten to the Sierra Nevadas too late in the year to make the crossing, so they stopped over for the winter in Carson City. While there, they went poking in the hills and came across a bunch of silver. Hosea then hurt his foot somehow and died, and Ethan decided he'd be better off taking a sample of the silver and a bunch of maps over the mountains to San Francisco to register the claim, only he didn't make it to San Francisco. He froze to death in the mountains instead, but he'd left a trunk full of silver for safe-keeping with a business associate in Carson City named Henry Comstock. Which ... yeah. Seems kind of fishy.

Another tale credits the Lode's discovery to a couple of old forty-niner types named Peter O'Riley and Patrick McLaughlin. They'd been poking around in California for a while looking for gold, and in 1859 they came over to Carson City. Forty-niners had been spilling over from California into the Carson River Valley for a while, though, and all the best claims were already taken. So these guys headed up an empty canyon northeast of town and hit silver. Their strike soon made news, and a bunch of folks -- including Henry Comstock -- soon had claims staked on the Lode. Miners poured in from all over, and the boom town of Virginia City sprang up over night.

None of the competing claimants had the resources to really develop the site, though, so in the end they all sold out to wealthier men like George Hearst (I'll talk a lot about him when I get to South Dakota), and the rich guys made all the money while the forty-niner gamblers all came out broke as dirt. I mean, McLaughlin got $3,000 from George Hurst, which was big money in those days, but Hurst made millions while McLaughlin lost everything within a year and spent the rest of his life working odd jobs around the mines. Which is how it usually goes, especially in Nevada.

All In

The mines of the Comstock Lode alone would eventually produce more than $300 million in gold and $500 million in silver, and they would start a mining bonanza that would sweep across the rest of Nevada for the next hundred years. (And really, though the gold and silver played out, the mining never stopped.) The impact of it was enough to finally convince the Washington bureaucrats to break Nevada off from Utah as its own thing in 1861.

This left a new territorial legislature with time to focus on the next step, the matter of statehood. Considering how long it took for the Nevadans to get their own territory, the run from territory to statehood happened blink-and-you-miss-it fast. Maybe too fast. Perhaps even illegally fast. The Nevada Territory was barely three years old in 1864 when the territorial legislature decided to apply for statehood. Which, sure, Nevada was a boom state that popped up from nothing almost instantly, so you'd expect statehood to come on quickly. But still. According to the rules for this sort of thing, a territory needed at least 60,000 residents before Congress would consider it for statehood, and only 10,000 people lived in Nevada when the territory petitioned to join the Union in 1864.

Why the rush? Well, there's this creation myth nursed by Nevadans over the decades that Abraham Lincoln needed Nevada's electoral votes to insure his re-election in 1864, so everybody just kind of pushed things along. The territorial legislature wrote up a state constitution and sent certified copies of it to Washington by both overland mail and by ship from San Francisco. But neither copy had reached Washington as October drew to a close, so on October 26, 1864, the territorial governor had the constitution's entire 16,543 words translated into Morse Code and sent to Abraham Lincoln via telegraph. The entire transmission took seven hours and had to be relayed twice, and it cost $4,313.27. That translates to $70,887.46 in 2020 dollars, and is the most expensive transmission by telegraph ever made.

But it worked. Sure, there were rules, but Congress figured there was a Civil War on, so what did any of it mean anyway? It wasn't like the President of the United States hadn't just unilaterally decided that West Virginia was a thing, so what difference did it make that Nevada was 50,000 people short? Congress voted to admit Nevada to the Union on October 31, 1864, and the Nevadans had their say in picking Abraham Lincoln to lead the country another four years. Or five months, as it turned out. And it wasn't like it made that much difference, anyway. Nevada only got two electoral votes in that election, and Lincoln won the thing by 191.

All or Nothing

Usually, I end these stories with statehood, but there's one last significant point about Nevada I think is worth mentioning.

The original boundaries of the Nevada Territory -- the boundaries that would define the state of Nevada -- only included about 3/4ths of the space Nevada would eventually occupy. The territory's eastern boundary was originally set at the 116th meridian, about a hundred miles west of where the border with Utah runs now. A gold discovery in 1862 inspired the territorial legislature to ask the U.S. Congress to move the boundary one meridian east. Another gold discovery in 1866 prompted the new state legislature to ask Congress to move it again to where it is now, even though that sliced a huge chunk of land off what should have been Utah. But those guys were Mormons anyway, so nobody cared.

Nevada's original southern border, meanwhile, was meant to be even with the southern border of Utah, but the Nevadans wanted access to the Colorado River, so they also asked Congress in 1866 to give them that big, pointy piece of land between the river and California that gives Nevada its current wedge shape. This shifted a huge chunk of what had been the Arizona Territory over to Nevada, and the people in Arizona screamed about that noisily. But the Arizonans had supported the Confederates in the Civil War, and Congress wasn't in the mood to listen to them, so Nevada won that point.

And what did that get Nevada? Much of that piece of former Arizona would become Nevada's Clark County. In 1909, somebody formed a little cow town in Clark County called Las Vegas. After Nevada legalized casino gambling in 1931, casino developers and mafia guys looked at Las Vegas with its easy access to Colorado River water from the all-new Lake Mead forming behind Hoover Dam and saw the site of a future oasis, and the history of all America changed forever. Today, 71% of Nevada's population lives in Las Vegas. Which should have been part of Arizona. Which never legalized casino gambling.

And that's how Nevada finally tuned into the mythic desert paradise people know it as today, hiding everything a heart desires buried just beneath the sun-burnt sand.

First in a loose series of Hull musicians, Ron Hales performing with his band Snake Eye at O'Rileys in Hull on 21st July 2019.

Hull band Red Dirt started in 1970 and released a self-titled album on the Fontana label. After playing numerous dates in London, the band changed their name to Snake Eye. They then toured with many of the top acts at the time including Free, Marc Bolan, The Kinks, Status Quo and J Geils Band.

In 1972 the band went into the studio to record their debut album "The Journey" which was described at the time as a cross between King Crimson and Wishbone Ash. Manfred Mann suggested they were “one of the best bands he had seen” and the world was seemingly their oyster but musical tastes were changing fast and by the end of 1973, with no major label signing, the band folded. Ron went on to play with General Wolf, Nisa, Soulflame and numerous other bands in a near 50-year career.

Ron reformed Snake Eye in 2015 and finally released "The Journey" the following year to favourable reviews.

RECENT NOTE

THIS PLAY LIST HAS BEEN DELETED AND REPLACED WITH A BETTER ONE DUE TO THE FACT THAT I LOST THIS IPOD, I AM JUST TOO LAZY TO WRITE ALL MY FUCKING SONGS AGAIN.

A girl and some tunes: the girl at the piano

"Karma police" Christopher O'Riley

www.deezer.com/track/karma-police-T609103

a new chapter (the fifth one!) in this series that mix girl portraiture and music.

This time the whole set is based upon Radiohead' tracks played the classical pianist Christopher O'Riley ( and a bit of references from Pia Petersen's book "Iouri", movies and paintings).

We did the shooting in the lounge bar/exhibition hall of a theatre of my town ( "L'Union"). The lounge bar was entirely designed by an artist; the atmosphere and the light are really special in this place!

At the end of the photoset, i'll post a short movie shot here ( i'm currently working on it).

Follow the girl at the piano in this set!

Model: Clotilde

stay tuned there's more pics to come ( as usual!)

Sally ,take my hand

Travel south crossland

Put out the fire

Don't look past my shoulder

The exodus is here

The happy ones are near

Let's get together

Before we get much older

Teenage wasteland

It's only teenage wasteland

Teenage wasteland

Oh, oh

Teenage wasteland

They're all wasted!

--The Who 'Baba O'Riley'

This is how I feel after the powers that be here on Flickr shoved the New Flickr down our throats or up our ass depending on your view. LOL!

Now let me be honest and say that there are a few things I like about the new design, like... okay I hate more things than I like. I could get past some of it if not for that HORRIBLE timeline on the landing page And that they took away any customization.

So today I joined ipernity.com as a fall back option because I feel that this 'New Flickr' is here to stay no matter how many thousands of voices are crying out as one with disgust. The CEO of Yahoo basically told us professionals that there is no more room for us here on Flickr. She is taking this site towards the way of the iPhone uploads for teens and non photographers. They are NO longer paying attention to us real photographers who use real cameras. A friend of mine told me why they left Canon, "They don't seem to be paying attention to people wanting to take pictures", well Flickr isn't either it seems. So if they can totally change brands then I guess I can change social sites if forced.

Now I am not leaving Flickr tomorrow...I will give it some time to make a full decision for one reason and one reason only...YOU! I have made a lot of GREAT friends here on Flickr, and I have met a lot of you. I love to see ALL of your work and feel that I wold miss those friendships. I know we could keep up with emails and phone calls, but I REALLY love the sense of community that is here on Flickr. So I am sticking it out hoping someone fires Marissa and restores some balance here.

Thanks for reading and I would LOVE to hear your thoughts.

Roger Daltrey and his band performing 'Baba O'Riley' at the SEC Armadillo, Glasgow, UK (28.3.25). Photoscape edit.

Otro tema de The who

The who- Baba O´Riley

www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY5rztWa1TM

This drawing is mainly focused on Radiohead and Thom Yorke and I decided to do that because the music of Radiohead really helped to make Christpher O'Riley as known and loved as he is today.

Peppered thru out the rest of the art are references to other song writers, or bands that Christopher O'Riley will be performing the music of.

Most of the nods to these artists are in text, but a few of them are more visual and I was glad to work that sort of thing in... especially in the short amount of time I had to work.

Long story short, this concert was a long time in the making and almost did not happen. I left myself on constant call just in case it did end up coming together... when it did, I got the call and went into art fiend mode, working super fast to make what is pretty much the only promotional piece for the show.

And to think, it is so, so, so close to actually getting to make something for Radiohead... and for me, that is pretty awesome!!

XO

Out here in the fields

I fight for my meals

I get my back into my living

I don't need to fight

To prove I'm right

I don't need to be forgiven...

That same energy, coupled with his unwavering resolve, has sustained the group during periods of uncertainty ever since. - A joy to see this amazing show!
