There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile,
He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;
He bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

"Rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,
"She shall have music wherever she goes."
from a traditional English nursery rhyme
Ladybird, ladybird,
Fly away home,
Your house is on fire
And your children all gone;
All except one
And that's little Ann,
And she has crept under
The warming pan.
One of many versions of the "Ladybird, ladybird,"
nursery rhyme from Mother Goose
Tick Tock Tick Tock,
I don't like you naughty clock,
When it's time for me to play,
How your hands just race away,
But when for me there's work to do,
Nothing goes as slow as you,
So tick tock tick tock,
I don't like you naughty clock.
HMM!

I had a little nut tree
Nothing would it bear
But a silver nutmeg
And a golden pear
The King of Spain's daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake
Of my little nut tree

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake, baker's man.
Bake me a cake as fast as you can;
Pat it and shape it and mark it with "B",
And bake it in the oven for baby and me.
Versions of this children's nursery rhyme can be dated back to 1698.
The rhyme is often accompanied by a hand clapping game.

Playtime at the bottom of the garden, and well..the teddies just had to come too!
Mid way through the tea party we were joined by a gatecrasher, I'll post that photo later!
I liked the contrast of color on the dock and the grass seed heads ..it would have been complete with a harvest mouse, but the cat is busy with population control.

"Mama, Mama! May we have an outside tea party today?" Silvi and Constance asked? "It's nice out on the deck!"
"Oh, I think that is a great idea! It's a little cool, but I expect that with fur, neither of you are cold! Let's get the dishes and I will be out with the teapot in just a second!"
"Thank you, Mama!"
"You are both welcome! Now, please be careful with the nursery rhyme china. It is very special to me. It was made in England and came all the way around the world from Australia! Isn't that amazing?!"
"We will be extra careful, Mama!" said Silvi.
"Yes we will, Mama! It is so lucky you have it! It makes for a very special tea party!" said Constance.
"Yes it does, my darlings! Yes, it does!"
Happy Teddy Bear Tuesday!

The North wind doth blow and we shall have snow,
And what will poor robin do then, poor thing?
He'll sit in a barn and keep himself warm
and hide his head under his wing, poor thing.
British nursery rhyme, believed to have originated as far back as the 16th century, and is referred to as either 'the North Wind doth blow' or 'The Robin'.
“The first fall of snow is not only an event, it is a magical event. You go to bed in one kind of a world and wake up in another quite different, and if this is not enchantment then where is it to be found?”
JB Priestley
Snow has arrived early in some places across the UK...must admit I've really enjoyed it!

*Inspired by an old traditional English rhyme for children, “Mairzy Doats” is a 1943 composition by Milton Drake, Al Hoffman, and Jerry Livingston.
The unintelligible lyrics of “Mairzy Doats” have a very pleasant melodic line and can be decrypted as “Mares Eat Oats”.
The song was first heard on the radio in New York at WOR station, sung by Al Trace and was then taken over in popular culture by various artists. Along with the notable Merry Macs band, The Pied Pipers where the ones that made the song popular (1944).

Callie IS one of our jumpers, however when I showed her the candlesticks for her to perform her trick, she gave me that "You must be crazy!" look! She is SUCH a prissy girl!

Jack be quick
Jack jump over the
candlestick

He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;
He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse,
And they all liv'd together in a little crooked house.
*Knock. Knock. Knock.*
SCOUT: "Paddy! Paddy who is at the front door?"
PADDY: "I\'m not sure, Scout."
SCOUT: "Daddy says that we are not to open the door to strangers." *Puts paw to mouth in concern.*
PADDY: "Hullo! Who is at the door please?"
VOICE FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR: "Hullo Paddy! It\'s me, dear Paddington, Bartie Bristle!"
PADDY: "Oh Bartie!"
SCOUT: "It could be a trick, Paddy!" *Tugs on Paddy\'s sleeve.* "Like the Big Bad Wolf in Little Red Riding Hood!" *Nods and looks concerned.*
PADDY: "Nonsense Scout! There are no Big Bad Wolves here! Only Monsieur Charles and we know he is a good wolf and a vegetarian!" *Opens front door.* "Bartie! How do you do? Please, do come inside."
BARTIE: "Oh thank you Paddy! How do you do? Hullo little Scout! Do you remember me from when you and little Peter visited me at my very special workshop?"
SCOUT: *Shyly.* "I do, Bartie! You fixed mijn beste vriend Peter’s porch swing made of clothes pegs when it broke."
BARTIE: "I did! How good you remember! Is it still working?"
SCOUT: "Oh yes, Bartie! It is just fine! My friend Aurora, mijn beste vriend Peter and Paddy’s best vriend Oleg were sitting on it just a few weeks ago."
BARTIE: "Excellent! Excellent! I am glad it is still working! When I fix something, I don’t want it to break again."
SCOUT: "I’m sorry Bartie, but I was scared you might have been a Big Bad Wolf in disguise as you." *Giggles in an embarrassed way*
BARTIE: *Chuckles good naturedly.* "Well as you can see, Scout, it really is me! " *Smiles.*
SCOUT: "I’m so glad it is you, Bartie!"
PADDY: "Daddy received your note that you were coming visiting soon, so he has the kettle on. Come and join us on the sofa in the sunroom and we will have some tea."
BARTIE: "Oh thank you, Paddy."
*PADDY, SCOUT and BARTIE scramble up onto the sofa whilst DADDY puts out tea things and fills the teapot with tea.*
DADDY: "Welcome dear Bartie! I knew you were coming, but we wasn’t expecting you quite so soon. I thought you were going hiking first."
BARTIE: "Oh I was, Mr. Daddy."
DADDY: "Oh there is no need for the Mister, Bartie. Just Daddy will be fine. Everybear calls me Daddy."
BARTIE: "Oh thank you, Daddy. Well, I was going to go hiking, but it has been so horribly hot around Europe with record high temperatures that I decided it was easier to use the magical portal at Mummy Marian’s house and come straight here. I did stop to see Mummy Marian and Peter and Oleg, but they were on holidays at the time, but some other nice bears who live with Mummy Marian who didn’t go on holiday showed me the magical portal, and… well here I am."
PADDY: "Oh yes, we heard about the hot temperatures in Europe on the telly! It must have been so hot in your plush coat!"
BARTIE: "Oh it was, Paddy! Horribly hot!"
PADDY: "Well, it is winter time here in Australia, and whilst it doesn’t snow like it does in winter at the special Teddy Bear Repair Shop with the Teddy Bear Ladies, it is cooler here."
BARTIE: "Oh, that is excellent Paddy!"
SCOUT: "And now that you are here, you can relax and enjoy your holidays! Hoorah!" *Jumps up and down for joy.*
BARTIE: "Well, I must confess, little Scout, that I am looking forward to relaxing for a little bit, and not doing any repairs."
PADDY: "May I offer you some tea, Bartie?" *Holds teapot aloft.*
BARTIE: "Oh thank you, Paddy!"
This beautiful nursery rhyme tea set was made in England by the Shell China Company in the 1930s. It features cups, saucers and plates as well as a teapot, milk jug and sugar bowl. Each piece is gilt edged and decorated and feature different nursery rhymes including: "Ding Dong Dell Pussy’s in the Well", "The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe", "Old King Cole", "Pat a Cake Pat a Cake Baker’s Man", "Little Tommy Tittlemouse", "See Saw Margery Daw" and &This Little Pig Went to Market" amongst others. The set I acquired from England, and it is a sister set to a 1920s Shell China Company nursery rhyme tea set and a 1920s faerie tale tea set. There are also doll (bear) sized tea spoons which are sterling silver salt and mustard spoons.
Bartie Bristle shares his time living part time in a very special teddy bear shop with all his friends, and part time with Mummy Marian Marian Kloon (on and off) in the Netherlands. His stories can be read in the book "Bartie Bristle and Other Stories" by The Teddy Bear Ladies Julie Tatchell & Amanda Middleditch. Whilst gaining a huge following for skilfully bringing people’s treasured childhood bears and soft toys back to life, alongside their specialist repair work Julie and Amanda also designed and crafted their very own trademark bear, Bartie Bristle. Bartie Bristle is hand-made by Merrythought in England from short-pile sandy-gold mohair plush and soft toffee-coloured velvet, and features embroidered stitch detailing, along with a hand-sewn nose and smile that captures the character’s unique charm and cheerful expression. You can see more of Bartie’s adventures with Mummy Marian here: www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03/galleries/721577229361...
My Paddington Bear came to live with me in London when I was two years old (many, many years ago). He was hand made by my Great Aunt and he has a chocolate coloured felt hat, the brim of which had to be pinned up by a safety pin to stop it getting in his eyes. The collar of his mackintosh is made of the same felt. He wears wellington boots made from the same red leather used to make the toggles on his mackintosh.
He has travelled with me across the world and he and I have had many adventures together over the years. He is a very precious member of my small family.
Scout was a gift to Paddy from my friend. He is a Fair Trade Bear hand knitted in Africa. His name comes from the shop my friend found him in: Scout House. He tells me that life was very different where he came from, and Paddy is helping introduce him to many new experiences. Scout catches on quickly, and has proven to be a cheeky, but very lovable member of our closely knit family.

This little set, though not all a direct match, is perfect for teddy bear tea parties, and a joy to see! Most of it is marked Made in England.
"Mum? Mum? I mean . . . Mama?"
"Is that you, Bene? What do you need, dear?" Bene has only recently come to live with us. He came all the way from England on his own.
"I would love to have tea and biscuits outside, please. Is that allowed?"
"Oh yes darling! It is a great day to be outside! I will fix tea, but I'm afraid I don't have any biscuits. Would a cookie do?"
"Ummm . . . I think that maybe a cookie is a biscuit, or right the other way round . . . " Bene looked down.
I had to laugh. He is still so charmingly British, but of course he is!
"OH! Well yes! You may have tea and cookies out back. You may sit in the Fall leaves if you want, and watch the river- it is just past the fence, but bears are not allowed past the fence unless with an adult. The river can be quite dangerous. Could you promise me that?"
"I would love to sit outside and see the river! And I won't go across the fence. I promise. It is very different here than where I came from in England!"
"I have never been to England, but I can imagine! Let me get tea going and I will bring the cookies out to you! Go ahead and enjoy this lovely day, Bene!"
"Thank you, Mu . . . Mama! I am glad to be here!"
"And I am SO glad you are here, too, Bene! I will be right back!"
Happy Teddy Bear Tuesday, All!

Benedict/Bene is a Merrythought bear from England and has come to stay with us! He is a very gentle and sweet little bear.
The lovely tea set pieces are from a dear friend of mine- www.flickr.com/photos/40262251@N03 - who knows how much my bears and I enjoy special tea sets! These pieces show off nursery rhyme and storybook characters, featuring "Three Blind Mice," "Old Mother Goose on a Very Fat Gander," "Little Miss Muffet," and Little Red Riding Hood." They were made in England, likely in the 1930s. The lovely set, which has many other pieces, was a grand surprize gift! Thank you SO much, Jesse- I think that Bene recognized a piece of home in the china!
This amazing shoe house sits on the shore of Bear Lake, Idaho, which is iced over in this photo. It is a peaceful place where deer graze in winter.
I'm not sure if I know the history of the shoe house or not. I think it was built around 1990 as a private home by Conrad Nebeker. His obituary states that he built it, but also says he built a microwave pothole fixer and tried to move Hong Kong to the Baja peninsula.

Song by The Wiggles
The Wiggles are a famous children's entertainment group from Australia that formed in the year 1991 when founder, Anthony Field, "had the idea to make a children's album". He met fellow founding members Murray Cook and Greg Page at Macquarie University, where all three were studying early childhood education.
