for the first time since Marnie died, I went to the woods in Sutton Park, my local big park, alone. I missed her company, but I have to start going out again, so steeled myself. I'm glad I went, and I hope you like the autumn colours as much as I did, who knows how long they will last? Autumn is over so soon!

I thought this rural B&W photo might be a fitting post considering our surging gasoline prices. I came across these two old farm tanks in a farmer’s field near Panora, Iowa, and photographed this scene with a Holga lens on a digital Canon camera,
I will still be mostly off for awhile. My wife’s surgery went fine, but she is still in the hospital recovering and will likely be transferred to a rehabilitation center within the next few days.

A monotone photo of the Mahaska County Courthouse in Oskaloosa, Iowa. It was built in 1886 and features the Romanesque Revival style architecture. The courthouse is a 3½-story red brick and stone structure. It is built on a rusticated stone foundation. The central tower has a square clock tower with spires at the top. It was altered in 1934 and it now has an Art Deco effect, giving the building a rather odd appearance. It was originally taller with a pyramid-shaped roof.

Positioned on top of the White Cliffs overlooking the Town od Dover and the English Channel, reflecting some great sunset light. Dover Castle is a medieval castle in Dover, Kent, England and is Grade I listed. It was founded in the 11th century and has been described as the "Key to England" due to its defensive significance throughout history
This photograph captures the essence of autumn in a quiet residential neighborhood in Ottumwa, Iowa. The view looks down a gentle, leaf-strewn hill, where a narrow, paved street curves out of sight. A canopy of color arches over the street, creating a peaceful and nostalgic atmosphere that is characteristic of a Midwestern fall.

Yesterday the sun was shining wonderfully, so I decided to go for another walk in my local big park and take some photos. Too good to miss the opportunity. A bit nervous I'd feel heartache, not having my Marnie with me - and of course, I did.
However, I'm so glad to have gone there, as I met two delightful gentlemen and their equally delightful dogs. They extended the hand of friendship to me, were so empathetic and even shared their dogs with me 😊 !

I will be away again for a week or two due to an ongoing family medical issue.
Meanwhile, here’s a gritty, grainy, black and white photo to contemplate. This normal telephoto shot is processed in an attempt to partially achieve the 'Are-Bure-Boke' aesthetic style of Daido Moriya. I skipped the excessive, heavy blur, but I did push the exposure and contrast to blow-out some of the whites and crush the blacks a little. I also added a homemade film emulsion overlay (lightly) to add some grit and increased the grain to replicate a noisy 6400 ISO to help convey some emotional and raw subjective expression. I suspect this young man is a student from Iowa State University.

This wide, black and white image shows an old abandoned barn and broken windmill in Hardin County, Iowa. The photograph was taken with a Holga HL-C lens, giving it a soft, blurry look. The soft focus and monochrome palette enhance the sense of timelessness, while the dilapidated state of the barn and windmill speak to the impermanence of human endeavors.

Winterberry, also called Winterberry Holly, is a familiar sight in this area right now. This close-up shot was taken at Big Creek State Park, located near Polk City, Iowa. A touch of frost has caused minor damage to these leaves and many other bushes have entirely lost their foliage, resulting in hundreds of bright red berry clusters embellishing each bush that will last well into the winter season.
Happy Thanksgiving to all my flickr friends in the USA.

This black and white photograph captures a young boy executing a scooter trick in mid-air at the Lauridsen Skatepark located in Des Moines, Iowa. The picture stirs emotions of youthfulness, vitality, and possibly a hint of boldness and daring. The boy seems to balance his sport with a sense of caution, as his helmet signifies a careful approach to an activity that carries some risk.

A rural B&W photo taken just off US Highway 63 in a small parking area next to a field by the Curtis King Historical Marker (near Eddyville Road and Chillicothe, Iowa). The smokestack in the distance is the Ottumwa’s electric generating plant.
I borrowed the title in part from Iowa’s Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area (SSNHA), a name that is intended to reflect both the farms and industries that constitute agribusiness. However, the area where this was photographed is not part of Iowa’s SSNHA region… it just sounded like a good title.

Five birds who are obliging enough to announce their presence in the garden.
The Woodpeckers, certainly very vocal.
The Nuthatches, call endlessly.
The Bullfinch pair who call to each other.
The Treecreeper
And perhaps my current favourite the Goldcrest
That's not to say it makes them easy to photograph but at least you know they're around.
My wife and I took a drive through Ottumwa, Iowa yesterday. The charming historic neighborhoods with cobblestone streets on the bluffs just north of the old downtown area were truly spectacular.

A photo taken last November after leaving Big Creek State Park in Northwest Polk County, Iowa. I’m not even sure where I took the photo, but I think we were closer to Sheldahl than Polk City. After I came over the hill, I saw this scene in my rearview mirror. So, before proceeding home, I stopped and took this photo.

A colorful autumn photo of Central Park in Otumwa, Iowa. In the background is St Mary of the Visitation Catholic Church. I want to try and get down here one night before Christmas, I’ve heard they do a fantastic job lighting this park up at night for the holidays.

A gatepost framed against the fading light of the day near Bondurant in Polk County, Iowa The rest of the fence has been taken down, leaving this lone post, gate, and some debris as markers to the field entrance. On impulse, I stopped here on my way home to take a photo of this lonely scene framed by the colorful sky beyond the fallow field.
