Canyonlands NP - The Needles - State Historical Monument
Formerly a state park, Newspaper Rock is now designated a State Historical Monument, and is situated along the relatively well-traveled access road into the Needles district of Canyonlands National Park, 12 miles from US 191 and 30 miles from the park boundary. Since December 2016, this area is part of Bears Ears National Monument. The 200 square foot rock is a part of the vertical Wingate sandstone cliffs that enclose the upper end of Indian Creek Canyon, and is covered by hundreds of ancient Indian petroglyphs (rock carvings) - one of the largest, best preserved and easily accessed groups in the Southwest. The petroglyphs have a mixture of human, animal, material and abstract forms, and to date no-one has been able to fully interpret their meaning.
History
The pictures at Newspaper Rock have been inscribed into desert varnish, a blackish manganese-iron deposit that gradually forms on exposed sandstone cliff faces owing to the action of rainfall and bacteria. The older figures are themselves becoming darker in color as new varnish slowly develops. The first carvings were made around 2,000 years ago, and although a few are as recent as the early 20th century, left by the first modern day explorers of this region, the main groups have been assigned to the Anasazi (AD 1 to 1300), Fremont (AD 700 to 1300) and Navajo (AD 1500 onwards).

From reckless corporate consolidation of the media industry, the Presidential persecution of whistle blowers to the targeting of independent wartime journalists by our military, our system has completely failed us. The continuous stream of sensationalism feeds our addiction to drama, hyperstimulating the senses with fear and novelty. The war drums beat to the tune of our racing hearts – which rage with fury over manipulated messages driven by those in power.
Personally, my advise would be to shut off the TVs – which drive us away from the essence of a meaningful existence. Ignore all mainstream messages – they are rooted in profit. Focus our thoughts and hearts to kindness, forgiveness and tolerance. The Fourth Estate will burn on its own.

One of the primary new techniques (for me) used in this build was the implementation of Lego nets (71155) for sculpting. By backing each net with smaller plates – set apart by 1 stud – and then using 1x1 round plate pips on the front side (sandwiching the net in between), I had a flexible scrim which I could then build off of. This allowed for the undulating forms in the explosion area.
This man was selling several years old newspapers to tourists sitting in Cafes at the bottom of Calle Obispo, which is the busiest tourist street of Old Havana. My brother would probably buy it. Daily Newspapers such as Granma, Juventud Rebelde, Orbe are still selling on the corners of the city by specialized vendors. I would bet, that this guy is earning more money by selling the old issues, then the guys (always guys) selling the fresh news.

I took a part in a photographic contest in newspapers called Lidové noviny, the result will be announced tomorrow but everyday they print some of the photos and this was in today's copy:)) Best viewed large:)
