The Georgia Guidestones were a mysterious and controversial monument that stood in Elbert County, Georgia, from 1980 until 2022. Commissioned in 1979 by a man using the pseudonym “R. C. Christian,” the project was funded by an anonymous group that claimed to want to leave guidance for humanity’s future. The secrecy surrounding its creators helped fuel decades of speculation and conspiracy theories.
The monument consisted of six massive granite slabs weighing more than 100 tons combined. Engraved on the stones were ten principles intended to guide humanity after a global catastrophe. These messages appeared in eight modern languages, with additional inscriptions in ancient languages. The structure also served as a kind of astronomical calendar, aligned with certain solar and celestial events.
Public reaction to the Guidestones was sharply divided. Some visitors saw them as a philosophical call for peace, environmental balance, and long-term thinking. Others viewed the inscriptions as elitist or threatening, especially references to controlling global population. Despite controversy and occasional vandalism, the monument became a popular tourist attraction often nicknamed “America’s Stonehenge.”
In July 2022, an explosion severely damaged one of the slabs. Officials later demolished the remaining structure for safety reasons. Its destruction sparked debate, with some mourning the loss of a unique piece of modern folklore and others celebrating its removal. Although no longer standing, the Georgia Guidestones remain a symbol of mystery, cultural conflict, and the power of monuments to inspire both fascination and controversy.

Een essay over de democratie, geschreven door Jan Theuninck in het begin van de 21ste eeuw, op verzoek van de uitgeefster van Poetrylifeandtimes voor haar Nederlandstalige bladzijden .

De dichter en de politiek
Mag of kan een dichter zich wagen aan het beschrijven van het politieke narrenspel? Hoe ver kan hij gaan in zijn kritische benadering van een maatschappij waarin de politieke macht zichzelf ziet als een soort godsdienst voor het volk ? Of is het soms zijn staatsburgerlijke plicht om zijn pen te scherpen aan de aberraties van de macht? Joseph Beuys zei al "wie nicht denken will fliegt raus [sich selbst]"- blijkbaar is politieke provocatie een item dat aan veel dichters voorbijgaat.
In deze cocoon-wereld brengt de dichter een dieper inzicht in de wereld om ons heen en stelt ook de politieke wereld in vraag, probeert een discussie uit te lokken via provocatie en zet vooral aan tot nadenken over wie en wat we zijn en hoe we functioneren in deze gepolitiseerde maatschappij met een aantal verwarring zaaiende diepteschermen van "Wahrheit und Dichtung"!
Dichters zijn halve zieners die de pols van de politieke en maatschappelijke evolutie voelen kloppen in hun ziel. En de politieke machthebbers? Zal de val van de muur ook hier op termijn een politieke implosie veroorzaken? Zijn we inderdaad geëvolueerd naar een soort machtsstaat waar allerlei corporaties de dienst uitmaken en waar de burger zijn rechten niet kan uitoefenen maar een "dienst" krijgt? Zijn er geen algemene regels meer maar er wordt geval per geval beslist? Worden wetten vaak gemaakt om uitgelezen groepen of zelfs één enkele politieke vriend een voordeel toe te kennen in naam van het algemeen belang? Is het toeval dat je hiaten vindt in heel wat wetten: zorgen deze er niet voor de machthebbers te laten regeren als verlichte despoten? Ontsnapt de leidende klasse aan de wet door een bescherming van het systeem? Leggen verschillende schandalen de technieken bloot die het machtssysteem chantage laat uitoefenen op sleutelfiguren die men op die manier onder controle houdt? Is het parlement een overbodige show geworden waar de gekozenen van het volk de meest absurde vragen stellen om zichzelf in het nieuws te werken en van het "serieuze" werk moeten afblijven onder dwang van een kadaverdiscipline (met het mes in de rug)? Is er een enorm verschil tussen wat de burger in het dagdagelijkse leven ervaart en wat er in de "vrije" pers wordt meegedeeld? Zijn de journalisten hondjes die aan een korte ketting liggen en alleen blaffen op bevel van hun baasje: zijn zij de promotors van het politieke "correct" denken? Is dit een symptoom van wat men een geleide democratie (of zachte dictatuur) noemt? Dient de pers om de aandacht van de burgers af te leiden van nog erger? Onze machthebbers voeren de positieve discriminatie in : is dit niet op de eerste plaats discriminatie, welk adjectief je er ook aan toevoegt? Willen onze politici in ontwikkelingslanden een toonaangevende geopolitieke rol spelen? Of is dit misschien een variante op de Italiaanse lottizazione? Waarom komt er geen verbod op politieke cumul? En wat cumuleren ze nog allemaal? Hebben ze nooit genoeg of hebben ze daartoe geen keuze in deze cleptocratie? Alle mogelijke vormen van corruptie zijn bij wet verboden: wat indien één enkele onderzoeksrechter hierin zijn tanden zou zetten, zou dit het einde van het systeem betekenen? Over capriolen die machthebbers uithalen met beursgenoteerde bedrijven kan men zich méér dan één vraag stellen. En hoe is het gesteld met de privacy van de burger? Of mogen dergelijke vragen hier niet gesteld worden? Is dit een "democratie" waar alle neuzen in dezelfde richting moeten staan? Zijn vele "democraten" alleen maar wolven in schaapskleren? Bestaat de mogelijkheid nog om dit systeem opnieuw tot een aanvaardbaar niveau gezond te maken?
Op deze en nog veel meer vragen moeten dichters en andere kunstenaars een antwoord zoeken vermits bijna iedereen in een "democratische" narcose is gewiegd.
