"Den Haag, Jewish Orphanage “Ezer Jatom” (Help for Orphans)"
---------------------------
The image shows the moment of deportation and the vulnerability of the children. A girl is waiting on the side with a briefcase in her right hand. In her other hand a doll, which she holds tightly against her, as if to derive some certainty and tenderness from it.

Until I can find the perfect image, I'm leaving this one in memory of Stacey's and Scott's son, Colin . . . for my friends and contact Scott who wrote on his website: "Artist second, dad first, friend always." May it comfort you to always remember, yesterday - the very last quote I read that your son wrote of YOU was: "My Heroes: My Loving Mother and Father". He knew you loved him in the end. Never forget. Rest in peace, Colin.

In the rising of the sun and in its going down,
we remember them;
In the blowing of the wind and the chill of the winter,
we remember them;
In the opening of buds and in the rebirth of spring,
we remember them;
In the warmth of the sun and the peace of summer,
we remember them;
In the rustling of the leaves and the beauty of autumn,
we remember them;
In the beginning of the year and when it ends,
we remember them;
When we are weary and in need of strength,
we remember them;
When we are lost and sick at heart,
we remember them;
When we have joys we yearn to share,
we remember them;
So long as we live, they too shall live,
for they are now part of us,
as we remember them.

It has since been painted over, but that was one of my favorite things to see every day on my way home from work.
East 4th Between Broadway and Lafayette
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Canadian Forces Navy sailor celebrating and remembering Remembrance Day, a very special day for all Canadians.
"Where were you when the world stopped turning on that September day?
Were you in the yard with your wife and children
Or working on some stage in L.A.?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that black smoke
Risin' against that blue sky?
Did you shout out in anger, in fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry?"
- Alan Jackson

I was deeply moved by this ceremony that took place yesterday to commemorate the armistice of May 8, 1945. It was an homage to all those who lost their lives, who survived but were never the same, who hid in attics and basements, the were deported, who died in the camps, who grew up beneath the shadow of so much atrocity, who fought for against the nazis. In their speeches, the young people of the community and the elected officials who spoke mentioned names of real people, people whose names are engraved in monuments, engraved forever in the collective memory of the nation.
A WWII Woman Veteran, not many of them left male or female.
When we think of memorial day, it's easy to forget that sometimes women (Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) also made the ultimate sacrifice as well as men. In many ways they are our forgotten heroes. This woman in the image above might be in the "Winter of her Life" but she still clings to our flag proudly.

Last year I was lucky enough to be in NYC working for 2 weeks during the Tribute Lights. Had an awesome time making new friends and roaming around the city. This may be one of my favorites. #neverforget

Remember those who served before.
Remember those who are no more.
Remember those who serve today.
Remember them as we eat and play.
Remember our protectors
who are not home today.
Remember them all on Memorial Day.

Crows have many symbolisms and when I saw this one sitting on a headstone I thought of this one, which seemed a good description of military service. -
"Crows provide the very potent power of protection. These intelligent birds are fiercely protective of their territories and their nests. They can usually manage to ward off trespassers that are much bigger than themselves.
This power, when transferred to a human, translates to vigilance and courage, especially with respect to the safety and well-being of loved ones."

On September 11, 2020, the City of Holly Springs Mississippi pays tribute to the fallen in NYC, Washington, DC and Somerset County, PA, on the same date 19 years prior.
In the first few weeks after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, I joined a few different groups of volunteers to deliver supplies to several shelters along the coast.
On one of those trips, I came across this pair of taxi drivers. They were navigating a difficult path to deliver bottles of water to their taxi dispatch office. The first floor of the office had been hit by the tsunami, but they were quick to clear out the tsunami mud and resume operations.
Most vehicles in the path of the tsunami were destroyed, including much of the taxi fleet. These drivers were critical for transportation around the city, especially for families that were evacuated into shelters, but still wanted to return home to take care of their pets, and try to clear out the debris and tsunami mud from their homes.
