I took this photo during a sunny mid-spring afternoon, in the heart of the Devil's Punch Bowl near Hindhead, Hampshire, UK. I really liked the way the scene was split between the dark evergreen trees and the lighter deciduous trees with their new leaves. The strong light from the afternoon sun helped to really bring out the colour of the leaves.

When Earth Wore the Colors of Venus

As twilight embraced Montezuma Pass, I turned my lens toward the quiet horizon—Mexico resting beneath the breath of dusk. There it was: the Belt of Venus, a delicate blush of rose-pink caressing the edge of the world, wrapped above the deepening Earth’s shadow—a quiet blue veil cast by our own planet upon its sky.

This ethereal belt forms when sunlight scatters through Earth’s atmosphere, reflecting from the opposite horizon just as the Sun dips below it. The pink hue arises from backscattered reddened sunlight, while the darker band beneath is the Earth’s umbra, slowly rising as night claims the day.

Between these two—light and shadow—the heavens whisper of cycles eternal: dusk to dawn, day to night, and the tender reminder that even Earth casts beauty in its own shadow.

The water glistens under the dappled sunlight, reflecting the vibrant greens of the surrounding trees and vegetation.

The rocks, worn smooth by the constant caress of the water, form a natural pathway through the forest. They are adorned with patches of moss, adding a touch of emerald to the earthy tones. The trees stand tall and proud, their leaves whispering secrets to the wind. From this lofty vantage point, the landscape below unfolds like a grand tapestry. The sky, heavy with clouds, parts just enough to allow rays of sunlight to pierce through, illuminating patches of the land below. This dramatic interplay of light and shadow creates a scene of ethereal beauty.

Amidst this spectacle, two distinct columns of rain descend from the clouds, adding a dynamic element to the serene landscape. These rain columns, like silver threads, connect the heavens to the earth, nourishing the verdant landscape below. A piece of wood, weathered and worn, juts out from the water, resembling the head and neck of a vigilant alligator. The illusion is so striking that it might make you do a double-take.
