This close-up of a male Northern Cardinal shows him mid-molt, with a patchy look around the head and face. His vibrant red feathers still stand out sharply.
I photographed him in my yard here in Arkansas. He landed on a branch long enough for me to capture this detailed portrait, despite his somewhat scruffy appearance.
Molting is a natural part of the cycle for cardinals and other songbirds. During late summer, they shed and regrow feathers, especially noticeable on the head. He’ll be looking sharp again soon.

The weather was strong - with days where the wind was over 30m/s but never the less the Icelandic beauty was on full display. These images are from a brief roadtrip along the South Coast.
All of these images are single exposure with basic edits - nothing added, nothing removed. The only use of AI is for moderate noise reduction.
