It would appear that today (February 9) is National Pizza Day in the USA, as decreed by, um, whoever decrees such things. Being Canadian, I don't normally celebrate American "holidays" but this is one I can definitely get behind.

Just before breakfast I whipped together my favourite go-to pizza dough recipe (Ken Forkish's "Same day straight pizza dough" from his delightful tome Flour Water Salt Yeast) and let it rise for the day.

After work, I started heating up the Baking Steel in a 500Β°F oven (I wish it could get hotter than that, but that's all my oven will do), and pulled together the sauce (Mutti Polpa tomatoes blended with 2 cloves of garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper-infused olive oil). Rolled out the dough (I have yet to matster the whole spin & toss thing) and assembled the pie with some sliced red bell pepper, sliced red onion, mozzarella, and hot/spicy calabrese sausage. Popped it onto the hot Baking Steel in the oven for 7 minutes, and voilΓ .

99 cents for a slice.

In one of the most expensive cities in the world.

True, the toppings may not be coming from the "all natural and organic" section of the local market.

But who cares?

It's a New York City slice on a chilly winter evening.

Or warm summer evening.

Doesn't matter.

Sure 99 Cent Fresh Pizza sells other things, but what for?

You're heading home from the job that was breaking your stones all day, or trying to catch your train back to NJ suburbia, or just out of the bar (when we could still do that)...and you smell that heavenly aroma.

Dig into your pocket and pull a couple of crumpled singles.

Two slices, please.

Guy behind the counter slides two hot slices, slick with the oil of the melted cheese, across to you on paper plates.

You can almost taste it... and almost do, too quickly.

The only thing that ruins a couple of slices of 99 cent pizza is burning the roof of your mouth on the cheese.

And three slices.

The third is never as good as the first two.

[Today is National Pizza Day, so I thought of this image. I posted it back in 2008 (Canon 20D, 50mm nifty fifty lens) but did a slight edit on this one to pull up the shadows a little more. Click my blog link to read more.]

It’s #NationalPizzaDay today and we are celebrating by highlighting a hidden gem independently-owned pizzeria in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Paololuigi. @pauloluigitogo was founded by New Yorker Paul Shalaj who has been making #pizza since 1973. When he relocated to Miami he brought with him his years of experience as well as a recipe for his dough passed down to him through generations. We had his amazing Margherita pie which not only is made using his brick oven but uses only the freshest ingredients and also is a massive 18 inches and costs only $19.50! National Pizza Party Day Is May 15

Not only is today a day for having a party, it is a day to party with pizza. Pizza parties can be held at restaurants, homes, or other locations. Many children look forward to pizza parties at schools as the year winds down. Breadsticks, soda, and beer are commonly served at pizza parties.

Pie-shaped flatbreads with toppings were first eaten in Naples in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. At the time, this coastal city was not part of Italy, but its own kingdom. The working poor, or lazzaroni, lived outside or in small homes, and needed cheap food. Pizza consisted of flatbread with toppings such as tomatoes, garlic, cheese, oil, or anchovies, and it was sold by street vendors and informal restaurants, and eaten for any meal. Pizza didn't end up becoming popular in the rest of Italy until the 1940s.

It was in the United States, where Neapolitans immigrated to, that pizza gained in popularity. The first pizzeria in the United States was Lombardi's, which was started in New York City in 1905. Lombardi's is still in business, and although it is in a new location, the original oven is still in use. Neapolitans brought pizza to many other cities, including Trenton, New Haven, St. Louis, Chicago, and Boston. Pizza became popular all over the country, especially following World War II. Many styles of crusts and different toppings became popular in different regions. Eventually, pizza made its way back to Italy, as well as to other parts of the world.

How to Observe

Celebrate the day by getting your friends together and having a pizza party! Invite people over to your house and order a bunch of different types of pizzas to try. Besides ordering them, you could prepare pizzas on your own, possibly even by making them from scratch. Perhaps you could buy ingredients and have your guests build their own pizzas. Or, you could have guests make their own at home and bring them to share. You could host a pizza party at a restaurant, maybe at one of the best pizzerias in the United States. Why not have a pizza crawl? Split a pizza with your friends at a pizzeria, and then go to another pizzeria and do it again. Maybe everyone could rate the pizzas as you travel from place to place. The options for how to celebrate the day are almost as endless as the pizza combinations you could eat!

You know you're going to need a healthy supply and variety of pizzas when you have these guys drop in from their lair in the sewer. (But don't tell Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, or Raphael that there's more pizza inside that pizza van.)

February 9th is National Pizza Pie Day

The Spicy Italian: House Red Sauce, Spicy Sausage, Salami, Mozzarella, Fresh Basil, Garlic, Chili Flakes, Garlic Herb Butter Blend

I couldn't let National Pizza Day go without baking a pizza!... but, I didn't have any homemade pizza dough so I just bought a pre-made one in a tube. Our oven isn't working so I decided to make a dish pizza and bake it in our roaster thingy. I put pasta sauce, fresh Basil, Chicken Sausage and Mozzarella cheese. It turned out OK...
