Space and space missions fascinate me. I went to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. The Destination Moon exhibition uses a combination of actual F-1 rocket engines and mirrors to create the visual effect of all five boosters from a Saturn V rocket’s first stage. The display technique demonstrates the configuration of the massive engines that powered Apollo missions to the Moon.

A lot is currently under reconstruction, less than half is on display. I was fascinated by the Apollo mission. The museum features also the Apollo 11 Command Module that returned from the first manned lunar landing mission in July 1969. Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins were launched from Cape Kennedy atop a Saturn V rocket.

I processed a balanced and a paintery HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, and carefully adjusted the curves and color balance. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

In the 1930s, the National Air Races were the biggest spectator sport around, drawing more than 100,000 to the annual event over the skies of Cleveland. And its biggest star may have been the sleek, silver Turner RT-14 Meteor, the only repeat Thompson Trophy winner, reaching maximum speeds of up to 300 mph before it was retired in 1939 after just 30 hours of flying time.

The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) was a battery powered "dune buggy" taken to the moon on Apollo missions 15, 16, and 17. The LRV was stowed on the descent stage of the Lunar Module and deployed upon arrival at the lunar surface. The LRV was operated with a spacecraft "stick," rather than a steering wheel.

In addition to the flight vehicles, Boeing manufactured eight non-flight units for development and testing. One, the "Qualification Test Unit," was a very close replica of the units that flew. Using special test chambers, engineers purposely subjected the qualification unit to conditions many times as severe as those expected on an actual mission. When the tests were finished, given the stresses it had been subject to, the qualification unit could not safely be used in space. In 1975, NASA transferred it to the Museum.

The Mars Pathfinder (MPF) spacecraft consisted of a stationary lander and a separate rover called Sojourner. The rover rested on one of the three MPF solar panels that were folded over the spacecraft during launch and interplanetary cruise. MPF entered the martian atmosphere directly on July 4, 1997 traveling at nearly 7,300 m/s. The entry vehicle's heat shield slowed the spacecraft to 400 m/s in about 160 seconds before deployment of the parachute and airbags.

Exploration reveals that our solar system is filled with amazingly diverse places that transform our understanding of Earth and worlds beyond.

The Kenneth C. Griffin Exploring the Planets Gallery probes the science and history of our exploration of planets and moons. This exhibit tells the stories of the diversity of worlds circling our Sun and how exploring those worlds helps enhance our own understanding of Earth. Exploring the Planets draws on research from scientists in the Museum’s Center for Earth and Planetary Studies, who are actively involved in current planetary missions.
