With an healthy cut of woodchips cars on the head end, the six-days-a-week, Senneterre to Garneau L573 job rolls along Lac-Masketsi at the former location of Gouin station under a well deserved patch of sun on this somewhat overall windy, rainy and cold day in northern Québec, along the former National Transcontinental Railway right of way.

A long way from pulling fast trains over DT&I and GTW lines, former GTW 6214 is at the helm of CN L571 job, deep in the Abitibi part of northern Quebec province, rulling a short local job toward the end of the former National Transcontinental Railway's Moncton - Winnipeg mainline, now sadly relegated to an branchline status.

The size of the bridge crossing over Harricana River tell a lot about how NTR builders once saw their railway; the fastest route linking Maritimes with western Canada, ready to move heavy tonnage at low cost.

History tell us otherwise.

Sitting bare feet into northern Quebec's typical soil, CN M365 is rolling toward Garneau Yard on a cloudless fall day, bringing raw product toward Canadian and American markets.

Black flies and biting midge gave us no break while waiting in the middle of nowhere. I could only relate what NTR crews faced building this spectacular piece of trackage.

Surrounded by typical northern Ontario conifers, ONR 313 is making up good time between Fauquier and Moonbeam on the former National Transcontinental Railway right of way.

Hearst is still 74-mile away for this crew of two who went on duty in Cochrane at 0430.

Standard cabs and jointed rails...

Having left Cochrane at 0530, 313 Is now just past Opasatika with ON 2202 & ON 1805 on the head end, pulling about 1500' ft of traffic bound for Hearst, Oba and beyond.

31 Years have passed since CN sold the Kapuskasing Subdivision to the Ontario Northland Transport Comission and yet, CN heritage can still be found along the line if you look close enough.

Part of the original NTR project, the CN La Tuque Subdivision has three major trestles ; Cap-Rouge, Rivière-du-Milieu and this one, St-Adelphe. Unfortunately, it has not seen any regular traffic since 2008 and now appears to be in a poor shape. Lately, CN officially announced their intention to abandon this 30-mile leg of dormant track locally known as "Le Petit La Tuque".
