Once a part of ECHELON, a global network of listening stations, Teufelsberg was erected on the hill and run by the U.S. National Security Agency to eavesdrop on communist East Berlin.

I have had something of a fascination with the ECHELON network, ever since I was stopped and searched by anti-terrorism police outside the American Menwith Hill signals intelligence base in Yorkshire some years ago. As such, it was a real buzz to get within the borders of one of their former properties.

The NSA Field Station Berlin Teufelsberg was one of the premier listening posts of the cold war. Situated on top of the highest elevation in West Berlin, the station had unobstructed reception of signals from all directions. But as far as they were concerned, all directions meant "East". Situated on an artificial hill near a string of lakes, the Teufelsberg enjoyed excellent reception in most radio bands that were otherwise difficult to receive at long distances.

In Berlin, recent revelations that the NSA may have listened to Chancellor Merkel's cell phone have created a wave of protest. But even back at the time of its inception, the German government was aware of US-spying tactics from places like Teufelsberg.

During times of Cold War, NSA officials used the listening station on top of Berlin's Teufelsberg to spy upon the territory of socialist German Democratic Republic. Nowadays, both the stations' ruins as well as the surrounding property are owned by private investors and usually not open to the public.

Busscar Panorâmico DD / Scania K-420 Serie 5

Es sabido por todos que lamentablemente este precioso modelo de Busscar, el nuevo Panorâmico DD, no ha podido masificarse como correponde por el drama financiero que ha tenido semi-estancada la producción de la carrocería de Joinville. En Chile hay 12 y es una suerte verlos circular, el modelo es espectacular, de líneas rectas pero muy moderno, elegante y sofisticado. A Paraguay alcanzaron a entregar varias unidades, la mayoría para el Holding NSA, fiel a Busscar y Scania, y un Mercedes para Expreso Guaraní que subí a esta galería hace un par de meses. Se ven preciosos, el corte de la empresa es simplecito pero les queda excelente a estos Panorâmicos, el blanco de fondo se ve super bien, y los anillos en esos colores le dan mucha elegancia, se ve precioso a mi juicio. Por último el NSA grande en la zona trasera sirve para darle más vida al corte. Gran chassis, K-420 de la Serie 5, que mejor y en una empresa donde conocen esa marca como la palma de su mano. Buena configuración, "a la Paraguaya", con la puerta de acceso para los pasajeros al final del Salón del primer piso y el baño ubicado también atrás. Las llantas relucientes, se ve que las cuidan, está impecable y buenísima para los servicios Internacionales del Holding Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (con sus filiales Chevallier Paraguaya y en el caso de esta máquina, Yacyreta). Quizás el único puno en contra es el plotter del parabrisas del segundo piso, ojalá no sea muy molesto para los pasajeros, exteriormente me gusta como se ve pero si dificulta la visual del pasajero es un mal detalle. El resto impecable, lindísimo modelo con excelentes detalles, corte elegante, la máquina super bien cuidada, nada que decir, una pena que Busscar no retome aún su producción con normalidad total. De hecho, esta empresa, uno de los más fieles a Busscar en Sudamérica, tuvo que optar por unos Paradiso 1800 Scania en su última renovación, al igual que la emresa argentina Andesmar que optó por Metalsur.
