A Northern Plains Railroad grain train rolls west of Warren on a blustery day in NW Minnesota. Once the train passed, it was literally a white out for the paralleling highway.
Northern Plains Railroad #1761 is a GP9 built in 1954 for the Union Pacific. The locomotive has been through a myriad of owners since then, most notably the Kyle Railroad, whose paint still adorns the Geep. Now owned by the NPR, the unit has called the Twin Ports home for the last several years, working briefly on the North Shore Scenic before heading across the river to Superior. The locomotive now is stationed at the Superior Refinery and appears to be the backup unit for the GATX GP15 that is also leased there.
I was interviewed on NPR's All Things Considered today regarding the new version of the administration's transgender policy.

NPR SD40T-2 2853 and NPR SD60F 5525 are awaiting their next assignment at the Fordville Yard, ND. With only 2 units painted in the NPR colors it was a must to get shots of the 1 on the property at the time. The old CN SD60F was 1 of 2 active SD60Fs at the time while the other was in the shop getting load tested. The NPR is a class act and thanks to the people who allowed these photos to be taken. back in 2014, NPR had a sand customer in Lansford during the heyday of the Bakken craziness..of course like many other Bakken era customers have left the area..
Don't really know much about this unit, saw it driving by and decided to get out and take some pictures of it.
Northern Plains' TRF Turn passes through what remains of Rosewood, Minnesota. Most of the old town buildings are now private homes or storage. Rosewood was the first stop out of Thief River Falls on the Wheat Line roughly eight miles north and west of town. Today the NPR rolls through several times a week.
NPR 2853 is so far the only locomotive on the roster to get proper Northern Plains paint job. Some of the older geeps have a blue and yellow paint scheme, but it mimics the Santa Fe.
A side profile roster shot of NPR 1905, now classified at a GP9 locomotive originally built as Rock Island 1282 before operating under the Chicago Northwestern and later Dakota and Iowa. The unit is not assigned to the Farmer's Elevator Company of Honeyford in Honeyford, North Dakota at the southern end of the spur from Forest River down through Gilby and Johnstown. The railroad was the Northern Pacific route from Grand Forks to Pembina and Winnipeg. It hosted NP's passenger train to Winnipeg. A Budd RDC used to traverse this area, imagine.

Designed by Sorg Architects, the 87,000 SF, 14-story mixed-use building will consist of 12 floors of micro studio apartments (124 units) over office and retail spaces on the ground level and community/office spaces on the second floor. Upon completion, the John and Jill Ker Conway Residence will offer a wide range of amenities including conference space, management offices, a lounge, fitness center, retail space, and social services. The project will follow Enterprise Green Communities for New Construction. Expected project completion is Winter 2015.
The John and Jill Ker Conway Residence has been named in honor of Jill Ker Conway and her late husband, John. Ms. Conway is a Pulitzer Prize-nominated memoirist and Harvard-trained historian. She has been influenced by the experiences of her father and her husband, both of whom were military Veterans whose lives were changed due to their respective war experiences. Her husband, John, was awarded the Military Cross for heroism.
