On July 2019, NMR celebrated the 14th anniversary of its induction as a Unesco World Heritage Site. Now, along with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway and the Kalka-Shimla Railway, NMR is also part of the heritage ‘Mountain Railways of India’.
NMR has more than a few distinctions. On its 46 km journey, the little blue train climbs from 325 m to 2,240 m, negotiating along the way the steepest gradient of any railway line in South Asia. It does this with its rack and pinion system - it is the only rack railway in India - where cog wheels mesh with a toothed rack rail to ease the climb.
NMR uses one of the world’s oldest engines, 'X' Class steam rack locomotives, manufactured by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works of Winterthur in Switzerland, on the rack and pinion section of its tracks.
When this railway was completed in 1908, the last stop was the hill town of Coonoor. The line was later extended to Ooty (Udhagamandalam). It now passes through 13 stations: Mettupalayam, Kallar (now closed for passengers), Adderley, Hillgrove, Runnymede, Katteri, Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, Ketti, Lovedale, Fernhill and Ooty.
These train journeys offer some of the best experiences as they chug on routes that have been carved through mountains and beautiful valleys.
The train leaves Mettupalayam at 7.10 each morning, switches from a steam to a diesel engine at Coonoor station, and chugs into Ooty at noon. [description Courtesy :- The Hindu News ]

From 1840 Cononley produced an average of 470 tons of lead ore per year until 1870, when output fell rapidly as the available ore was exhausted and new reserves were not found. The mine closed briefly in the slump of 1872, but reopened with a much smaller workforce before finally closing in 1881. www.nmrs.org.uk/mines-map/metal/mid-pennine-mines/fsouth/...

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) is metre gauge railway in Tamil Nadu, India, built by the British in 1908. NMR uses 'X' Class steam rack locomotives, manufactured by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works of Winterthur in Switzerland, on the rack and pinion section of its tracks. The steam locomotives are marshalled at the downhill (Mettupalayam) end of the train. The average gradient in this rack section is 1 in 24.5 (4.08%), with a maximum of 1 in 12 (8.33%).
Here, the employees pose as they continue working on on of the Engines.

The crew of 08492 'Barnsley' have run the empty wagons under the coal loader of Barnburgh colliery then run back down to the front to back up onto a rake that is almost fully loaded. The coal has come up straight from the seams over 700 meters below the ground but there is no screening plant here. The railways job was to take the coal down to Manvers Main colliery, two miles south west, which had closed in March 1988 but where the screens still remained. This was common on larger colliery systems where mines spread out to tap the local coal seams and connecting railway systems fed the the coal to the main colliery complex to be screened, graded and railed out.

Crossing the pit lane and spotted the sunrise so I thought I'd quickly take a snap before a race car ran me over! Hand held, one shot and it came out like this, very happy with the result! Topped off a superb weekend where we came 2nd overall in a Class 3 car :)

The NMR-14 is a built-to-order marksman rifle designed with low-light operations in mind.
Despite having an integral suppressor, the NMR-14 operates on a short-recoil system; negating much of the felt recoil. Each NMR-14 comes standard with an IRNV optic.
