This is an old photo I took at Zion National Park in Utah several years ago. I found this while cleaning up some old photo files, and figured I post this since I have not yet posted this particular image. Angels Landing is the peak in the center of the photo. This image was taken from Observation Point, at the end of a beautiful hike that is one of my favorites.
Monument Valley, located on the Navajo Nation within Arizona and Utah, has been featured in many forms of media since the 1930s. It is perhaps most famous for its use in many John Ford films. It has also been featured in such films as Easy Rider, Forrest Gump, and The Eiger Sanction. The twin buttes of Monument Valley ("the Mittens"), the Moccasin Arch, and the Eye of the Sun, among other features, have developed iconic status.
Medicine Lake is located within Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada.
It is not actually a lake in fall and winter as the water disappears underground, becoming a mudflat with scattered pools of water. The underground system is extensive and during the 1970s researchers used a biodegradable dye to determine the underground river's extent. The dye showed up in many of the lakes and rivers in the area to the point where it became clear that the underground system was one of the most extensive in the world.
Summer melt water coming into the lake exceeds the capacity of the sinkholes to drain it. Decreased melt water in the late summer and fall means that the lake's sinkholes can drain the lake faster then the Maligne River can fill it. This creates the disappearing lake phenomena. Aboriginal peoples called the lake Medicine because of its seemingly magical powers, and the United Nations created the Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site partly because of this unique drainage system.
The traces of the 2015 wildfire can also be seen in the photo.

A small island nation exists in the intertidal zone along the Mendocino Coast of California. This nation of round rocks is no stranger to flooding, and the communities that reside there are well-adapted.
Residents of the higher intertidal zones can either close themselves up in their shells to remain moist and ward off predators, or can retreat to a submerged zone when the tide goes out. In the lower parts of the intertidal zone, marine life has adapted a different survival strategy. These plants and animals anchor themselves in place (e.g., barnacles, mussels, and kelps). Their evolution has led them to be either sturdy, very flexible, or otherwise well suited to stand up to wave energy.
