This stunning image of the dwarf planet was captured from New Horizons at about 4 p.m. EDT on July 13, about 16 hours before the moment of closest approach. The spacecraft was 476,000 miles (766,000 kilometers) from the surface.

At 1 p.m. EDT (10 a.m. PDT) on Friday, Aug. 28, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, will host a live TV program about agency research into how and why the massive Greenland ice sheet is changing. The event features scientists actively conducting field work in Greenland, along with extensive video footage of their work performed over this summer.
Panelists include: Tom Wagner (cryosphere program scientist with NASA's Earth Science Division), Laurence Smith (chair of the University of California, Los Angeles Department of Geography), Mike Bevis (professor of geodynamics at Ohio State University in Columbus), Sophie Nowicki (physical scientist at Goddard), and Josh Willis (JPL).

The new year is off to a hot start for NASA's Space Launch System (SLS). The engine that will drive America's next great rocket to deep space blazed through its first successful test Jan. 9 at the agency's Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
The RS-25, formerly the space shuttle main engine, fired up for 500 seconds on the A-1 test stand at Stennis, providing NASA engineers critical data on the engine controller unit and inlet pressure conditions. This is the first hot fire of an RS-25 engine since the end of space shuttle main engine testing in 2009. Four RS-25 engines will power SLS on future missions, including to an asteroid and Mars.
"We’ve made modifications to the RS-25 to meet SLS specifications and will analyze and test a variety of conditions during the hot fire series,” said Steve Wofford, manager of the SLS Liquid Engines Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, where the SLS Program is managed. "The engines for SLS will encounter colder liquid oxygen temperatures than shuttle; greater inlet pressure due to the taller core stage liquid oxygen tank and higher vehicle acceleration; and more nozzle heating due to the four-engine configuration and their position in-plane with the SLS booster exhaust nozzles.”
The engine controller unit, the "brain" of the engine, allows communication between the vehicle and the engine, relaying commands to the engine and transmitting data back to the vehicle. The controller also provides closed-loop management of the engine by regulating the thrust and fuel mixture ratio while monitoring the engine's health and status. The new controller will use updated hardware and software configured to operate with the new SLS avionics architecture.
"This first hot-fire test of the RS-25 engine represents a significant effort on behalf of Stennis Space Center’s A-1 test team," said Ronald Rigney, RS-25 project manager at Stennis. "Our technicians and engineers have been working diligently to design, modify and activate an extremely complex and capable facility in support of RS-25 engine testing."
Testing will resume in April after upgrades are completed on the high pressure industrial water system, which provides cool water for the test facility during a hot fire test. Eight tests, totaling 3,500 seconds, are planned for the current development engine. Another development engine later will undergo 10 tests, totaling 4,500 seconds. The second test series includes the first test of new flight controllers, known as green running.
The first flight test of the SLS will feature a configuration for a 70-metric-ton (77-ton) lift capacity and carry an uncrewed Orion spacecraft beyond low-Earth orbit to test the performance of the integrated system. As the SLS is upgraded, it will provide an unprecedented lift capability of 130 metric tons (143 tons) to enable missions even farther into our solar system.

A billowing plume of steam signals a successful 450-second test of the RS-25 rocket engine May 28 at NASA's Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. The hotfire test was conducted on the historic A-1 Test Stand where Apollo Program rocket stages and Space Shuttle Program main engines also were tested. RS-25 engines tested on the stand will power the core stage of NASA's new rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS), which is being developed to carry humans deeper into space than ever before. The heavy-lift SLS will be more powerful than any current rocket and will be the centerpiece of the nation's next era of space exploration, carrying humans to an asteroid and eventually to Mars. Four RS-25 engines will power the SLS vehicle at launch, firing simultaneously to generate more than 1.6 million pounds of thrust. Designed and built by Aerojet Rocketdyne, RS-25 engines are modified Space Shuttle Main Engines, which powered 135 successful low-Earth orbit missions. One of the objectives being evaluated in this test is the new engine controller, or "brain." The RS-25 is unique among many engines in that it automatically runs through its cycles and programs. The controller monitors the engine conditions and communicates the performance needs. The performance specifications, such as what percentage of thrust is needed and when, are programmed into the controller before the engines are fired. For example, if the engine is required to cycle up to 90 percent thrust, the controller monitors the fuel mixture ratio and regulates the thrust accordingly. It is essential that the controller communicates clearly with the engine; the SLS will be bigger than previous rockets and fly unprecedented missions, and its engines will have to perform in new ways. Tests at Stennis will ensure the new controller and engine are in sync and can deliver the required performance to meet the SLS requirements. NASA engineers conducted an initial RS-25 engine test on the A-1 stand Jan. 9. Testing then was put on hold for scheduled work on the Stennis facility high-pressure industrial water system that provides the tens of thousands of gallons of water needed to cool the stand during an engine test. RS-25 testing now is set to continue through the summer.

In auto racing parlance, NASA engineers put the “pedal to the metal” during a July 17 test of its Space Launch System (SLS) RS-25 rocket engine at Stennis Space Center. During a 535-second test, operators ran the RS-25 through a series of power levels, including a period of firing at 109 percent of the engine’s rated power. Data collected on performance of the engine at the various power levels will aid in adapting the former space shuttle engines to the new SLS vehicle mission requirements, including development of an all-new engine controller and software. Four RS-25 engines will use the added performance to help power the SLS core stage during launch. The SLS is being developed to carry humans deeper into space than ever before, to such destinations as an asteroid and Mars. When fully developed, the heavy-lift version of the spacecraft will be the largest, most powerful rocket ever built. Prior to the first launch – Exploration Mission-1, the SLS first stage will be tested on the B-2 Test Stand at Stennis, which will involve simultaneously firing its four RS-25 engines just as they would during an actual launch. Modifications are continuing to prepare the B-2 stand for the test series. Meanwhile, during the July 17 development engine test on the nearby A-1 Test Stand, operators continued to collect data on engine performance under various conditions. They also collected data on performance of the new controller, which monitors and controls engine performance. Aerojet Rocketdyne of Sacramento, California, is the prime contractor for the RS-25 engine work. Two additional tests of the RS-25 engine are planned before the current test series concludes by early September and a new test series begins on four engines for a future flight.

Four RS-25 engines will power NASA's new rocket, the Space Launch System, at speeds of 17,500 mph -- 73 times faster than the top speeds of an Indianapolis 500 race car -- to send astronauts on future missions beyond Earth’s orbit, including to an asteroid and ultimately to Mars.
This is the third firing of an RS-25 development engine on the A-1 test stand at Stennis. The first RS-25 test in this series was conducted Jan. 9, and the second was May 28. Four more tests are planned for the current development engine.
"While we are using proven space shuttle hardware with these engines, SLS will have different performance requirements," said Steve Wofford, manager of the SLS Liquid Engines Office at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The Marshall Center manages the SLS Program for the agency. "That's why we are testing them again. This is a whole new ballgame -- we need way more power for these engines to be able to go farther than ever before when it comes to human exploration. And we believe the modifications we've made to these engines can do just that."
The first flight test of the SLS -- designated as Exploration Mission 1 -- will feature a configuration for a 70-metric-ton (77-ton) lift capacity and carry an uncrewed Orion spacecraft beyond low-Earth orbit to test the performance of the integrated system.
"We have several objectives that will be accomplished during this test series, which will provide critical data on the new engine controller unit, materials and engine propellant inlet pressure conditions," Wofford added.

South Mississippi was hotter than usual on June 25 when the fire and heat produced by the longest test firing yet of a Space Launch System (SLS) RS-25 rocket engine at NASA’s John C. Stennis Space Center combined with already climbing summer temperatures. Engineers conducted a 650-second test of a RS-25 developmental engine as part of its preparation for a return to deep-space missions aboard the new Space Launch System rocket. NASA is designing the SLS to carry humans deeper into space than ever before, to such destinations as an asteroid and Mars. The core stage of the new vehicle will be powered by four RS-25 engines, former space shuttles main engines operated at slightly higher power levels to provide the additional thrust needed to power the SLS. The main goal of the series is to test the engine under simulated temperature, pressure and other changes required by the SLS design. The series also supports the development of a new controller, or “brain,” for the engine. The controller monitors the engine status and communicates the programmed performance needs. The first test in the series was in January. Testing resumed in May after scheduled work was completed on the high-pressure industrial water system that provides the tens of thousands of gallons of water needed during an engine test. Today’s test firing, the fourth in the series, expands on the performance objectives of the first two firings, allowing engineers to better understand the engine under a range of operating conditions. Three additional tests are scheduled in July and August before the initial series is completed. Each test moves NASA a step closer to a new national era of space exploration. As the SLS evolves, it will provide an unprecedented lift capability of 130 metric tons (143 tons) to enable missions farther into our solar system to places like Mars.

As of 11pm on Monday night (April 11), no one knew for sure when the #SpaceX drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” carrying the #CRS8 #Falcon9 would arrive in port. Forums, Twitter, the SpaceX reddit page and Facebook were all full of theories that predicted arrivals as early as midnight and as late as mid-day Tuesday (April 12).
I arrived at Jetty Park at around 11:45pm and found a small group of people already assembled, including ever-talented (and always entertaining) colleagues Julian Leek, Jeff Seibert and Lane Hermann. It was a lovely night, so I set up a camera looking east down the channel and started shooting star trails. Someone had a marine band radio and at around 12:15am we heard the news we were all eagerly awaiting: the captain of the tugboat Elsbeth III told the port pilot boat that they expected to be at “the dogleg” at around 1:30am, after some personnel loading and unloading – this detail started the rumor that Elon Musk himself was being ferried out to the drone ship to inspect the rocket. (As best I know, Elon was not present.)
The tugboat captain also declared via radio that it was “the prettiest night in the history of the world”. While perhaps not the prettiest ever (in the history of the world), it was most certainly a great night to be standing under the stars, waiting for the first stage of a Falcon9 rocket to come home.
About this image: I started the time lapse at 1:02am and let it run until 1:49am. My settings through most of the lapse were ISO400, f4 with an exposure time of 30 seconds. The whole thing is shot through an EF17-40L lens, set to 17mm.
At this point I should also explain that there was one report on Reddit that the Falcon9 was lit, but we weren’t really sure if that was in fact true. (Everything you read on the interwebs, on Reddit in particular, that’s of course all true, right?) As we waited, Julian tested a flash that was so bright Jeff insisted Julian needed to shout “clear” before firing it. We also lined up our cars so they were facing the water so that if the rocket weren’t lit, we’d all turn on our headlights and hope that we could light the rocket.
So imagine our delight when, behind the buildings to the right of the frame (and east of us, toward the pier), we began to just make out the top of the rocket, creeping closer…and it was lit.
As the “OCISLY” carrying the Falcon9 entered the channel, I adjusted the settings to ISO1000 and an exposure of 6 seconds for the last frames in order to bring out just a bit of detail in the rocket – that’s the staggered white line curving around the entrance to the channel. I included one more frame, taken 2 minutes after I stopped the lapse (at 1:47am), to show the lit Falcon9 separate from the streak it created as it moved into the channel. The purple lights are from the tugboat Elsbeth III, and the green and white lines are from the pilot’s boat leaving the channel and there was at least one more tugboat that exited the channel before the rocket entered the port.

Engineers have taken a crucial step in preparing to test parts of NASA's Space Launch System (SLS) rocket that will send humans to new destinations in the solar system. They installed on Thursday an RS-25 engine on the A-1 Test Stand at the agency's Stennis Space Center near Bay St. Louis, Mississippi.
The Stennis team will perform developmental and flight certification testing of the RS-25 engine, a modified version of the space shuttle main engine that powered missions into space from 1981 to 2011. The SLS's core stage will be powered by a configuration of four RS-25 engines, like the one recently installed on the A-1 stand.
"This test series is a major milestone because it will be our first opportunity to operate the engine with a new controller and to test propellant inlet conditions for SLS that are different than the space shuttle," said Steve Wofford, SLS Liquid Engines Element manager. "This testing will confirm the RS-25 will be successful at powering SLS."
Early tests on the engine will collect data on the performance of its new advanced engine controller and other modifications. The controller regulates valves that direct the flow of propellant to the engine, which determines the amount of thrust generated during an engine test, known as a hotfire test. In flight, propellant flow and engine thrust determine the speed and trajectory of a spacecraft. The controller also regulates the engine startup sequence, which is especially important on an engine as sophisticated as the RS-25. Likewise, the controller determines the engine shutdown sequence, ensuring it will proceed properly under both normal and emergency conditions.
"Installation of RS-25 engine No. 0525 signals the launch of another major rocket engine test project for human space exploration on the A-1 Test Stand," said Gary Benton, RS-25 rocket engine test project manager at Stennis.
The SLS is designed to carry astronauts in NASA's Orion spacecraft deeper into space than ever before, to destinations including an asteroid and Mars. NASA is using existing and in-development hardware and infrastructure, including the RS-25 engine, to the maximum extent possible to enable NASA to begin deep space missions sooner.
Testing of engine No. 0525 begins in the coming weeks on a test stand originally built in the 1960s for Apollo-era engines that helped launch the lunar missions. The stand has since been used for several major testing projects, and NASA spent almost a year modifying the structure to accommodate the RS-25 engine.
The SLS Program is managed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Aerojet Rocketdyne of Sacramento, California, is on contract with NASA to adapt the RS-25 engines for SLS missions.

first i want to point out that this is on a 42" lcd hdtv in the living room and i use a wireless kb and mouse...
second, pretty much everything you see is Yahoo! Widgets, Rainmeter, ObjectDock, and Stickies... if you want your desktop like mine, just google those names...
on the left is our budget for the month using Stickies, but, if you look, it is a bit transparent and you will see it is actually the top sticky atop a few others, but this is the only open one - they roll up... (i hide windows desktop icons under my sticky notes...) you can see i have another little note in the middle of the screen, at the top...
beneath the budget are a couple icons of stuff i need to do - check out the PlayOn app, put Iron Man on my mom's psp, etc.... it's sorta' my to-do stack... and the bottom left hand corner - that little blue thing - i can drag a file onto that and it will auto-magically upload it to the 'stuff' directory on my website...
ok, at the bottom edge is ObjectDock - ya' know, like the dock on a mac... it is hidden until i hover my mouse at the bottom of the screen and, as my mouse moves, the icons under it enlarge... in this pic, i clicked on 'APPS' and it opened the assortment of apps i keep handy... not pictured is the other ObjectDock, which i have set up as the system tray/task bar - it's hidden on the left... i have used ObjectDock (paid version) for years and can't live without it... it does many more tricks i won't get into here...
ok, the news headlines are Rainmeter - which is like a widget engine, but not for the faint-of-heart - it is very complex to customize and you need to have some coding knowledge... as you see, i have rss feeds from home-barista for coffee geek discussions, playstation lifestyle for ps3/psp stuff and google for "real" news...
in the middle, since i love love love photography, a Yahoo Widget showing recent popular photos posted on DeviantArt on the left and another Yahoo Widget on the right with recent popular photos posted to Flickr... they are set to change every few minutes... i leave room since the photos come in all shapes and sizes... both have very impressive customization settings as far as what kind of content to show... for instance, the deviantart widget, of course, has tons more types of art than photography and the flickr widget can show your own stream, favorites, photos from groups and/or contacts, and you can even use it to upload to flickr...
at the top, pretty obvious, Yahoo Widgets for date/time, cpu usage, and upload/download speed...
which brings us to the right edge... i have been a webcam junkie for years and this is a Yahoo Widget called WebImages - several instances of it, of course... i have used several methods for desktop webcam monitoring and this one blows all the others away... the depth of options and customization can be intimidating at first and there is a bit of a learning curve, but it is SOOOO worth it... the radar is the local weather radar, of course... the rest are cams that update once a minute... i have each set up to sort of a theme and each contains more than one cam - when it updates, it switches to the next cam that one monitors... for instance, the top is local - alternating between a cam in cloudcroft and one in las cruces... the next down is home - albuquerque - four different cams and once a minute, it shows a different view... the next three are assorted cool/interesting places - cams in las vegas, italy, california, and others - all three contain a list of all my favorite cams around the world and, once a minute (or whatever i choose to set it to from once a second to once a day) it cycles to the next cam in its list... or, if one of them has something really interesting going on, i stop the cycling and set it to update in near-real-time and each one has a button when you mouse over it to enlarge it as big as you like... you can hit another button to save the current image, even...
but, now i'm gushing ;P
oh, and the very bottom one is NASATV - the widget can stream the video, but, i just have it set to show a still every 15 seconds...
anyway... that's my desktop...

The Oregonian
The Oregonian is the major daily newspaper in Portland, Oregon, owned by Advance Publications. It is the oldest continuously published newspaper on the U.S. West Coast,[3] founded as a weekly by Thomas J. Dryer on December 4, 1850. It is the largest newspaper in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest by circulation.[4]
The paper received the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Its journalists have received six others, among them: Explanatory Reporting (1999), Feature Writing (2001), Editorial Writing (2006), and the Breaking News Reporting (2007).
The Oregonian focuses its content on the Portland metropolitan area, but is available in most parts of Oregon and the Clark County area of Washington.
The paper maintains an online presence through OregonLive.com, a website controlled by Advance Publications' New Jersey-based web division.
Under Rowe's leadership
According to Editor & Publisher, soon after Sandra Rowe, the paper's current editor, arrived in 1993, she introduced organizational changes to the newsroom. Instead of having a large number of general assignment reporters, Rowe organized them around teams, many of which often develop "subject expertise" that "reflect[s] the interests of readers, not traditional newsroom boundaries."[1]. Examples (over the years) include "Northwest Issues and Environment", "Living In the '90s"/"How We Live", "Politics and Accountability", "Health, Science, and Medicine", "Sustainability and Growth", and "Higher Education".[1][6] Accompanying the reorganization was a more bottom-up approach to identifying stories: "instead of having an assignment-driven newspaper, you have the beat reporters coming to editors with what is going on", with the team editors responsible for deciding what stories were covered by their teams.[1]
The position of public editor was established at The Oregonian in 1993. The role was filled at first by Robert Caldwell[7]; Michele McLellan took over the role three years later and was delegated the authority to decide whether or not an error on the part of the newspaper resulted in the publication of a correction.[8] When Michael Arrieta-Walden ended his three-year term at the position in 2006, no successor was named.[9]
Newsroom staff in 2008 is about the same size as it was when Rowe arrived, though there are 50 fewer full-time staff members than there were in 2002; about half of those positions were eliminated after a buyout in late 2007.[1] The paper's outside news bureaus grew from four to six during her tenure.
History
The Oregonian was founded as the Weekly Oregonian in 1850. In 1861, its ownership passed to Henry Pittock in settlement of back wages, and the paper began publishing on a daily basis.[10] Between the dates of 1866 and 1872 Harvey W. Scott was the editor.[citation needed] In 1881, the Sunday Oregonian was first published. The paper would became known as the voice of business-oriented Republicans in an age when each main point of view was represented by a Portland daily.
1900-1950
In 1922, The Morning Oregonian launched KGW, Oregon's first commercial radio station. Five years later in 1927, KGW became affiliated with NBC. The Morning Oregonian purchased its second station, KEX, in 1933, from NBC subsidiary Northwest Broadcasting Co. In 1944, KEX was sold to Westinghouse Radio Stations, Inc. The Oregonian launched KGW-FM, the Northwest's first FM station,[citation needed] in 1946,(acclaimed by "The Oregonian" May 8, 1946) known today as KKRZ. Both KGW and KGW-FM were then sold to King Broadcasting Co in 1953.
In 1937, The Morning Oregonian shortened its name to The Oregonian. Two years later, associate editor Ronald G. Callvert received a Pulitzer Prize for editorial reporting for "distinguished editorial writing...as exemplified by the editorial entitled "My Country 'Tis of Thee."[11]. In 1950, Advance Publications founder S. I. "Si" Newhouse purchased the paper. At that time, the sale price of $5.6 million was the largest for a single newspaper.[citation needed] In 1954, Newhouse bought 50% of Mount Hood Radio & Television Broadcasting Corp, which broadcasts KOIN-TV, Portland's first VHF television station, and KOIN-AM-FM.
1950-2000
In 1957, staff writers William Lambert and Wallace Turner win that year's Pulitzer Prize for Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting, No Edition Time[12]. Their prize cited "their expose of vice and corruption in Portland involving some municipal officials and officers of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Chauffeurs, Warehousemen and Helpers of America, Western Conference" and noted that "they fulfilled their assignments despite great handicaps and the risk of reprisal from lawless elements."[12]
In 1959, a violent five-year strike began November 10, during which union workers published their own daily, The Portland Reporter. Wallace Turner refused to cross picket lines and was hired as West Coast Correspondent for the New York Times.
In 1961 Newhouse bought the Oregon Journal, Portland's afternoon daily newspaper. Production and business operations of the two newspapers were consolidated in The Oregonian's building, while their editorial staffs remained separate. It was shut down after declining advertising revenues in 1989 and "incorporated" into The Oregonian.
As part of a larger corporate plan to exit broadcasting, The Oregonian sold KOIN-TV to newspaper owner Lee Enterprises in 1977. At the same time, KOIN-AM and -FM were sold to Gaylord Broadcasting Co.
S. I. Newhouse eventually died in 1979. He turned over the operation of his company to his sons. S.I. Jr. took on responsibility for the magazines, and Donald took over the newspapers.
The paper established an Asia bureau in Tokyo, Japan in 1989, becoming the first Pacific Northwest newspaper with a foreign correspondent.
In 1992, the Wall Street Journal cited an incident of the The Oregonian recalling its papers in 1989 as an example of how papers soften business coverage to appease advertisers. In the same year, The Oregonian endorsed Bill Clinton during that year's presidential campaign, the first time in its history that it had endorsed a Democrat for president.[13]
1993 saw a busy year for The Oregonian. Robert M. Landauer, then the paper's editorial page editor, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Editorial Writing for "a bold campaign to defuse myths and prejudice promoted by an anti-homosexual constitutional amendment, which was subsequently defeated," according to the Pulitzer judges. It then became the subject of national coverage when the Washington Post broke the story of inappropriate sexual advances which led to the resignation of Oregon senator Bob Packwood four years later. This prompts some to joke, "If it matters to Oregonians, it's in the Washington Post" (a twist on a slogan heard in advertisements for The Oregonian).[14] Finally, Newhouse appointed a new editor for the paper, Sandra Rowe, who relocated from The Virginian-Pilot
1999 was also a busy year. It began when staff writer Richard Read won the Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting, for a series, The French Fry Connection, that illustrated the impact of the Asian economic crisis by profiling the local industry that exports frozen french fries. A coworker of his, staff writer Tom Hallman Jr., was also a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, in Feature Writing, for his "unique profile of a man struggling to recover from a brain injury," according to the Pulitzer judges. The paper won two Overseas Press Club awards, for business and human rights reporting, and then it was ranked by the editors of Columbia Journalism Review as number 12 in the list of "America's Best Newspapers" and the best of the papers owned by the Newhouse family.
