Prussian immigrant Adolph I. Namm (1856–1920) began business in Manhattan but relocated to Brooklyn in 1885. He opened a store on this block in 1891 and expanded as the business grew into one of the largest department stores in the country. The store's curious motto was "Don't sell America short... sell it skirts."
In 1952, Namm's acquired Loeser's department store down the street becoming Namm-Loeser. The store closed in 1957.
