A lone woman braves the cold for a stroll along the Ellicott Creek Trailway, as seen on a dreary afternoon from the Millersport Highway overpass bridge at the far northeastern corner of the North Campus of the University at Buffalo in Amherst, New York. An asphalt multiuse path popular with university students and townies alike, the original 5.2-mile portion of the Trailway - running northwest from North Forest Road through the university campus to Ellicott Creek Park in Tonawanda - was built in 1988 and quickly earned local notoriety as the stomping grounds of the "Bike Path Rapist", aka serial rapist and murderer Altemio Sanchez, two of whose attacks took place there in 1990. A legacy of this dark period are the signs reading "BE SAFE - WALK WITH A FRIEND" which remain placed along the route today. A southward extension of the path, ending at the Audubon Recreation Complex on Amherst Manor Road, added 2.2 miles to the total length when it opened in May 2000.
