Barclays Center is a multi-purpose indoor arena in Brooklyn, New York. It sits partly on a platform over the Metropolitan Transportation Authority–owned Vanderbilt Yards rail yard at Atlantic Avenue. It is part of a proposed $4.9 billion sports arena, business and residential complex known as the Atlantic Yards.
Externally, the arena's basic shape is that of three articulated bands, and features a glass curtain wall covered by a "latticework" made up of 12,000 preweathered steel panels, which are meant to evoke the image of Brooklyn's brownstones. An 117-by-56-foot "Oculus" extends over a section of the plaza outside of the main arena entrance, and contains an irregularly-shaped display screen that loops around on the inside of the structure.
SHoP's involvement with Atlantic Yards began in July 2009 when FCRC asked the firm to cloak a utilitarian scheme for the arena by sports-facilities specialist Ellerbe Becket. SHoP relied heavily on digital tools for the skin's design and fabrication, first using the software Rhinoceros to establish the surface geometry and then CATIA to further develop the form. Working with the firm's affiliate, SHoP Construction, the architects virtually “unfolded” the 12,000 individual panels and exported them to another program that “nested,” or placed, them on 59¼-inch-wide, 3/16-inch-thick steel sheets in a way that would optimize yield.
To produce the patina, the fabricator subjected the CNC-cut and machine-bent panels to a simulated weathering process by misting them with water. The panels were suspended from a conveyor belt, and each was exposed to 12 to 16 wetting-and-drying cycles per day for three and a half months.
The result is a rich coating of rust—one that makes the arena seem surprisingly in sync with the borough's industrial heritage, as though it could already be 100 years old. But even if Barclays feels as though it belongs on its site, like an architectural relic, it can't be declared a civic triumph just yet, since it is only the first component of the much larger project now expected to take 25 years to realize. Not until a few of the planned 14 residential towers are built, including some of the promised 2,250 units of affordable rental housing, and at least a few of the anticipated eight acres of public space are completed, will anyone be able to determine if Atlantic Yards, with the arena as its linchpin, will add to or detract from the streetscape of Brooklyn.

One possible use of the corridor is as part of the Council Creek Regional Trail.

SPERRY 36-INCH NAVY SEARCHLIGHT SERIAL NUMBER 1529
The largest of three standard searchlight sizes used on U.S. Naval ships during World War II.
Since the late 19th century searchlights have been an important multiuse tool for naval crews. They have been used to detect enemy ships, assist landing parties, aid search and rescue, as signaling devices, and to dazzle, or confuse, attacking enemies. Indeed, one of the earliest naval applications of searchlights occurred in 1882 when the Royal Navy used searchlights to dazzle Egyptian gun crews defending Alexandria.
During the Russo-Japanese War, World War I, and World War II searchlights were used to detect, track, and engage enemy ships during nighttime naval battles. In particular, the Japanese Navy developed tactics and training that proved quite effective during nighttime naval engagements early in World War II.
As the war progressed radar emerged as a far more effective way to locate and track enemy ships with the added benefit of not giving a vessel's location away. However, searchlights still proved highly versatile with novel uses being implemented during the Battles of Midway and the Philippine Sea where searchlights were used as nighttime beacons to guide aircrews back to their aircraft carriers. Due to their varied utility, the Navy still installs searchlights on most modern vessels.
The 36-inch searchlight displayed here is a standard navy type, utilizing a carbon arc lamp and a parabolic mirror. Carbon arc lamps work by creating an electric arc between two carbon rods, or electrodes. This arc creates an intense, steady, and highly luminous light which is focused and projected into a narrow beam by the backing parabolic mirror. The diameter of this beam is controlled by an iris shutter. Large searchlights, such as this 36-inch light, could be controlled manually or remotely, and were predominantly used for nighttime combat. They did not have shutters for signaling. Signaling was conducted by smaller 12- and 24-inch general-purpose searchlights.

Outside the AT&T Performing Arts Center Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre
Friday we walked 4400m (2¾miles) roundtrip into The Great Trail suspension bridge over Goldstream River.
For something completely different we walked the Esquimalt & Nanaimo (E&N) railway tracks. This section of rail has been abandoned since it saw its last train pass May 10, 2011. Even though it's been over six years many railfans still haven't got the memo: Trust me, It's abandoned.
We started walking from the E&N Xing at Humpback Rd. We met a couple of locals walking the rails with their dog. This route has no hills and it's 600m shorter one-way. The Great Trail route (recommended) is 2.8km (1¾miles) oneway.
Even on a weekday there's plenty of foot and cycling traffic along the recently-opened trail.

This morning I cycled 17½km (11miles) roundtrip from Oak Bay Bike Shop (OBB) in Westshore Mall to the Wolf Hill rest stop along the Sooke Hills Wilderness Trail (aka The Great Trail). It's 4km from OBB to the trailhead at Mt. Wells Park parking (Humpback Reservoir). It's another 4600m (4.6km) to Wolf Hill rest area (and restrooms) from Humpback Reservoir.
What an amazing ride! I rented an Evo electric-assist (e-bike) bicycle and rode the whole way there and back. The only time I dismounted was on one downhill (DH) section. Going up the steep hills is no problem on an e-bike the the DH on the loose gravel could end up smarting a bit. I didn't want to find out. A couple of DH switchback have signs stating to dismount but these were not as treacherous as the one where I chose to dismount (and which, BTW, had no sign). We already walked this section of trail so knew where the hot spots were.
Once over the suspension bridge northbound, the trail pretty much heads straight up. I timed the climb from my GPS track and it's over seven minutes at 10km/hr. Now that's a hill.
When this trail first opened, it was touted as "a 13km connector" between the Galloping Goose Regional Trail (GGT) in Langford to the Trans Canada Trail at Shawnigan Lake. According to my GPS tracks it's closer to 20km. So for those of us who plan on whipping up there to ride it out and back, we may want to re-think that plan. Unless you're exceptionally fit and can do 40km up hill in a day -- then go for it. There are several access points from Goldstream Heights Road so doing it in increments is an option.
Before I go, let me say what a professional, helpful staff Dan Scott has at Oak Bay Bikes in Westshore Mall. Dan had my ride ready the night before and Misha and Pete got me out the door by 10:30 this morning.

Monday morning I drove the Honda with bike-on-board to Royal Bay.
I was here last Thursday but today with my bike in tow.
It was too windy to put the drone up but it was in my carrier.
Using the Vital Action Video Camera ($99CND) was a good idea.
It's as good as my 12yr-old GoPro except for battery life.
It was nice to be back in the area and the whole place can be covered in 15-minutes on a bike.
Cary Goodman of ODOT Rail took a group of representatives from Washington County and the cities of Forest Grove, Cornelius and Hillsboro on a walking tour of the abandoned Portland & Western railway corridor in Washington County. One possible use of the corridor is as part of the Council Creek Regional Trail.

About the Galloping Goose Regional Trail in Colwood.
The Galloping Goose Regional Trail (GGT) is a picturesque multi-use trail that runs through the heart of Colwood as it follows the old railway line on its 55km journey from Victoria to Sooke.
The trail, which is owned and maintained by the Capital Regional District, attracts thousands of users every day. From March 1, 2024 to March 1, 2025 a total of 270,077 pedestrians and cyclists have passed the automated counter on the Galloping Goose Regional Trail near Wale Road.
The new Colwood Gateway Bridge will allow for a safe, seamless connection that encourages more residents and visitors to travel in and around Colwood on foot or by bike, supporting the City's goals for improved health and well being, easing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and reducing our climate impact.
Bicyclists, hikers, and equestrians may enjoy the numerous lakeside vistas and historic covered bridges along the Row River Trail. This 17-mile paved rails-to-trails route begins in downtown Cottage Grove and ends at Culp Creek, a few miles to the north of the Sharps Creek Recreation Site.
The best access is at the Mosby Creek Trailhead. From I-5 in Cottage Grove take exit 174 and turn east on Row River Road. Follow Row River Road for one mile and turn right on Currin Conn Road, which connects you to Mosby Creek Road. Turn left and follow Mosby Creek Road two miles to Layng Road. Turn left and the trailhead will be immediately on your left. Parking, restrooms, and an informational kiosk are available at the trailhead.
Parking is also available at Dorena Dam, Row Point, Harms Park, and Bake Stewart Park. Click on the brochure to view a map of these locations.
The trail is also part of the recently designated Covered Bridges State Scenic Bikeway.
