A panoramic view of Fez. The green roofed complex on the left hand side is the oldest continuous operating university in the world. Fatima bint Muhammad Al-Fihriya Al-Qurashiya, the daughter of a wealthy merchant founded a school and mosque at this location in 859. It is still operating today as University Al Quaraouiyine.
The wall in the foreground dates from the time of the founding of Fez as his royal capital by Idris I in 789. Fez was the capital of modern Morocco until the time of the French occupation of Morocco in 1912.
