The mud pools and steam vents on the southwest part of Reykjanes close to Reykjanes lighthouse are collectively named Gunnuhver after a female ghost that was laid there. She had caused great disturbance until a priest set a trap for her and she fell into the spring. This happend about 400 years ago.

More hot bubbling mud pools and colourful mineral deposits were found at Krísuvík. Here you can see the steam coming off one.
The Tokaanu Thermal Walk provides a rich experience of thermal activity, from steam blow holes, hot pools to mud pools
After having laughed at this little fella for several minutes because he got stuck in the mudpool, we really wanted to go out there and give him a hand. However, that wasn't possible with all the big ones. We kept to the car and got some major giggles - and he finally made it out by propping himself up on his trunk instead of flailing away with his little legs.

A quick comfort stop, then off in another direction to see the water pots and the volcanic mud pools ... we more or less followed the Sendero Circular.
Mud pool near Wai-O-Tapo Thermal Wonderland, Rotorua; apparently a result of New Zealand's largest mud volcano being eroded by heavy rain.

South of the Krafla area, but not actually within the caldera is Námafjall, a mountain, beneath which is Hverir, a geothermal area with boiling mudpools and steaming fumaroles
White Island Volcano, Bay Of Plenty NZ. The very sulphorous and gassy air meant that a gas mask was required at times to breathe. The air burns the back of your throat slightly. So here is me looking fetching in gas mask and yellow hard hat. (Note to Nic & Lee. sadly there was no Altern-8 gig on the island!)
