AISA-Ied JNUSU : Acievements, Struggles And Solidarities.

Over the past year, the AI SA-led JNUSU meticulously pursued the issues on the Charter of Demands, ensured substantial.

garns in students' rights and facilities. and at the same time. forged links and solidarities with people's struggles against.

draconian laws, big corporales and attacks on campus democracy. We invite the student community to take a look at the.

.

campus level achievements and the course of the JNU student movement over the past year..

Achievements in the Charter of Demands .

Student Representation to AC, BoS: In an agreement with the last JNUSU, the Administration had agreed.

in principle to restore elected representation to the AC and Board ofStudies. .

The present JNUSU took up the issue in right earnest, submitted a detailed proposal regarding the modalities of such 1,.representation to the Namwar Singh Committee, and finally got the recommendations of the Namwar Singh Committeepassed by the AC Meeting of 31 March. The proposal was then ratified by the JNU EC, and sent to the HRD Ministry so thatthe required changes in the Statute could be made. the Ministry approval. .

Punishment to Perpetrators of communal violence: The JNUSU had in its Charter demanded thatpunishmentfor the ABVP's communallumpens who hadindulged in violence atthe visitofSAR Gee/ani to thecampus on August 17 2004. The Harjit Singh Committee set up to enquire into the incident had fallen defunct, and the JNUSU had demanded that it be revived and asked to submit a timebound report. so that the guilty ' could be punished. .

The JNUSU's pressure forced U1e Admin. to reconstitute the Harjit Singh Committee which had fallen defunct. AfterAISA-,.· Ied JNUSU'·,·. .

Extension of MCM Facilities, Increase of MCM amount, and Financial Assistance to Needy Students:In its CharterofDemands, the JNUSU haddemandedscholarships for needyMPhif students, andan increase ·...in the amount ofthe MCM scholarship. .

Due to persistent pursual by the present JNUSU, the MCM amount for BA students has been increased to the level of.

MA students. In the Academic Council Meeting of March 31, the present JNUSU ensured that the MCM was extended to.

MPhii/MTech/MCAstudents. Also, in the recent round ofnegotiations ofJNUSU wjth the VC on 23 and 29 Septem-.

ber, the 'Earn While You Learn' .

posts have been extended from 67 to 90 seats. Now we need to take the struggle.

further to demand further enhancement of MCM to match the mess bill amount, as well as providing other fellowships,.

stipends. assistantships in Project cells to ensure that needy students do not drop out for lack of financial support..

.

Remedial courses: In its Charter. the A/SA-led JNUSU had raised the need to make remedial and bridge.

courses run by JNU more effective by providing more technical expertise to the teachers and offering.

certificates to motivate students to join these courses. .

During negotiations with the JNUSU. the Admin. agreed to issue certificates to students participating in and teaching the.

course. and the Chief Advisor. Equal Opportunity Offtce will explore possibilities of providing technical expertise !n consul-.

tation with teachers to make the remedial and bridge courses effect1ve. .

.

New Exam Centres: A/SA-led JNUSU demanded that new examination centres should be set up in remote.

areas of India espectally in all the capitals of the North-Eastern states ; a/so, in order to promote friendly.

relations with our neighbouring countries, an examination centre be set up in Islamabad in Pakistan..

.

This year 7 new Entrance Exam Centres have been created including Aizawl, Agartala, New Jalpaiguri, GulbargaJ.

Bareilly and one additional centre each in Patna and Delhi. Admmistration also agreed in principle for an exam centre.

in Islamabad subject to Govt. clearance and feasibility. .

.

Railway Reservation Counter and Verification of Railway Concession: Every vacation, students going.

home had to go all the way to the Railway Station to get theirconcession forms verified; and the immense rush.

at the two windows in the rail reservation counter in JNU caused much inconvenience. An extra reservation.

wmdow at the counter in JNU, as well as facilities for verification ofconcession forms in the campus itself,.

were raised by the JNUSU in its CharterofDemands. ,.

The JNUSU President. soon after assuming office 1n November 2004, wrote to the Registrar, taking up the issue. She.

.

followed tt up on a cont1'1uous bas1s both the JNU Registrar as well as with the Chief Commercial Manager {CCM) of.

Northern Ra1lways. Finally. after her meeting with the CCM, Northern Railways on 8 April, an additional counter exclusively.

for students during the holiday rush, and verification of concession forms within the campus itselfbegan during.
