Dreams of the deceased are common after loss and can help one heal. Often, the dreams stem from our yearning for our loved one. During the day, we are busy with different activities, but during sleep, our unconscious mind is more relaxed and open to process the emotions that were unattended to in the day. This is not to say that everyone would have grief dreams since not all are inclined to dream when we sleep.
Research has found most grief dreams to be positive, including those where the deceased appears healthy, comfortable and at peace, or communicates a message of love and gratitude. In some dreams, the loved one may be saying goodbye or following a group of people somewhere. These dreams tend to soothe, comfort and support mourners to cope better.
When we wake up from these dreams, the juxtaposition of not having our loved one with us brings one back to the reality of loss. As such, the essence of reassurance and comfort may weave in the element of death acceptance as a function of the dreams.
Although I have not discussed the possible spiritual transformative nature of grief dreams, you are free to layer it in your own reflection if it is meaningful according to your spiritual inclinations and beliefs.
Most grief dreams are supportive of healing, however, some may experience them to be distressing, in particular, if the death circumstances had been difficult or disturbing. If so, please access counselling support to better process and heal. Otherwise, most grief dreams help us in further meaning construction and coping after loss.

Within every happy moment there is a sad A S P E C T to it. I will be happy that my friend is getting married and sad at the same time because things will change between the two of us. I will be happy thinking of my future possibilities and sad knowing what I will leave behind. I will be happy that my friend is moving away to pursue their dreams and yet be sad that I no longer will see them everyday. Just like happiness, sadness can be overwhelming; today the sadness has caught up with me. I am a boat on the ocean, but today I feel like a ship lost at sea waiting for another tide of happiness to sweep under me. The great thing about life, it won't be long before it does.
