At the foot of Mount Tai is the city of Taian(泰安), which is around 70 minutes bus ride from Jinan(济南). We then took the inner city bus to the starting point of hiking route, those tourism hawkers were as fierce just as their counterparts in West lake.

On the way back we found Taian city's information centre for tourist, it has water tap and free internet!! Dad filled up all the water bottles and I checked the timetable for train to Qingdao from Jinan, CRH(和谐号) serves this route as well, it takes 3 hours.

Interestingly the ladies who were working at the centre all have synchronized poker faces. Is it because they had enough of fellow countrymen's abuse and advantage-taking behavior?? I have no idea.

The thing I am sure is, these kind of well-known tourism spots feed many people. Like even you already paid the ticket to climb Mount Tai, you still have to pay for toilet on the mountain. And there are heaps of vendors along the hiking routes. I don't want to know how they get all the goodies and equipments up there everyday.

As we descend in the cable car from the peak of 泰山 Mount Tai, we see the lower peaks of the mountain sandwiched between 雲 clouds and 霧 fogs. When I grew up seeing these in Chinese paintings I had always thought that they were artists’ interpretations. It turns out it really does look poetic like this in real life. I was stunned beyond words—it was breathtakingly beautiful.

日觀峰 (日观峰 “Sun observation peak” Rì guān fēng) is located at the south east to 玉皇頂 (玉皇顶 Yù huáng dǐng). In ancient times it was called 介丘岩 (Jiè qiū yán) and is famed for its view of the sunrise. The entire 觀日長廊 (观日长廊 “Sun view gallery” Guān rì cháng láng) spans 30 meters in length.

At the northern side of the gallery, there is a 6.5-meter-long boulder named 拱北石 (“North cove rock” Gǒngběi shí). It is considered the best location to view the sunrise. (1. Baidu: 日观峰 / SML Translate)

Red ribbons with locks were seen all over the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple.

Similar sightings were seen in almost every temple I have been to during this trip, so I asked the local what it was about. They told me that Chinese couples visit the temples before they get married, and the locks were used to “bind” their love together forever.

A curved pavement built in stone lead travelers from the peak of 泰山 Mount Tai all the way to the ground. Before the cable cars were built, this was the only way to travel to the top. It still took us an hour on foot from the cable car station to reach the top of the mountain though. To give you a sense of scale, if you zoom in you can see very tiny people walking on the path.

Pano photography is always challenging to crop because often you will need to decide which parts are more interesting and which part can be taken out because the rendered image is often not in rectangular form. As usual, processing the same image in black and white afforded much more room for creative freedom.

The different versions use a different pano distortion adjustment algorithm so dimension varies.

## Color version

+ Adobe Lightroom 4: 7D RAW to 16-bit ProRGB TIF

## Black and white

+ Opened color layered file into Photoshop

+ Adjust Black and White via manual colour filters

+ Apply resulting image with a small amount (~20%) of large-radius USM and set layer to Soft Light (I use this technique a lot to give some “clarity” to the image without over-sharpening things)

+ Import back into Lightroom 4 and use Manual Distortion to “wrap” image further in order to extract more bits in the originally pano’d photo which was in an arch

The 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple is situated at the top of 泰山 Mount Tai. It is a grand building complex which was built using a special combination of metal components, wood, and bricks and stone structures.

In the historic age (though I am unclear when it was actually built), workers must travel on foot to the mountain top. The temple is situated at the tallest peak—the 玉皇頂 Jade Emperor Peak—which is commonly reported as 1,545 metres (5,069 ft) tall, but is described by the PRC government as 1,532.7 metres (5,029 ft).

It is a living monument that anything—no matter how crazy—can be accomplished as long as you have the determination and the will. (1, 2)

Some captures are so challenging to attempt to process in Lightroom I would not even bother to try and I would open it as smart object in Photoshop to process immediately.

The light (sun) is coming directly behind the front gate of the 天街 (“Heavenly Street”), but what I is obviously to show the writing on the gate. In the past it was very challenging because it used to mean having to either do some insane masking (which I generally prefer not to) or letting the sky blow out (which is less ideal but doable). These days H+S (Highlight and Shadow) is the perfect tool for it.

For this particular photo, a fairly heavy handed H+S is applied—see screenshot of particular settings at cl.ly/image/0a081L383e2q I don’t generally recommend pushing tonal width to the max for most photos, but often for extreme cases such as this one it is useful.

Usually if anything is eventually going to print I try to do everything else in Photoshop also but since this one is just intended for Flickr (for now) I imported into Lightroom and tweaked to satisfaction. Mostly I tweaked the sharpening with some heavy masking (hold down “option” to view black+white is a good way to see what you are actually adjusting). Backlit objects usually have fairly severe chromatic aberration so a very heavy-handed chromatic aberration is applied also—normally I don’t do this but like I said, this is an unusual circumstance. Screenshot here: cl.ly/image/3P3F12253L3l Also note in the screenshot that when I work with sky I generally turn on the white point “triangle” so it would show me which areas are blown out. It is easier to work with using Curves in Photoshop so if I eventually decide to print anything I usually rework them but again for Flickr for now it is good enough.

I might eventually turn this into black and white but I did how the clothes that the people are wearing matches the sun glow (yellow) and the cold shadow color (blue) so I picked this capture to process instead of another shot without humans in it.

# About 泰山天街

泰山天街 (“Heavenly Street / Street in the Sky” Tàishān tiān jiē) is a street up on 泰山 (Mount Tai Tàishān) which begins at 南天門 (南天门 “Southern Gate to Heaven” Nán tiānmén) going eastwards and ends at the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple.

The total length is approximately 一華里 (一华里 1 Chinese mile). The northern section of the street is called 北天街 (“Northern Heavenly Street” Běi tiān jiē). Filled with a diversity of businesses and lodging options, it looks like as city as well as a buzzing street up in the sky, making it an fascinating place to visit. (1 / SML Translate)

“鼎香鎖愛情” (鼎香锁爱情 Ding, Incense, Locks and Love)

As previously posted, red ribbons with locks were seen all over the 碧霞祠 Azure Clouds Temple (1). Here at another temple also at 泰山 Mount Tai, the locks were affixed to a 鼎 Ding (2). According to locals, Chinese couples visit temples before they get married. Their names are crapted onto each individual lock and a ritual is performed by the monks to bind their love to eternity.

This is a handheld 6-image pano stitch. The path to the top is really steep and carrying my tripod with me was prohibitively dangerous. Hopefully I will have time in the future to bring an entourage of photo assistants with me. For now this is possible mostly because Photoshop cS6’s pano engine is pretty good these days.

The original text is quoted from Mao Zedong's article, "Serving the People" (为人民服务; September 8, 1944):

"All men must die, but death can vary in its significance. The ancient Chinese writer Szuma Chien said, "Though death befalls all men alike, it may be weightier than Mount Tai or lighter than a feather." To die for the people is weightier than Mount Tai, but to work for the fascists and die for the exploiters and oppressors is lighter than a feather. (人总是要死的,但死的意义有不同。中国古时候有个文学家叫做司马迁的说过:“人固有一死,或重于泰山,或轻于鸿毛。”为人民利益而死,就比泰山还重;替法西斯卖力,替剥削人民和压迫人民的人去死,就比鸿毛还轻。)

MONTE TAI (Cina)

The Temple of the God of Mount Tai, known as the Dai Temple (Dai Miao), is the largest and most complete ancient building complex in the area. It is located at the foot of Mount Tai in the city of Tai'an and covers an area of 96,000 square meters. The temple was first built during the Qin Dynasty. Since the time of the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), its design has been a replica of the imperial palace, which makes it one out of three extant structures in China with the features of an imperial palace (the other two are the Forbidden City and the Confucius Temple in Qufu). The temple has five major halls and many small buildings. The centerpiece is the Palace of Heavenly Blessings (Tian Kuang), built in 1008, during the reign of the last Northern Song Emperor Huizong. The hall houses the mural painting "The God of Mount Tai Making a Journey", dated to the year 1009. The mural extends around the eastern, western and northern walls of the hall and is 3.3 metres high and 62 metres long. The theme of the painting is an inspection tour by the god. Next to the Palace of Heavenly Blessings stand the Yaocan Pavilion and the entrance archway as well as the Bronze Pavilion in the northeast corner. The Dai Temple is surrounded by the 2,100 year-old Han Dynasty cypresses.

The site contains a number of well-preserved steles from the Huizong reign, some of which are mounted on bixi tortoises. There is a much later, Qianlong-era bixi-mounted stele as well.[3]
