Mount Esja volcanic mountain range viewed across Faxa Bay (Faxafloi) from Reykjavik, Iceland

The mountain Esja, often called Esjan, is situated in the south-west of Iceland, about 10 km to the north of Iceland's capital city Reykjavík. Esja is not a single mountain, but a volcanic mountain range, made from basalt and tuff.

So relaxed. The only decision we had to make was "should we do a 100 km round trip for the best lobster soup we ever had?"

Spoiler alert: we didn't

I only saw the aurora once while I was in Iceland, and it was from Reykjavik harbour, just outside the hostel (the light pollution wasn't as kind as it might have been). This shot also encompasses the clouds over Mt Esja, and above them the constellations of Gemini and Auriga.

Sun Voyager sculpture in Raykjavik, Iceland with the Northern Lights & Mount Esja.

We visited Iceland after Christmas. Unfortunately, it rained and was cloudy most of the time. The skies were finally clear our last night so we walked to Shore Walk and Fiskislóð and saw them a bit. I then went out very late (or is 2am very early?) to try capture a shot of Sun Voyager. Fortunately, the slim band we saw earlier was in a good spot with the sculpture. The sculpture is right next to a bright road so I only saw Mount Esja & the aurora on the LCD. I brightened both of them in post and sharpened the stars big-time since it was so clear. Need to visit Iceland again sometime (I'm thinking a self-drive photo trip in October? Thoughts on that idea anyone?). We did visit many great sites and I'm happy to have a keeper of Sun Voyager.

The Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite takes us over the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. As a volcanic island famous for its volcanoes, glaciers, lakes, lava and hot springs, Iceland attracts tourists all year round with its vast array of natural wonders.

This true colour image shows us the small city of Reykjavik, home to around 120 000 people, and seen in the lower central part of the image. The port town of Akranes, 20 km north of the capital, is also shown in grey in the centre of the image. In between the two lies Mount Esja, standing just over 900 m tall, and providing a dramatic backdrop to the capital.

In the upper left part of the image, ‘kettle holes’ are visible as small dark green dots scattered across the reddish brown area. Kettle holes are formed when blocks of ice break away from glaciers and then become buried in outwash. When these buried blocks of glacier ice melt away they leave behind holes, which become filled with water and turn into kettle hole lakes. They are often found in areas that were covered in ice during the last ice age, which ended around 12 000 years ago. Kettle holes are common in Michigan in the United States, as well as in parts of Germany, Austria and the UK.

The Sentinel-2 mission is tasked with monitoring our changing lands. Designed specifically to monitor vegetation, it can also detect differences in sparsely vegetated areas, as well as the mineral composition of soil, as found in Iceland.

This image, which was captured on 1 November 2017, is also featured on the Earth from Space video programme.

Dozens of small stone cairns, traditionally known as vörður, line the rugged volcanic shoreline along Sæbraut road in Reykjavík. The frame looks out across the tranquil, glacial waters of Faxaflói Bay toward the snow-dusted ridges of Mount Esja rising along the horizon. These stacked basalt rocks serve as a modern nod to Iceland's ancient trail markers, providing a beautiful geometric foreground against the subarctic coastal landscape.

Another telephoto shot I took from the top of Hallgrimskirkja in Reykjavik.

Sorry all my uploads have for so long all been of Iceland. I have been unable to take a single photo since coming back from Iceland last month. I was out yet again today with my camera, and yet again returned without a single shot. I blame the dismal lighting of the Scottish winters! :-(

I know this is cliched and cheesy, but I quite like it none the less...

The shore around by the Harpa concert hall was filled with these rock stacks made by tourists. We clambered over the rocks one morning to take photos as the sun was coming up. A cold but lovely morning.

Reykjavik - Iceland

A monochrome study in textures along the rugged, volcanic coastline of Faxaflói Bay, Iceland. Beneath a heavy canopy of metallic clouds, the stark, snow-dusted veins of Mount Esja stand in sharp contrast to the dark ripples of the North Atlantic. This ancient basalt shoreline was carved by retreating glaciers over two million years ago during the Pleistocene Ice Age. Along the modern shore, thousands of hand-stacked stone cairns—a traditional Icelandic navigation aid updated by contemporary travelers—rise up like a quiet, frozen crowd, linking the deep geological past with the fleeting present.
