Bereits das erste Motorrad von BMW, die R 32, hatte mit Zweizylinder-Boxermotor und Kardanantrieb, eine für BMW lange Zeit typische Bauweise, die bis heute neben anderen fortgeführt wird. Im Zweiten Weltkrieg wurden von BMW besonders Wehrmachtsgespanne gefertigt, so in Eisenach.

The very first motorcycle from BMW, the R 32, had a two-cylinder boxer engine and cardan drive, a design that was typical of BMW for a long time and which is continued to this day along with others. During the Second World War, BMW made special Wehrmacht sidecars, for example in Eisenach.
