After a 10 hour drive it's not difficult to be motivated to get the camera out when you reach Assynt. The colours, the Birches, the mountains. All so characteristic of this magical area. This was early evening on the way to Lochinver.

This image was taken on the deck of a long, light and narrow Norse Viking Longship, standing looking down from the prow to the stern on the side opposite to the steering oar. In Scandinavian boat-building tradition the ship is 32ft, single masted, with 5 pairs of oars and a shallow-draft hull designed for speed, made of overlapping planks of larch and oak with each rib scarfed together using caulking and iron rivets.
One of the most popular Norse heroes among the Vikings and a larger than life character was Ragnar Lodbrok, a legendary Viking commander who became a scourge of England and France, using boats like these to travel across the sea and up rivers. If like me you were captivated by the History Channel's Viking series and the stories of Ragnar, Lagertha, Floki and Rollo, this was one of the ships used when filming.
I was lucky enough to be able to take this shot yesterday when the boat was rowed into Gloucester basin. Its called the Bear and its owned by Regia Anglorum. For over a quarter of a century, Regia Anglorum has been re-creating history for audiences around the world. They have skilled, properly equipped and highly motivated men and women of all ages who bring the dull and dead past back to brilliant life, celebrating the very best of life in the round a thousand years ago! They also have a fleet of seven full-scale ship replicas and a secluded permanent site with a reconstruction of an old mead hall. The best re-enactment society in the world – probably...see regia.org for more information.

"Van Down By The River" by John Ludwig
I'm not a loser but I lost my job
Lost my oldest t-shirt and my Daddy's watching Bob
Lost my Christmas gift card to the Best Buy
I lost almost everything but the ability to cry
I lost that great big bottle of Jack Black
Maybe I didn't lose it, I found an empty out back
I suppose you could say I lost my way a time or two
But now here solely to motivate you
Thank you to all my flickr friends for their loyalty and especially their motivating comments and favs throughout the year.

We are a Saturday.
Motivated by a photographic exhibition at the Abbey of Jumièges.
Dieppe the road is long but beautiful once we reached the Seine.
On its outskirts of chalky cliffs, villages and single houses and so Norman.
Here a series of photos taken over and only with my mobile Sony z2, full frame
Between the beauty of the place and incredible peace that prevails,
I kept the initial format of each of my photos in the state,
but to accentuate the texturing "sculpted paintings"
as were those felt during my journey of initiation in these places.
Of course she was motivating me to stay home and give her cheese instead of going for a bike ride… but still motivating me.
A Honey Bee focused on working the flowers. The only processing here is reducing the saturation for this effect.

Ahh so many amazing things happened during the last days and one of them was getting featured on My Modern Met! That was such a huge surprise and I feel really honoured.
A huge thank you goes to everybody on Flickr. Because without you, this would have never happened. Flickr was and still is the main reason why I keep taking photos and what motivates me to learn new things and to improve my skills. I'm thankful you're all here and I really hope the "new Flickr" won't influence this amazing community.
I am really excited about sharing this photo, I worked for so many hours on it. It makes me miss California. I shot the landscape last year when I was in San Francisco area and I never realized until now how perfect it was. This is why I just had to use it for a photo and there are so many beautiful memories connected with this photo. This is far from what everything looked like in reality, but I wanted to show what it felt like. Absolutely magical. Like a dream.

Today was one of those lazy days when it comes to photography, I kept putting off picking up the camera and finally as the light was starting to sink I figured I'd better get moving.
What better for a day of procrastinating than a photo of a motivator... that and I was a little stumped on inspiration and coffee is always a good model!
Anyway hope everyone has had a good day, and a Happy Independence Day to all my American friends!

Adrienne froze, her breath catching. “You mean “us” is just us… only you and me? We’re the only jumpers left... and we’re supposed to save the planet?”
“Shhh, keep your voice down,” Kayla murmured, taking a gulp of wine. “For weeks, it was just me. But now you’re here—so things are finally looking up.”
She set her glass down and leaned in. “There are other jumpers, but they exist in the past, where they’re needed. I was part of a team—three of us were chosen to come here. We didn’t realize how much the reptiles had advanced. They’re sharper, deadlier. They’ve developed weapons like the disruptor, something they never had before. They can interfere with our VDDs, though they still can’t use them to jump.”
She hesitated, then lowered her voice further. “I think... somehow, they’ve mixed their DNA with humans.”
Adrienne’s heart pounded.
Kayla’s expression darkened as she continued, “They sensed my team almost immediately. They found Kara first—my sister. They caught her but killed her before they could get her to help them. Aria was next, four days later. And they nearly had you.”
Adrienne reached over, gripping Kayla’s hand. “I’m so sorry,” she whispered, pulling her into a hug.
Across the room, the waiter lingered near the entrance, chatting with a man in a gray suit. Kayla stiffened as they cast several glances their way. Then, without warning, the man in grey pivoted, slipping out of sight. The waiter turned and looked back over his shoulder at the girls before walking away.
Something was wrong.
“We’re done here,” Kayla said, standing abruptly. “It’s dangerous to stay in one place for too long. I have a place where they can’t reach us.”
She placed cash on the table, seized Adrienne’s hand—and they slipped out a side entrance into the alley.
Mere seconds later, the man in the gray suit reappeared with the waiter and another man, clad in a black suit.
They walked up to the empty booth, scanning the space where the two had just been.
They had missed the girls. But barely.

*Working Towards a Better World
Appreciation is a wonderful thing: It makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well. -
Voltaire
The more one does and sees and feels, the more one is able to do, and the more genuine may be one's appreciation of fundamental things like home, and love, and understanding companionship. - Amelia Earhart
The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page. - Saint Augustine
Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.
Mary Ritter Beard
A good traveler has no fixed plans, and is not intent on arriving. - Lao Tzu
I've always enjoyed traveling and having experience with different cultures and different people. But it's also a wonderful thing to be able to benefit and enable research, not only in our country but around the world. -
Laurel Clark
I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move.
Robert Louis Stevenson
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page. - St. Augustine
The use of traveling is to regulate imagination by reality, and instead of thinking how things may be, to see them as they are. - Samuel Johnson
We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open. - Jawaharial Nehru
Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends. -
Maya Angelou
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. - Mark Jenkins
Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo❤️

10 million visits in my photostream with countless motivating comments
I first posted this the day after Donald Trump was elected. I titled it the sa.e here as the 1st time because I believe DJT and his presidency brought remarkable darkness on this country. His racism and celebration of rape and sexual predatory behavior and countless unspeakable horrendous mistreatment of people are things no person has any reasonable justification for dismissing or ignoring, or, accepting. Today, insurrection happened just before an already dysfunctional congress was prevented from doing its job and finalize the approval of the electoral college's recognition of Joe Biden's election as President of The United States.
So, the dark shadow continues to stretch across this country. Today, in ways that far too many people are surprised or shocked by. DJT announced his candidacy prior to election with the vile racism that has been part of his every action as president. Today, he encouraged and motivated badly confused and conspiratorial people to go to the capital and do what they did. He carries responsibility for what has happened today and needs to be held legally responsible for his actions.
Once again, I failed to motivate myself to get out and take some pics. Soon though, I will have to as, these are the last remaining orchids from the latest flowering that started in June.
I spent some time this past summer trying to learn how better to secure images of pollinators of all kinds. That project was motivated by my sunrise walks down an abandoned road southeast of Ottawa, where overgrown wildflowers grew in thick and deep bunches on the sides of the road, and where butterflies and moths and bees and wasps spent the first light re-energizing for the new day.
The subjects of the photographs had a lot more freedom to drift away from the road to the wild meadows than I had - old fences and thick vegetation kept me pretty hemmed in. That meant having to get creative in most cases, which was part of learning how to manage the situation. I really liked this image, shot through a wall of vegetation to find the Skipper - not an especially exotic one for people who know these creatures - who was drinking from the wildflower.
This activity and the many early mornings it entailed was a response to the impact of the pandemic on birding and bird photography. Most of my usual places had not adjusted particularly well to the changed circumstances, and so the solitary mornings were just what the public health officials ordered.
I really hope everyone is safe and has a great holiday break. I now know people (healthcare workers) who are scheduled to be vaccinated shortly in Ottawa so things are slowly moving forward - please take care.
And many sincere thanks to the people who look at, like and/or comment on my images. I really appreciate the connection. I spend a lot of my free time looking at and learning from others, but this is an amazing community, and it offers a lot to me in different ways - especially with the superb images people are posting. So: many thanks, and stay safe.
I MADE IT. Wow. I can't believe it's been a year. On July 1, 2013 I thought that a 52 weeks project would be a cool way to motivate myself to shoot and upload more often. I learned that I am awful at uploading on time, but ,my commitment never wavered and I have grown so much. This project has helped to turn photography from my hobby into my passion.
