what i was singing...

why yes, i frequently stop to serenade cows. i thought everyone did...?

So why'd you fill my sorrows

With the words you've borrowed

From the only place you've known

And why'd ya sing 'allelujah

If it means nothing to you

Why'd you sing with me at all?

large

oh, and there are two calves in front of the brown cow, both laying down in the grass. you can glimpse the second one a bit better in the large size. i mention this only to give you some idea of how thick the grass actually was...

Thank you one and all, for helping this climb to the lofty height of #24 on Explorer, and even now where it sits on the comfortable chair 31 =)

Deutschland / Hessen - Reinhardswald

Tinder fungus

Zunderschwamm

The Reinhardswald is a range of hills up to 472.2 m above sea level (NN) and covering an area of over 200 km² in the Weser Uplands in the district of Kassel, Hesse (Germany). Of this, 183 km² are part of the unincorporated area known as Gutsbezirk Reinhardswald.

The area is known for its myths and legends, such as Grimms' Fairy Tales, and the "Sleeping Beauty" castle of Sababurg is internationally known.

Fomes fomentarius (commonly known as the tinder fungus, false tinder fungus, hoof fungus, tinder conk, tinder polypore or ice man fungus) is a species of fungal plant pathogen found in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. The species produces very large polypore fruit bodies which are shaped like a horse's hoof and vary in colour from a silvery grey to almost black, though they are normally brown. It grows on the side of various species of tree, which it infects through broken bark, causing rot. The species typically continues to live on trees long after they have died, changing from a parasite to a decomposer.

Though inedible, F. fomentarius has traditionally seen use as the main ingredient of amadou, a material used primarily as tinder, but also used to make clothing and other items. The 5,000-year-old Ötzi the Iceman carried four pieces of F. fomentarius, concluded to be for use as tinder. It also has medicinal and other uses. The species is both a pest and useful in timber production.

Moos, Moos, Moos

A shot from the same set as moo and stand

Thanks for visiting everyone, i'm not sure about it's technical merits, but i like a picture that has a bit of an unanswered question, and a bit of strangeness, as soon as i saw this lined up i knew it had both.

The figure is higher than the cow which messes with the perspective and the backlight distorts the shape of the silhouette, the cows were all pretty chilled that day, but this one seemed to have something to say, wish i knew what (it could've just been asking me to go away :)

As for the figure, i thought the body language (folded arms) was great too, hence the 'moody' title :)

The town had a channel going through it with nice houses alongside it.

ohne moos, nichts los

I knew those Altoids tins would finally come in handy one day...

An Altoids chewing gum tin is just about the perfect shape for carrying your brand new Moo MiniCards. It will hold about 30 cards comfortably. There is a bit of extra space, as you can see, but just enough so that there shouldn't be any damage when the case gets a bit jostled in your pocket...

(EDIT: #14 on Explore for October 3... some people must dig this.)

today is my father's birthday. i baked him a cake.

yes, a cow cake. see, he lives his life in a cloud of depression. (i've written about him before, with ghost, war story and we the living.) the most i can do is try and blow some of the fog away for brief respites here and there, by making him laugh. and cows have always made him laugh. when i was a kid, he gave me all his far side books (remember the small horizontal ones?). i still have them.

so this year, for his 63rd birthday, we got him the entire far side collection (two huge clothbound volumes) and a toy cow pillow. and i baked him this cake.

after dinner, as we were cleaning up, he noticed this photo on the shelf. he picked it up and held it, and stared at it. after a long moment he said to me, "where did the time go?" i didn't say anything. i just put down the pile of napkins, went over to him, threw my arms around his shoulders and whispered, "happy birthday, pops."

moo.

This is for my brother's birthday, he likes cows, so only naturally a "Moo-shroom" was in order :)
