« Inscrite au répertoire Grand site national », la bastide de Monpazier fait également partie de l’association des « Plus beaux villages de France ». Notons que son nom apparaît au XIIIème siècle sous la forme latine de « Castrum Montis Pazerii », ce qui signifie « mont de la paix ». Traduit en occitan, il se compose de Mont (issu du latin mons, montis) et de Pazier, un dérivé de patz (qui provient, comme le français paix, du latin pax).

Este maravilloso pueblo perigurdino es una antigua bastida (ver www.flickr.com/photos/18186142@N05/2552416624/ sobre el movimiento medieval de ocupación de tierras). Está clasificado como une de “los pueblos más bellos de Francia” y forma parte del repertorio de los “grandes sitios nacionales franceses”. Derivado del latín “Castro montis pazerii”, su nombre quiere decir “monte de la paz”.

Monpazier ligt in de mooie streek tussen de Dordogne en de Lot en is de mooiste bastide dorpen in de Périgord. Een blik op de plattegrond van het dorp doet helemaal niet denken aan een middeleeuws dorp. Waar je organische opgebouwde nederzetting verwacht met nauwe straatjes en kronkelige steegjes heersen in Monpazier strakke lijnen en uniformiteit die meer doen denken aan een Romeinse legerplaats. Eigenaardig is ook dat het dorp helemaal niet door Fransen is gesticht maar door een Engelse koning.
Monpazier is a 13th-century bastide town begun in 1285, founded and built by King Edward I of England, who was also Duke of Gascony. It was home to Eleanor of Aquitaine and Richard II of England for a time. Nearby is the Château du Biron and the Dordogne River.
The parish church of Monpazier is St. Dominique, built from the 13th through the 16th centuries.
