This stand was built from a standard IKEA shelf and some little legs (originally meant for bookshelves or TV stands, I think).

Combined native range of all the monitor lizards

Skulls of various varanoids

Monitor lizards are lizards in the genus Varanus, the only extant genus in the family Varanidae. They are native to Africa, Asia, and Oceania, and one species is also found in the Americas as an invasive species. About 80 species are recognized.

Monitor lizards have long necks, powerful tails and claws, and well-developed limbs. The adult length of extant species ranges from 20 cm (7.9 in) in some species, to over 3 m (10 ft) in the case of the Komodo dragon, though the extinct varanid known as megalania (Varanus priscus) may have been capable of reaching lengths more than 7 m (23 ft). Most monitor species are terrestrial, but arboreal and semiaquatic monitors are also known. While most monitor lizards are carnivorous, eating eggs, smaller reptiles, fish, birds, insects, and small mammals, some also eat fruit and vegetation, depending on where they live.

A very nice picture of the 15" monitor H.M.S. Roberts.

I trod the decks of this vessel in the mid fifties when she was lying alongside the Vanguard at Portsmouth.

It is interesting that these ships were able to 'flood down' to deck level and sit on the sea bed. This provided for a more stable gun platform and also reduced their own 'target profile' against counter fire.

This very nice picture is the property of Captain Rex Cooper, OBE, and is shown here by his kind permission.

For the last 25 years, Comcast (and Chicago Cable TV before them) were a monthly expense. Not huge, but an expense.

Then, they got greedy. For the last five years, I've been steadily cutting back service, but the price would creep right back up again. On my last monthly bill, I paid $91.00 for basic cable, only 7 dollars less than what I was paying for Digital Preferred with HBO, Showtime, and the printed cable guide at the beginning of 2008. They even started charging me $2.00 apiece per month for their two supplied analog converters!

Funny thing. The last few years, there were never any deals or discounts when I would call to check. When I called this morning to cancel, suddenly the 6-month discount packages came out of the woodwork. "We don't tell everyone about these." Well, why not? Put them on the damn rate sheet! Let customers compare!

Long story short: I cancelled anyway. And the digital-analog converter I bought works just fine, and will pay for itself in a little over a year. Tom Skilling pointing at winter storms is as sharp and clear as he was on cable. And once again, watching TV costs what it cost for the first 31 years of my life, which was -- nothing.

If Comcast has enough money to buy NBC, they'll do just fine without me. And for Lent, except for the 5:30 and 10:00 news, I can do just fine without being glued to the tube. (I'll make a big exception for the Daytona 500. A man's gotta have his motorsports. Yee-haw.)
