According to legends, St. Corona was an early Christian martyr. She is considered the patron saint of butchers (I don't know why), treasure hunters, lottery players, and generally in money matters (probably because her name is reminiscent of various currency such as Krone or Crown). Since animal epidemics often cause enormous monetary losses, she has long been considered regionally also as a patron saint against such misfortune. Hence, for current reasons, it was not far in folk Catholicism to see in her also a patron saint against human epidemics and pandemics.
