The Alahan Monastery, Koja Kalessi, is a one hour walking distance from the village of GeƧimli, located in the province of Mersin, Turkey. The site is being considered to be put on the World Heritage list of sites who have "outstanding universal value" to the world.

The Christian monastery at Alahan is located in the mountains of Isauria in Southern Asia Minor near Mut on the road between Karaman and Silifke. Residing at an altitude of 4,000ft, it stands 3,000 ft over the Calycadnus valley. Construction started during the second half of the fifth century under Emperor Leo I and was finished by Emperor Zeno, yet by the seventh century it was abandoned. Its remains include two churches, one (The East Church) is extremely well preserved, a baptistery, a colonnaded runway running the full length of the site, and a couple of subsidiary buildings, plus some old caves and graves. The complex may be funded by Emperor Zeno (474-491), who was from the region. The buildings stretches along the side of the mountain and covers an area of 30x200 meters. It is quite possible that the monastery official, and monks lived in the houses surrounding the complex. The monastery stands as the finest achievement of native Isaurian stonemasons and sculptors. Alahan is a key site in the history of early Byzantine architecture, half a century before the great achievements of Anicia Juliana and Justinian in Constantinople.

In 2012, Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Mersin Governorship started restoration work on the site because of its history and heritage.

The Passionist Fathers Monastery at 5700 North Harlem Avenue, designed by Chicago architect Joseph Molitor and completed in 1910, is locally significant under National Register Criterion C for architecture as a fine example of an early twentieth century monastery with Classical, Baroque, and Romanesque-style detailing, and as one of the largest and most prominent religious structures in the Chicago community of Norwood Park. The overall design and craftsmanship of the monastery is reflected in the intricate stone and brick detailing seen throughout the building. The Classical elements at the base of the building , including the monumental stone entrance surround, rusticated water table and substantial stringcourse, are complimented by the Baroque-style gable above the main entrance and the row of round arched windows that give the impression of an arcade along the third story. These stylistic and architectural features are indicative of the work of Chicago architect Joseph Molitor, who was a prolific designer of ecclesiastical buildings throughout the city.

Kintsvisi Monastery (Georgian: įƒ§įƒ˜įƒœįƒ¬įƒ•įƒ˜įƒ”įƒ˜, Qinc'visi) is a Georgian Orthodox monastery in the Shida Kartli region, eastern Georgia, 10 kilometers from the town Kareli, on a forested slope of a high mountain of the Dzama valley.

The Kintsvisi Monastery complex consists of three churches, of uncertain origin. The central (main) central church dedicated to St Nicholas is thought to date to the early 13th century, in what is generally regarded as a "golden age" of the Georgian monarchy. A very small chapel standing next to it is dedicated to St George, and dates from around the same time.

The oldest church, dedicated to St Mary dates from the 10-11th centuries, but is mostly in ruins.

The site is currently listed by the World Monuments Fund as a field project.

A Hindu Monastery in the middle of paradise ! The grounds are gorgeous - with waterfalls, flowers, and beautiful views. The new temple is being hand constructed from white granite, which is quarried and hand carved in a village in India. . After the stone arrives in Kauai, the carving is completed. The only tools used are hammers and chisels.

Greek Orthodox Monastery of the Temptation. We have never visited this ancient and famous monastery although we believe others have!!! Dates back to the 12th century and is accessibly by cable-car. Said to be built near the site where the Devil tried to tempt Jesus away from his 40-day fast in the desert. Situated near Jericho.

This is the holiest place in Bulgaria. The monastery was founded by the hermit St. Ivan of Rila in 9th century AD.

Phuktal Monastery or Phuktal Gompa (often transliterated as Phugtal) is a Buddhist monastery located in the remote Lungnak Valley in south-eastern Zanskar, in the Himalayan region of Ladakh, in Northern India. It is one of the only Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh that can still be reached only by foot. Supplies to the monastery are brought on horses, donkeys, and mules in the warmer months, and in the frozen winters, they are transported through the frozen Zanskar River. A road is expected to be built up to the monastery, however, for now, it is a day's walk from Village Cha or Village Khangsaar, the end of the road leading from Padum.

One of the highlights of my visit to the monastery was listening to this all-male choir under the direction of Fr. Martin, who has also composed much of the music that is sung here. The music ranges from unison to a very rich four-part harmony.
