"I like the monastic life... in the prayer and the praising... this has charged me with new energy, spiritual energy. This is very important for my ministry outside the monastery."

Pope Theodoros II

Construction began during the reign of Alexander Ypsilanti (1774–1782) and was completed by Prince Nicholas Mavrogenes (1786–1790) during the Phanariote age also called the Greek origin government of Wallachia. It was built in neoclassical style, and was considered very large for that time: 43 meters long and 18 high, with walls 1 and 2 meters thick. The structure was completed under the rule of Mavrogenes between April 1786 and September 1790.

December 28, 2018 - After a forty minute hike experiencing breathtaking views above the city of Petra and the Wadi Musa Valley the Ad-Deir (Monastery) was the highlight of my day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site. I would encourage anyone capable of the hike which includes over 800 steps to see this monument of Nabatean architecture.

The term monastery is a misnomer Ad-Deir (which means monastery in Arabic) when in fact was built as a temple dedicated to Nabatean King Obodas I.

Baroque monastery complex of the Premonstratesians in the village of Jasov, eastern Slovakia.

I was stunned to see such a big and well-maintained monastery at such a remote place, where it used to take at least four days of trek to reach even a few years back, with just a small village having hardly fifty households.

Yes, Lingshed monastery is one of the oldest remote monasteries in Zanskar valley. It was established in the 15th century around the same time when Kasrsha and Padum monstaries were also established in Zanskar, a region of Ladakh, which still lies cuf off from the mainland in winter due to unbearably low temperature,

The new monstery has replaced the old cave monasteries.

Day 2 of @rebellug Vignweek build, this one took me awhile to settle on an idea/concept. And finally settled on something close to my heart that seemed fun to build. I spent way too long figuring out the floor pattern as per usual ... and I thought cube city was annoying...

I also found a fun 'Eli style castle greeble' to fill out the arch windows for a more monastery vibe - pretty happy I figured something out.

I have a bunch more Vignweek entries coming up ... just wanted to take some time and clean and tweak some of the other builds.

Another view of Kye monastery with the village in the foreground. In this photo you can see that the monastery is not as isolated as it looks in my earlier photos of it.

I will be going to Chandigarh on some work and will be off Flickr for some time my friends.See you all next week.

Metéora* monastery, Greece

UNESCO World heritage Site

The Metéora (Greek: Μετέωρα, "suspended rocks", "suspended in the air" or "in the heavens above") is one of the largest and most important complex of monasteries in Greece, second only to Mount Athos.[1] The monasteries are built on natural sandstone rock pillars, at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Peneios river and Pindus Mountains, in central Greece. The Metéora is home to six monasteries and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Metéora's criteria [2] for the UNESCO World Heritage Site is I, II, IV, V and VII. [3]

Revisiting a shot from two years ago - this time with softer tones, the square format of which I'm now so enamoured, and in wallpapers of various sizes. This table-top garden is in a courtyard of the old Dhankar buddhist monastery in a dusty, dry corner of north-eastern India.

The Monastery is quite large, roughly double the size of the Treasury. It's quite a challenge to get up to the Monastery, and then to climb higher to get the overview shot that shows how the Monastery blends into the hills. That higher perch gives you a 360-degree panorama, which is well worth the climb on a clear day.
