The Red-bellied Grackle is a distinctive rare blackbird of cloud forest in the Colombian Andes. It is large, long-tailed, and heavy-billed with a bright red belly and otherwise glossy black plumage. Red-bellied Grackles moves through the forest in groups, giving a variety of calls. While it has been recorded from all three ranges of the Andes in Colombia, contemporary localities are few.

Turdus ignobilis (Black-billed Thrush / Mayo)
Turdus ignobilis is a widely distributed thrush species throughout northern South America and the Amazon, inhabiting a diverse set of habitats ranging from floodplain forests, white sand “campinas”, to highland forests (Andes and Tepuis). There are currently six known subspecies of T. ignobilis, which vary extensively phenotypically and also ecologically.
Observe the lower belly of this toucan, with its disordered plumage. This is a mom who has been lying in the nest a lot. La Ceja, Colombia; 2.300 meters above sea level.

Like other toucans, the Andean Toucanet is brightly marked and has a large bill. The adult is 30–35 cm (12–14 in) long. The sexes are alike in appearance, although the female generally is smaller and slightly shorter-billed.
The Andean Toucanet is a generally common in humid forest and woodland, mainly at higher elevations.

This picture represents and interesting event in this chick’s life history. Up to this point, at least during the time I was lucky enough to be watching, the most Junior would do was peck at his food. He relied upon Mom to tear up the prey and feed it to him. They demonstrated a very close bond, lots of Mom preening her pride and joy and sometimes Junior preening Mom. This shot was taken close to sunset. Mom took the foot shown in her beak, a body part Junior in the past seemed to relish, and flew to a nearby branch. From there she made a call I hadn’t heard before. It was explained to me by Karen, a woman also watching, that Mom was attempting to entice Junior to make the short flight from the nest branch to where she was perched with the tasty tidbit. I hadn’t seen the chick attempt to fly but his feathers had grown in a lot and it would not have surprised me to see a short flight. Unfortunately, I can’t get back to the nest until after Junior will have fled the coup but hope he or she has a bright future and will not move too far from the neighborhood. (Bubo virginianus). Recently, at dusk, a mother moose and this year's calf returned to our area. It was 50 weeks ago when we saw an identical pair eating the wild shrubs in this exact spot. I'm assuming it's the same adult since they are loners (except when parenting) and territorial.
"Moose" comes from the Algonquin word for “eater of twigs.” They forage across a 5+ mile (13km) territory, rutting in the Fall, and then the bulls leave. She will drive off the 1-year-old calf to another area when it's time to have next year's mid-Spring new calf. This youngster is probably around 7 months old.

Goats seen in the neolitic settlement. It was nice to see live animals there :)
Neolithic settlement in Kopiec is a small settlement in village Kopiec, when you can see how lived people of the Funnelbeaker culture (present in Europe between 3700 and 1900 BC), recreated with great accuracy. The huts are equipped with vessels and various objects which were made using old techniques. The whole was made in accordance with current knowledge about the life of people from that period. In the settlement live also farm animals, and in the gardens you can see species of cereals being cultivated in old times.

W osadzie znajdują się też zwierzęta hodowlane, zaś w ogródkach można zobaczyć uprawiane pradawne gatunki zbóż.

My mother wanted to see Italy "one more time," so we went for two weeks in October. (She will be 101 years old on January 1.) The weather was perfect—in the 70s and only one day of rain. She has a Fitbit and some days she took over 12,000 steps, climbing staircases in Vatican City as if she were part mountain goat. Here she is in one of her favorite cities, Florence.
We typically go to Rocky Mountain National Park in the fall. The fall colors are spectacular, and the elk rut is amazing to witness. While that is still on the agenda for September, we decided to go in the Spring to look for baby critters. I asked the park ranger at the entrance station if there were any babies around. She did not believe so thinking it was still too early. Happily, she was mistaken, and we saw lots of little ones.
On this particular morning, this elk cow and calf were in a stand of aspen and were slowly on the move with a few other calf-less cows. I got ahead of them, thinking they were going to walk into a clearing, but the small herd decided to go in the opposite direction. The herd slowly crossed the road and I doubled back, placing myself in a position to get them as they went up a ridge. As I watched them move on, the mother and calf were nowhere to be seen. I continued to wait, and after about five minutes or so, mom and calf crossed over as well and went up the ridge following the others. A beautiful morning, a tender moment in nature – does it get any better?

Today a celebration. The whole herd, some 20 mountain goats, have finally found their way to our side of the mountain in time for some winter shots. They were all pretty intent on festive feeding this afternoon and I was glad to be close enough to follow them.
They did dine in family units. Occasional disputes arose when the little guys wandered into a male's space from another unit.

This future Mom-to-be is gathering "local" materials for a new nest at Lake Balboa. A number of Sparrows have made nests in the eaves of the "local" Restroom, so toilet tissue is readily available for nest building !!

October 18th, 2007 my Mom would have turned 80.
I miss her terribly and so does my Dad, family and friends.
