Aka......Mixing molecule's. Water and light.

Unintuitive as it may seem, this tessellated Christmas Tree was born as a modification of a shooting star model, Epiphany III (pics coming up). The molecule used for creating the jagged edges of the tree can probably also be combined in other ways to create new shapes. The star at the top is based on the Lucky Star Molecule.

I used this model for testing out Vintage paper. At 65 gsm, it’s rated thinner than most papers I use, and it did feel thinner indeed. The paper comes in multiple colors, all from a slightly pale, washed-out palette. While precreasing, I had the feeling that the paper stretched a little, causing the grid lines to not be aligned as precisely as I wanted. Despite the thinness, there was a considerable difference in resistance when folding with and against the grain. The collapse of the star went smoothly despite the molecule’s small size, and the main collapse (much simpler) went fine as well. There was no problem with neatly squashing the pleats on the back side. Also, 3D shaping of the tree went on without any issues. Overall, I think this is a fine paper, although it’s probably a risky choice for models with large grids or where perfect precision is required. I haven’t tried folding a large sheet, but I think this could be a bit of a problem as well due to the grid lines drifting off to the sides. On the other hand, the paper is thinner than Tant and collapsed quite well, so for small models where paper thickness plays a larger role and there is no much space for the grid to drift, it’s a good choice. The texture and the trademark dull colors are also an interesting alternative to the more colorful papers.

This is a tessellation of the Lucky Star Fractal. The standalone star was designed independently by several people, starting with Shuzo Fujimoto. I don’t know if Fujimoto considered tesselating this design but I wouldn’t be surprised if he did. Independently, Halina Rościszewska-Narloch (Haligami), designed her Day and Night Tessellation which is practically the same as this model folded up to stage one, though she also experimented with creating the fractalized version. You can see my fold of the non-fractal version of the tessellation at https://flic.kr/p/2f1B6dv. Finally, I prepared a phototutorial of folding the standalone Lucky Star Fractal at https://flic.kr/p/2dDpuWS.

I folded this model from a sheet of grey Tant paper which I bought at the CDO convention in Italy. I use Tant paper a lot so I was happy to finally get some really large sheets. Unfortunately, I soon noticed that something was wrong: whereas the Tant I knew and loved was pretty strong, this paper was on the verge of tearing in points where more a few precreased lines intersected. By coincidence, at almost the same time, I learned from Ekaterina Lukasheva that Tant comes in several different weights, not only 80 gsm as I previously thought. Apparently, the sheet I bought was the 60 gsm version which explains why it was weaker than the standard. In the end, I managed to fold the model without tearing the paper, but several times it was a close call: this tessellation is rather hard to collapse. This is because of the ordering of the layers. I’m pretty sure there is no way to rigid-fold the molecule and it is possible in practice only due to the paper’s flexibility. Collapsing the tessellation is much harder than collapsing an individual star since the molecule’s surroundings limit the mobility of paper at its edges.

This is an alternate way of laying out molecules of Parallelograms tessellation. Because of how the pleats exiting the molecule are arranged, it is possible to chain together the pleats on the horizontal axes of two neighbors as in the basic version, or to chain one molecule’s horizontal axis to the other’s vertical axis as is the case here. The model shown here is folded from a single square of Biotope paper, and based on a 32×32 grid, but since I folded it using my clean folding techniques, grid lines are not visible in the finished work.

Went strolling around Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Came across this dome designed by Buckminster Fuller. If you have any faint recollection of Organic Chemistry classes - Buckminsterfullerene molecule is named after him - because of the molecule's resemblance to this structure.

It was Mad Molecule's birthday. I made him the card, and we ( Barbarian Heiress, 365Bunnies, pckl_jhn, Lost in Translation, El Destructo, and O Caveat Lector) decided that he needed an awesome gift.

Some water molecule's trying to escape before freezing.

Too late...

I found another derelict car chassis at the minifigure store the other day. This one was originally set 60383 Electric sports car. I really don't like electric cars in general. They are overcomplicated, use way too many touch screens and touch sensitive buttons, put electric motors in things that don't need them like air vents and door handles, which is just wasteful, generally don't get as much range they claim, take forever to recharge, are excessively heavy, completly unaffordable for most people and impractical if you don't have a garage to recharge it in. So I turned this car into something more desirable, a mid-engined kei car, based heavily off my 2018 Molecule MZ1 LDD model.

The Molecule's Revenge has been upgraded from your drab electric sedan into a lightweight entry level sports car. It has a mid mounted turbocharged VTech 4 cylinder producing 250 horsepower. Power is delivered to the road via a six speed sequential gearbox to the rear wheels. It sits on an all carbon fiber body and frame making it extremely light compared to the electric car it's based on. This light weight makes it very nimble. This also allows it to go from 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, and on to a top speed of 150 MPH. and gets 38 MPG.

I used part 40598a, which is basically a 2x2 tile that dosn't fit in any existing wheel including the newer larger SC wheels (72206pb01) for the rims on this car. I managed to squeeze them into the smaller tires (part 11209) with some go kart wheels (70967c01) behind like I've done before for previous MOCs, but this widens the tire radius just enough to scrape the wheel arches. So the wheels as seen here don't spin. I tried numerous other methods to try to incorperate this neat looking part and this is the best I could come up with. While it's inconvenient for play, it's great if you want to display the car on an inclined road or ramp.

These silver nanospheres can be used as an antenna to enhance the optical properties of single molecules, creating a research platform that allows scientists to fingerprint a molecule’s chemical identity. PNNL researchers study the properties of the nanospheres, including how they self-assemble with a uniform structure and how the resulting antenna effect provides a uniform signal. This level of nanometric uniformity is very difficult to achieve, but offers a new platform for researchers to take a closer look at the fundamental physical chemistry and physics of various molecules. This work was initiated with Laboratory Directed Research and Development funding and is now supported by the Condensed Phase and Interfacial Molecular Sciences Program within DOE’s Basic Energy Sciences program.

Fatty acids, or fatty acid residues when they are part of a lipid, are a diverse group of molecules synthesized by chain-elongation of an acetyl-CoA primer with malonyl-CoA or methylmalonyl-CoA groups in a process called fatty acid synthesis. They are made of a hydrocarbon chain that terminates with a carboxylic acid group; this arrangement confers the molecule with a polar, hydrophilic end, and a nonpolar, hydrophobic end that is insoluble in water. The fatty acid structure is one of the most fundamental categories of biological lipids, and is commonly used as a building-block of more structurally complex lipids. The carbon chain, typically between four and 24 carbons long, may be saturated or unsaturated, and may be attached to functional groups containing oxygen, halogens, nitrogen, and sulfur. If a fatty acid contains a double bond, there is the possibility of either a cis or trans geometric isomerism, which significantly affects the molecule's configuration.

This is about the interaction of light with water in its different phases: vapour, liquid, solid and in the special enviroment within an emerald crystal structure.

As we saw in a previous posting: Water, ice (and fire), vibrations within the water molecule produce emission and absorption bands throughout the red and infrared spectrum. We also noticed that the bands shift in wavelength depending on the surroundings on the water molecule, appearing at longer wavelengths in liquid water and ice when compared with the vapour.

A particularly interesting case of this is the gemstone, emerald (Be_3 Al_2 (SiO_3)_6), where water molecules can be trapped, along with alkali metal ions, in 'channels' within the crystal structure (D.L. Wood & K. Nassau, The American Mineralogist, Vol. 53, May-June, 1968, p777). The orientation of the water molecules with respect to the channel axis determines both the wavelengths and the polarisation properties of the absorption bands.

This plot shows a wide wavelength range, from 400 to 2500nm (obtained with two spectrometers). The y-axis shows the absorption strength (absorbance) - except in the case of the butane flame (red line) where it represents the emitted flux per unit wavelength. Most, but not all, of the peaks in this plot represent the effects of water: absorption in the case of the Earth's atmosphere (grey line), liquid water (dark blue line), ice (light blue line) and emerald (green line); but emission in the case of the flame.

Examination of the regions marked with 'notes' on the plot shows that the wavelengths of the bands increase in the sequence: vapour (atmosphere and flame)' emerald, liquid, ice - representing increasing effects of the environment on the vibrations of the water molecule.

The strength of the water bands in this emerald pebble (about 6mm across) represents the equivalent of about a tenth of a mm depth of liquid water - similar to the depth of water across a typical green leaf.

The notes (boxes) on the plot give the identification of the water molecule's vibrational bands within this wavelength range with the three numbers within the brackets representing the harmonic (overtone) of the symmetric stretch (n--), the bending mode (-n-) and the asymmetric stretch (--n) respectively.

The atmospheric absorption is taken from an observation of a total eclipse of the Moon (E. Pallé et al., "Earth's transmission spectrum from lunar eclipse observations", Nature, Volume 459, Issue 7248, pp. 814-816 (2009)) while the water and ice absorbance are taken from D. J. Segelstein, "The complex refractive index of water," University of Missouri-Kansas City, (1981) and S. G. Warren, "Optical constants of ice from the ultraviolet to the microwave," Appl. Opt., 23, 1026-1225, (1984) respectively.

The Family + Gail. April 2001 following mom's funeral

Here we are on the porch at Bill and Bev's after Mom's funeral. What a week. What a day. Frightened, heartbroken, loved, loving. Looking at this picture - it's strange that we are all smiling, even glowing. My love for my siblings is this inexplicable feeling of joy that we share when we are together. I guess it's that I can feel them. I know them by feeling their feelings with them. It's like, all together we make one complete person.

It took me so many years to digest this time period and to accept that Mom had gone forever. I had to come to terms with my Mother herself. She was herself, she was an icon, she was a part of me she was [as was my father] a larger than life person. My friend Diana said to me once, "My relationship with my Mother has gotten much better since she died."

I had a dream after she died. She came to the door and knocked. I opened it and was shocked to see her. I kept saying, "But I thought that you were dead." She never said anything, just walked around the house looking at things. She looked like she had looked at about 30. She was well dressed and beautiful. Then she looked at me and took me in her arms and hugged me. It felt like her. I could feel her body and I could also feel her feelings. I felt what it was to be her. Even in the dream, she smelled a certain way that was a signature. Then she turned around and walked out shutting the door. After that I stopped worrying about her so much. It's as though she was saying, "I'm okay." Our relationship continues.

The Present

I wanted to give you something —

no stone, clay, bracelet,

no edible leaf could pass through.

Even a molecule's fragrance by then too large.

Giving had been taken, as you soon would be.

Still, I offered the puffs of air shaped to meaning.

They remained air.

I offered memory on memory,

but what is memory that dies with the fallible inks?

I offered apology, sorrow, longing. I offered anger.

How fine is the mesh of death. You can almost see through it.

I stood on one side of the present, you stood on the other.

The National Science Foundation has awarded a $360,000 three-year grant for preservation research to the University of Southern Mississippi, Hybrid Plastics, and the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT). The research team is developing new stone strengtheners, also called consolidants, based on the latest advances in polymer science.

“This National Science Foundation grant creates opportunities for NCPTT to leverage its scientific expertise and resources by funding a partnership with university and private-sector researchers,” Kirk Cordell, NCPTT executive director said “This collaboration allows us to address fundamental challenges in stone conservation to advance the field of conservation and heritage science.”

When Mary Striegel, NCPTT’s chief of materials conservation, wanted to find new partners to develop innovative treatments for deteriorating historic stone monuments and structures, she turned to scientists in Hattiesburg, Miss. Joe Lichtenhan and his team at Hybrid Plastics were pioneering the use of a new group of polymers based on modifying POSS (Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane) molecules. Meanwhile, Derek Patton, an assistant professor at the University of Southern Mississippi, was studying interactions of polymers and surfaces and has an interest in new ways to synthesize polymers. Striegel thought that POSS molecules could be applied to preservation problems.

Decay leads to loss of stone strength. The outer surface of the stone can powder away, or can fall off in pieces. Consolidants are chemicals that are applied to and strengthen the surface of stone. Commercially-available consolidants are on the market, but ever increasing restrictions on environmental regulations make it harder to use these products in an outdoor environment. Additionally, some of the products work better on materials like sandstone than on limestone or marble.

Proposed new stone consolidants are based on the POSS molecule’s ability to form a cage-like structure that provides strength and stability under a variety of environmental conditions. The polymers have properties that are similar to both ceramics and plastics. Depending on the modifications made to the molecules, the polymers can be used as adhesives, water repellents, or consolidants. This National Science Foundation grant will help the team design new polymers that can be applied directly to stone and cured using ultraviolet light.

The joint research effort is being conducted in laboratories in Hattiesburg, Miss. and in Natchitoches, La. As an added benefit, this unique, cross-cutting academic/industry/government collaboration is providing undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to learn more about cultural heritage while strengthening their scientific skills.

The Vroomsporter is a modified Lego City Car Transporter, Set 60305. I bought the set used at the Minifigure store. The original truck and trailer looked too small, and wimpy, so I upgraded it. This Auto Hauler is now longer, more detailed and can hold bigger Speed Champions style cars.

The Truck it self got two extra wheels with fenders givinig it a more realistic look. I also changed the front grill, added exhaust stacks, proper tail lights, fuel tanks, and that horseshoe shaped thing around the hitch that's on all tractor trailers.

The Trailer was lengthened by 4 studs, allowing it to hold 3 standerd 6 wide speed champions style cars. It was also given an extra set of wheels, turn signals and two additional tail lights. My biggest gripe with the original set was the single set of fenderless wheels on the trailer which looked very unrealistic. I wanted to put fenders over the new wheels, but they just didn't work with the flat bed design, not allowing cars to roll on and off easily, so I left it with out. The Trailer's tilted ramp feature is still functional, even though I moved the second set of arms back a bit. I wanted to add more structure like you see on real Auto Haulers, but I found that I couldn't with out compermising the working ramp feature.

The set came with a single orange and black convertable car that was pretty much perfect as is. I only added four 1x1 orange plates behind the front and rear bumpers to close the gap between them and the fenders. Seen here with my Molecule's Revenge cyberpunk car MOC, and my Splinter 453 S car MOC.

There will be Molecule's attending the EXPO during Friday, Saturday and Sunday - with our main meetup held on Saturday (detailed in this poster).

BY ROBERTO HARRISON

i fail in the retry of possible gaps

                 for the middle of canyons

                 in crumbling lights

                 for the scarification of vinyl.

                 it rides through the forest

                 and throbs a small packet

                 where parallel seams

                 scratch a readable surface

on the backs of the camels

                 in mirages of separate planes

                 to the bursting eclipse

                 of pronounceable service,

two spots on its forehead call out

for the country of doubling masses

on a highway that cuts into faces

                 in line for the city

                 every stream ties a knot

for an opening under the sea

i lose all my digits

to the moon that will one day be bare

to the parched piles of breathing in farms

to the doorways that promise a morning

on the accident prone to a murder of chance

every mouse in the dust in the kitchen

                 will harvest the cold

in the sickness of scattering twigs

                 in the answer of mirrors

for the double that sings with the night

by the prayer full of ashes

                 under frozen cadavers that once

                 were the hearts

in the egg of a wound

i disappear in the wrap-up

for invisible letters that leave all the snow

for the hunt to deliver migration

on the mushroom fields full of returns

under beaches in roads by a promise

where the water turns into a home

and the blame of the air will no longer wail

for the spot in the cloud full of planets

while a bubble reenters a womb

                 for explosions in placards

like the front of a bus

                 crossing vines in a prairie

that were traced on the skin of a goat

i look at the picture of too many races

for the blood of a horse

                 that a bundle of sleeping

                 3 shorted connections

for the change of electrical chairs

                 under pools of announcements

                 for the battling showers

that tell all the stories of war

to infants in sight of the corner of trading

for the telephones buried in answers

under barrooms and sawdust and piers

where the songs of an isthmus

                 circle the beacon

                 where the moon cannot pull

                 where a whisper

                 moves sand off a stone

i weigh every mote in my eye with the fingers of handshakes

they calibrate walks like the wheels of a car

                 they reflect in a wave

like untying the knot of a bruise full of ice

                 where once was a number

                 where the count was eleven

                 where equality lifts

                 like the dough

that incarcerates mud clots and showers

                 for the vanishing thorn

in a guide by the pillow

                 softly omitted

                 what the second hand sees

under gears by the hand of a cripple

for the ditch in a face that is fine

i bury my head in the leaves

that the buses were lost in

that day when i looked for her here in the Arctic

when the telephone poles were the marks of equators

                 when the mornings at home

could not write their own name

when the shepherd was singing too many shields

at the entrance of staring at stars in the basement

with the light in the chest of what follows

with a walking that pulls at two seals

                 for the trouble in words

                 in the empty

in the on and off one

why there have to be zeros

                 to raise all the shores

for piñatas to line themselves up in the snow

                 under spreading the phase

                 of recalling the crosshairs

                 on the hive

that the singing will never return

                 when the breaking gives others

                 a prompt to give air

i radio frequencies meant to undress all the parrots

in the knot that a hill on the head

                 of the viewer can see

without even a monkey to grow

                 with a molecule’s power

in a black hole instead of a screen

                 in identity swimming to surface

every outlook reframes on a break

                 in circular lots

by the parking spot full of directions

where a jacket sinks into the roll

                 of an orange in Fez

                 around trains in the mountains

                 that the pantomime echoes

in the valley of shells that call out

                 for an engine to answer

when penalties cease in the skull

of another score gone on the pavement

with the sound of a bell that is broken

to bear its first weight in the sand

Photo: View and reflection of "The Gift," a mosaic of portraits by Jochen Gerz, now at SFMOMA

"New disease research system

A new approach to use of immunocytochemistry in medical research, being developed in the Faculty of Medicine, is expected to lead to a better understanding of the causes of some diseases.

Installation of a cryo-ultramicrotomy system worth $161,000 in the laboratory of Dr John Heath, in the Medical Sciences Building, has alleviated a major problem which faces researchers who use immunocytochemistry.

The cryo-ultramicrotomy system was paid for by an anonymous donor. The Research Committee of the Faculty of Medicine selected Dr Heath as the recipient of the donation after the committee had considered a number of applications for grants for the research equipment.

The cryo-ultramicrotomy system is the only system of its kind in the Hunter Valley and one of few in Australia.

The cryo-ultramicrotomy technique enables researchers to overcome a major technical limitation on the effectives of immunocytochemistry when combined with an electron microscope.

Dr Heath, a member of the University’s Neuroscience Group, explains that immunocytochemistry permits a specific molecule to be located and visualised at the cellular, or sub cellular, level of microscopy.

In essence, the technique requires an antibody to develop against an antigenic site on the molecule.

Dr Heath says a “visual label” – a coloured or fluorescent dye or a micro-gold particle – is attached to the antibody, thus blinding the antibody to the antigen and revealing the molecule’s lactation.

“Not surprisingly” immunocytochemistry has enabled major advances to be made in our understanding of disease processes and the function and development of cells and tissues,” he says.

He mentions as example multiple sclerosis, other demyelinising diseases of the nervous system, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, which affect nerve cells of the brain, muscle disorders, such as muscular dystrophy, disorders affecting the lungs and kidneys and the study of cells and tissues affected by cancer.

Dr Health explains that the use of electron microscopy in immunocytochemistry is highly desirable, because, through the high magnification and resolution achieved by the technique, the location of the molecule can be pin-pointed accurately at the sub-cellular level.

“Thus, it can be determined whether the molecule is present in one, or both, of two closely adjacent cells, or two closely opposed, buy functionally distinct, membrane systems.

“The synthesis and processing of the molecule within the cell can be followed and the nature and location organelles involved in storage and secretion can be determined.

“By using markers of different sizes, the interrelationship of different specific molecules can be follower in developing and mature cells and the response of these cells to disease can be monitored directly.”

Dr Heath points out that the technical limitation on immunoytochemistry at the electron microscopy level stems from the need to expose the tissue to more reactive aldehydes, especially glutaraldehy, in order to preserve it.

As a result, he says, the natural antigenicity of the tissue is reduced, and often completely lost. Thus, antigen-antibody blinding is reduced, resulting is misleading reduction, or absence of localisation, in the tissue.

For this reason, the interpretations of many previous studies have remained controversial, or, at least incomplete.

By contrast, Dr Heath says, cryo-ultramicrotomy preserves the tissue structure by snap-freezing it in liquid nitrogen.

The antigenicity of the tissue is protected and the sensitivity of the crucial antigen-antibody reaction is increased, thereby, strengthening the quality and interrelationship of experimental results.

The immunocytochemical procedure is undertaken directly onto the thin sections of tissue (70 nanometres thick – one millimetre equals one million nanometres) that are generated by the cryo-ultramicrotome, which operates at a temperature of approximately minus 100 degrees C.

“The sections of tissue are examined directly by transmissions electron microscopy, using minute particles of gold – as little as one nanometre in diameter – as the visual marker of the site antigen-antibody reaction.”

He says the equipment package includes a cryo-preparation unit, which ensures that the rate of freezing of the tissue is optimal. This is important, so that the formation of ice crystals can minimised thus improving the quality of the thin sections of tissue, as well as the ultrastructural integrity of the tissue.

Dr Heath, referring to the work in progress which uses the cryo-ultramicrotoy system, says included are experimental studies of the interactions of Schwann cells and macrophages during Wallerian degeneration of myelinated peripheral nerve, the post-translational processing of the placental hormone Corticotrophin Releasing Hormone and molecules involved in neuronal maturation.

Drs Gerald Little, Minjie Lin, Kate Jones, Lynne Hartley and Assoc Professors Roger Smith and John Rostos are also involved in the work"

Dartmouth engineering professor Karl Griswold and team published a study that shows promise for an engineered lysin-based antibacterial agent that may enable safe, repeated dosing to treat life-threatening infections.

A molecular model of the F12 biotherapy shows the fold of its polypeptide backbone. Residual T-cell epitopes are mapped onto the structure and colored from white (no epitopes) to dark red (dense overlapping epitopes). The muted red coloring indicates that T-cell epitopes have been broadly silenced in the engineered F12 variant, and this reduced epitope content underlies the molecule’s improved safety and efficacy profile.

A nanotube is a long, cylindrical carbon structure consisting of hexagonal graphite molecule s attached at the edges.

Today it was all about nanotechnology so we had the kids contruct a massive nanotube out of balloons to illustrate what a nanotube looks like when magnified. Nanotechnology is amazing. One example of this is stain resistant clothing, but there are so many new discoveries; researchers are just beginning to fully scratch the surface of what these things can really do.

Angel of the West (2008) was inspired by the structure of the human immune system’s key molecule, the antibody. Like tiny guardian angels, legions of antibodies constantly protect us from ill and disease. Their ability to bind to specific molecules makes them a valuable tool in biomedical research, crucial for understanding the machinery of life and allowing Western medicine to develop vaccinations and novel pharmaceuticals. The sculpture plays on the striking similarity of both proportion and function of the antibody molecule and the human body. A representation of the antibody molecule, in a style I developed, is surrounded by a ring evocative of Leonardo’s Renaissance icon Vitruvian Man (1490). Where man’s arms reach up to touch the circle with his hands, the molecule’s flexible ‘arms’ ending in highly specific hand-like regions hold on to the ring. The antibody’s ‘hands’ function to hold on to an intruder, for example a virus, thus tagging it for destruction through the immune system. Reminiscent of spiritual imagery, a set of rays emanates from the spot where the center of the human head would be located in Leonardo’s drawing.
