Modi'in is an Israeli city located in central Israel, about 30 kilometres west of Jerusalem. The population about 100 thousend.

There isn't much information out there about the old Modi Theatre. It opened in 1925, but has been closed for decades and has been converted into retail space.

Edited Terra MODIS image of phytoplankton in the North Sea and English Channel. Color/processing variant.

Original caption: Stunning jewel-tones continued to paint whimsical colors in the waters of the North Sea, the English Channel, and the Celtic Sea in late June 2020. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the expansive, colorful blooms on June 24.

Phytoplankton are microscopic, plant-like organisms that live in these waters year-round in relatively small numbers. When conditions are right—correct water temperature, long daylight hours, and adequate nutrient load—they can reproduce explosively, creating these magnificent blooms that contain billions of organisms. While blooms may last for several months, individual organisms tend to live very short times. The size and color of a bloom depends on many factors, including the type of species that are present as well as ebb and flow of reproduction and death within the bloom.

These tiny, plant-like organisms turn sunlight and carbon dioxide into sugars and oxygen. In turn, they become food for the grazing zooplankton, shellfish, and finfish of the sea. Blooms fade as nutrient availability drops or they are consumed by booming numbers of zooplankton.

This is just an updated image where I have overlaid METAR observations in black instead of the previous colour plots.

For the Air Mass product, red/orange indicates areas of potential vorticity (subsidence) as dry air from the stratosphere is pulled downward. Green areas indicate warm, moisture at high-levels while olive coloured areas show warm, moisture at mid-levels.

CSK radar (black-and-white) and MODIS / Terra (color) satellite images taken on July 25, 2010, show the effects of tropical depression Bonnie's passage on the oil slicks and sheen from the BP / Deepwater Horizon spill. No new oil is seen in the immediate vicinity of the well, which has been tightly capped since July 15. But remnants of the oil slick are visible around the Mississippi Delta.

The MODIS image also shows dozens of small oil slicks from natural oil and gas seeps. These seeps appear unusually active, possibly due to seafloor disturbance caused by Bonnie. A bright area of slicks or sheen between the spill-related oil slicks (orange line) and the area of active seeps (dashed red line) could be where oil from both sources is mingling.

Though the days may be different, gathering with family and friends for major holidays is the same the world over. China’s biggest holiday, the Lunar New Year, prompts a mass migration (the largest on the planet, said BBC News) as tens of millions travel home. In 2008, however, travel proved nearly impossible. Snow storms closed roads and railroads across eastern, central, and southern China, reported BBC News. This image, captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the morning of January 29, 2008, shows how extensive the unusual snow cover is. The image encompasses most of eastern China, save the northernmost provinces and the cloud-covered southern coast. From north to south, nearly the entire country is covered in snow.
