The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) connects London with Canary Wharf in the east and beyond. In my working days I rode on it most days and often used this station. But in those days I wasn't interested in photography and to be honest I don't think I ever even noticed what a terrific piece of modern architectural design this station was, and still is. I've since learned to always look up!

The Beijing National Stadium (北京国家体育场, guójiā tǐyùchǎng), also known as the Bird's Nest (鸟巢, Niǎocháo) was designed for and used during the 2008 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
The design was awarded to the Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, structural engineering by ARUP. The design implemented interlaced steel beams in order to hide the supports for the planned retractable roof, thus giving the stadium the appearance of a bird's nest.
The retractable roof was later removed from the design after leading to the stadium's most recognizable design aspect. Apart from cost savings, the removal of the retractable roof made the overall design lighter and also helped to design it to withstand seismic activities.
The "Bird's Nest" design features to an apparently random placing of the beams, while in-fact each of the stadium's halves features an identical layout of the structural members.
The stadium is 333 metres long, 296 metres wide and has a maximum height of 69 metres. Regular seating capacity is 80,000, on peak events such as the Olympics this number can be increased to 91,000.
It does not belong to the list of "one time used and then abandoned" Olympic facilities, though it did initially face difficulties attracting new events. Most post-olympics profit comes from the 50 Yuan admission fee for visitors - at an annual average 25,000 visitors per day do visit the stadium.

Situated in Parque das Nações, Lisbon, this impressive station was on for design bidding to be used for the 1998 Expo which was solicited internationally. The concept was originally designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava in 1995 and built by Necso.
Although within a stone's throw from my hotel, I was not spared the early morning rise to shoot this marvel. Police patrol and security guards could not understand my obsession but the shot was eventually successfully taken, free of traffic and passers by.

Reunification Hall is a stylish modern architecture designed by Ngô Viết Thụ, a Vietnamese architect who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1955.
I saw many dressed up people posing for photos in this historical building.
Photographed quite often, the imposing canopy of Canary Wharf tube station is a superb piece of modern architecture.
Designed by Foster and Partner Architects it was completed in 1999. Above ground the station roof is laid out as a landscaped park, creating Canary Wharf's principal recreation space. The only visible station elements are these arcing glass canopies that cover its three entrances and draw daylight deep into the concourse.
I've given this shot a desaturated look and given it a cooler white balance as I didn't really like how the colours of the original shot came out. A lot of people like to keep this shot free of people as well but I thought I'd include some human element to give scale to the vast canopy itself.
In popular culture Canary Wharf station has been used by Danny Boyle for his film 28 Days Later and more recently, the Star Wars film Rogue One.
I'm pretty sure I could win a ‘guess what this is?’ competition with you on this one .
It’s an in-camera multiple-exposure of three ICMs, taken with movements along the vertical and both diagonals. It was virtually monochrome in the camera, but as it’s Monochrome Thursday today I've processed it in Silver Efex and given it a rich selenium tone.
But what is it of?
It’s of the top of some trees against a cloudy sky. The trees are all black twigs in winter so that’s what has given it the monochrome look with lots of scratchy lines. I used the Light blend mode in the camera and because the ICM pushes the images to a mid-grey the blending is random and unpredictable.
I rather like these abstract effects and I was a bit surprised when these monochrome fabrics started appearing on the camera screen. I'll put this one as the first in my monochrome 100x sub-project.
Thanks for taking the time to look… and even have a guess. I hope you enjoy the image. Happy Donnerstagsmoncrom and 100x :)>

The Oculus Center, also known as the Oculus or World Trade Center Transportation Hub, is an impressive structure in New York City that opened in March 2016. It was designed by renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.
The idea behind the Oculus was to create not only a transportation hub for the subways and the PATH train, but also a symbol of hope and rebirth on the site of the former World Trade Center, which was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Construction of the Oculus was extremely challenging and complex. The distinctive white opening structure, which looks like a bird or a flower, is made of steel and glass and covers an area of about 9,290 square meters. It was an engineering feat to realize the structure. The budget for the construction was about 4 billion US dollars.
The Oculus functions not only as a transportation hub, but also as a shopping center and public space. It is an impressive example of modern architectural design and a symbol of resilience and hope amidst the challenges the city and the world have faced following the tragic events of September 11.
The Ópera de Arame (The Wire Opera House), one of Curitiba’s most recognizable buildings and an excellent example of modern architecture. Designed by architect Domingos Bongestabs, it was completed in March 1992, after only 75 days of construction and is built entirely of glass and steel pipes in a lush green space surrounded by a lake. Located in a deactivated quarry just north of Curitiba’s city center, the theater, was built to work with the surrounding nature. It can seat up to 2,400 spectators and hosts performances ranging from classical to popular.
WAVES, SURF and youngsters. These are the main features of the Zurriola Beach, San Sebastián’s liveliest and vibiest stretch of sand. Located in the district of Gros, between the Kursaal and Monte Ulía, ever since it was remodelled 15 years ago the Zurriola Beach has become a favourite with surfers and youngsters who come from all over the world in search of fun and new acquaintances.
The main reason for visiting the “Zurri”, as the local youths like to call it, is to move your body. This lively aspect is precisely its greatest attraction. Surf championships and daily surf classes, volleyball, football and beach-tennis... The hub of beach activity is to be found here, on the 800 metres of sand occupied by the Zurriola.
Crowning the easternmost end of the promenade is the Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium, a symbol of new modern architecture designed by Rafael Moneo. The building forms the backbone of local cultural and congress activity and is the hub of San Sebastián's major festivals.
The promenade running round the beach from Sagüés to the Kursaal ‘cubes’ continues on its way round Monte Urgull and along the Paseo Nuevo to end at the Peine del Viento sculpture on the Concha Bay. This spectacular city walk covers around 6 kilometres and offers spectacular sea views and delightful resting spots along the way.
From the Zurriola, you can also make your way up to Monte Ulía, a green area only a moment's walk from the city centre. A former look-out point for whales, Monte Ulía is the city's best hillwalking option and follows part of the coastal route on the Way of Saint James.

The building was completed in 1966 as the Independence Palace for the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) by abolishing Saigon Governor's Palace constructed in 1869. It is a modern architecture designed by Ngô Viết Thụ, a Vietnamese architect.
It was used by Nguyễn Văn Thiệu for his home and office until 1975. He was the leader of the military coup in 1965 and elected later as president.
It was renamed to Reunification Hall in 1975 when Vietnam was reunified. It is now open to the public as a historical monument.

I was drawn to the repetitive patterns and the smooth curvature of this modern architectural design. The black-and-white treatment highlights the interplay of light and shadow, transforming this structure into abstract dunes that seem both artificial and natural.
Looking down from above, the curves of the Blavatnik School’s staircase create a sense of continuous motion and elegance.

The Water Cube in Beijing is officially named Beijing National Aquatics Center (北京国家游泳中心). its colloquial name Water Cube (水立方) stuck, the Water Park now occupying half of the complex is officially named Water Cube Water Park (水立方嬉水乐园).
It was built opposite the Beijing National Stadium for the swimming competitions of the 2008 Summer Olympics. After the Olympic Games half of the complex was re-built as a water park that officially opened in August 2010.
The Water Cube was designed and built by an international consortium made up of PTW Architects (Sydney), ARUP international engineering group, CSCEC (China State Construction Engineering Corporation), and CCDI (China Construction Design International) of Shanghai.
Despite its name it is not an actual cube, but a cuboid (178 metres square, 31 metres tall). During the design phase the Chinese partners felt a square was more symbolic to Chinese culture and its relationship to the Bird's Nest stadium, while PTW came up with the idea of covering the building with bubbles, symbolising water.
Contextually the cube with its square footprint symbolises earth while a circle (represented by the nearly circular stadium) represents heaven.
The main structure is a steel space frame, the outer cladding (bubbles) is made from ETFE (Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene), a plastic material. ETFE's special properties are a high corrosion resistance and strength over a wide temperature range. The structure of the cladding is based on the structure formed in the natural pattern of bubbles in a soap lather.
