Celia Beron is a Dean’s Honored Graduate in Biology. She is graduating with an Honors Degree in Biology under the Dean’s Scholars program. She is being recognized for her extensive research conducted under the supervision of Dr. Jon Pierce-Shimomura in the area of neuroscience.
She began her research in the Pierce-Shimormura lab in the Spring of 2013, and has worked on two distinct projects utilizing the C. elegans nematode as a model system. Most recently she has been working on a project to discern the neural and molecular mechanism for how animals sense the Earth’s magnetic field. To this end, Celia has become familiar with behavioral testing, the physics of electromagnetism, animal husbandry, as well as genetics and molecular techniques. In this, she has discovered that nematodes use the Earth’s magnetic field to migrate vertically in the soil. This amazing finding has secured her place as a contributing author in a manuscript recently accepted to the journal eLife along with a second publication in peparation. She is also the lead researcher on a project examining muscle function. She conducted a forward genetic screen to identify new genetic targets that could restore function to the muscles of people afflicted by muscular dystrophy. To date, Celia has isolated several genes that, then mutated, restore some of the motor ability to animals modeling muscular dystrophy. She is co-first author on this work, which was accepted by the journal Genes, Brain and Behavior. Finally, she has been working on further projects to understand the genetic components underlying the variation in this behavior in C. elegans isolated from around the world as part of her Honors Thesis.
Her work has been recognized with numerous awards including a Trainee Professional development Award from the Society for Neuroscience, Barry Goldwater Fellowship Honorable Mention, and the Luminex Award for Excellence in Biology Research. She also received the best poster award at the UT Neuroscience Symposium, beating out competition composed almost exclusively of graduate students and postdocs.
Celia has been a part of the Longhorn Entrepreneurship Agency for the past three years to help enhance the culture for entrepreneurship on campus. She is a member of Kappa Delta sorority. This summer she will work at Janelia Research Campus, and in the fall she will start work on her Ph.D. with a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellowship in the neuroscience program at Harvard.
