Laida Phiri proudly displays her land certificate in Mphondolo, Zambia. This piece of paper contains Ms. Phiri’s name, a map of her parcel of land, and the names of her relatives. The land certificate will provide Ms. Phiri with increased security against disputes over boundaries or wrongful displacement. The certificate is the result of a community-wide participatory mapping and land certification program supported by USAID.

Standing in her newly demarcated field, Josephine Phiri (center) holds a receipt that validates her claim to her most important asset: this piece of land. Ms. Phiri has just guided Alice Mvula (right) and Samuel Phiri (left) on a “boundary walk” along the borders of her land. Ms. Mvula recorded the boundaries and information about the parcel with a hand-held GPS as part of a USAID-supported customary land certification program in Zambia’s Eastern Province. Soon, Ms. Phiri will be issued a customary land certificate, documenting her rights to this parcel of land.
