Le Belle de nuit forme un buisson recouvert de fleurs qui s'ouvrent en fin de journée et diffusent un parfum pendant les belles soirées d'été. C'est une plante qui peut se montrer envahissante en raison de sa vitesse de pousse et de ses graines qui se ressèment très facilement. La Belle de nuit craint le gel; c'est une annuelle dans nos climats, peut atteindre 80 cm de haut et produit pendant plusieurs semaines une abondance de fleurs jaune ou rouge. L'espèce est nommée "Gulanbasa dans la médecine de l'Ayurvéda et Gul e Abbas dans la médecine Unani ) Les feuilles en sont utilisées comme anti inflammatoires, anti viraux, anti bactériens, anti fongiques, anti spasmodiques ... Dans l'Himalaya et au Pakistan, elles sont également utilisées pour soigner les jaunisses et les hépatites.

La Piscina Mirabilis, monumento archeologico sito nel comune di Bacoli, costituisce una delle opere architettoniche più sorprendenti dell’età romana. Si tratta della più grande cisterna di acqua potabile mai costruita, con funzione di approvvigionamento per la flotta romana, la Classis Misenensis divenuta Classis Praetoria Misenensis Pia Vindex della Marina Militare, di stanza al porto di Miseno, sul lato nord-ovest del Golfo di Napoli. Interamente scavata nel tufo, è larga 72x25 m e profonda 15, con una capacità di 12.000 mc. È ricoperta da una volta a botte sostenuta da 48 enormi pilastri cruciformi, disposti su quattro file, a formare cinque navate.Nella navata centrale, è collocata una piscina limaria di 20x5 metri, profonda 1,10 metri, una vasca funzionale allo svuotamento e alla pulizia periodica della cisterna. La cisterna (il nome attuale le fu attribuito nel tardo Seicento) costituiva il serbatoio terminale dell’acquedotto augusteo o “Aqua Augusta” che, dalle sorgenti avellinesi di Serino, attraverso un tragitto lungo quasi 100 km, portava l’acqua a Napoli, nei Campi Flegrei ed in molte altre località dell’agro campano.

Originaire d'Amérique du sud (Pérou) . Elle fut introduite en Europe à la fin du 16 ème siècle. Elle tient son nom de sa principale caractéristique: ses fleurs s'ouvrent pleinement la nuit et se ferment au petit matin. Elle atteint 30 à 80 cm, largement moins si vous la cultiver en pot; et forme rapidement un petit buisson grâce à son port très ramifié.

Mirabilis in Latin means wonderful and Jalapa (or Xalapa) is the state capital of Veracruz in Mexico. Mirabilis jalapa is believed to have been cultivated by the Aztecs for medicinal and ornamental purposes.

Die Pflanze kann viele hundert Jahre alt werden. Die Pflanze besitzt nur 2 Blätter. Die beiden Laubblätter können über 2,5 Meter lang werden, manche Berichte sprechen von 6,2 Metern. Am Blattende sterben sie ab und verwittern, die ältesten lebenden Teile können jedoch 10 Jahre alt werden. Mit der Zeit reißen die Blätter häufig auf und täuschen so mehrere Blätter vor.
