Great Lake Swimmers - "Think That You Might Be Wrong"

Victor, Colorado Trails of Gold

An evergreen tree is growing atop this powder magazine. My first photos of this were taken 11 years ago and the tree has been growing, albeit slowly, but this is a harsh environment at 10,000'. See my comment below to share this tree's progress.

The Forest Queen Ore Sorting House was moved here from its original site almost a mile away. Shown here at the top of Poverty Gulch on the Gold Camp Trail.

This shot is taken back in the gold mining town of Ravenswood inland from Townsville. Once the original reefs were worked out in 1917, miners just picked up and left the field and everything else behind so the area was rich in artefacts and implements, buildings and equipment from the original mining days. Because this area of Queensland is in a bit of a rain shadow the metal work has lasted quite well.

As well as the wealth of gear in this shot, you will notice in the distance the vast tailings and overburden stockpile that has been thrown up in a long wall along one side of town from the reopened open cut gold mine. This was not here when we were last in town and it has drawn something of an ugly curtain around the area. Explosives are used quite close to town also, some streets have disappeared under the new mine.

At the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Baker City

A fun fall day at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center, in Baker City Oregon exploring the Oregon Trail, pioneer and gold rush history. The Center currently open with new Covid 19 precautions in place including social distancing and mask requirements, and redesigned interpretive experiences.

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center sits high atop Flagstaff Hill outside Baker City Oregon, overlooking the ruts of the Oregon Trail still visible today in the Baker valley below. Located along the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway, an outdoor wagon encampment is the first sights visitors see when they arrive at the National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center. Other outdoor exhibits include a gold panning exhibit, a recreated Lode Mine, a historic stamp mill, and an operating blacksmith shop.

Costumed narrators from the BLM staff and Trail Tenders volunteer group provide interpretation and narration for the exhibits and activities throughout the center. In 1845 two shepherds discovered copper in separate locations at Burra in South Australia and by1850 Burra was the largest metal ore mine in Australia, producing five percent of the world’s copper up until 1860. More than 1,000 men were employed during this period. Pumping and winding engines were imported from Cornwall and most of the workmen were Cornish. This windinghouse was located adjacent to a corresponding enginehouse on the southern end of the mine site. The rusted boiler in the foreground was once part of the mine’s boiler house.

Goldfield was a boomtown back in the 1890's when gold was discovered in the Superstition Mountains. Goldfield Ghost Town is situated on the historic Apache trail down the road from the Lost Dutchman State Park. Print Size 8x10 inches.

Another view of the Ravenswood diggings. Chimney-stacks and mullock heaps dot the hillsides while a five-head stamper battery, used for crushing the ore, stands in the front-left corner.

Doc can't resist climbing around on old equipment. Maybe he was a miner in a former life - but at his current age - I wish he would quit challenging his abilities.

The Mucking Machine circa 1940's was used to load Grandby type cars with either ore or waste rock to be hauled to either an ore pass or a waste rock pass. These Mucking Machines were replaced by the 70's with scooptrams in most underground operating mines.

This picture shows some of the abandoned mining equipment strewn about town and a few of the remaining structures in Bodie, California. Bodie, located north of Mono Lake. was a gold-mining town that once had a population of ~10,000. The small fraction of the ghost town that survives, is now a California State Historic Park preserved in a state of "arrested decay". Reportedly, it is essentially the way it was left when the gold boom went bust. Today, except for the occasional ghosts and several park rangers who live on site the town is deserted.

Granby Ore or Mine Cars are a robust proven design. The cars are among-st the most robust resulting in long service life. The cars tip to the side with a dolly wheel engaging a ramp. There not suitable for sticky ore as it can build up in the ore box. Granby cars can be supplied in sizes anywhere between 2m3 and 8m3. The traditional type Granby mine cars are widely used in underground mining operations where extraction requires high volumes at low cost. They have a side wheel which helps in side dumping.

The sun rising on the quarry equipment starts the day this April morning.
